The Money Tree- Pachira

I dont know were to ask about this money tree, i cant seem to find any index on it. My problem is this, I bought this tree in an Home Depot. It is in a clay pot and it is being held up by glued rocks, i dont know if it has any dirt in it i cant seem to break through to see. the steems seem to be rotting, and i dont know how much to water it and when to water, i know (was told) not to water it untill the soil is compleatly dry. so i water it once a week. Any sugestions!?

Hey there,

I bought the exact same plant from Home Depot. I broke the rocks and repotted the Pachira in the pot, here's how I did it:

Outside, I sat down and held the pot in between my legs. In one hand get a flat-headed screw driver (not a philips head) and in the other a hammer. Use the screw driver as a chisel and gently tap it with the hammer. You'll find that the top layer of the rocks is only glued -- rocks underneath are loose.

Once you break through those rocks you can pick them out or dump them out. Then, I took out the soil (about an inch or so at the bottom) and found my roots were sitting in water basically. SO i added a layer of rocks to the bottom of the pot for drainage (since there is no hole in the bottom of the pot), then threw in some soil and covered the top layer with a thin layer of inorganic bonsai soil just for looks. The soil was just preference; i think all you need is to have the roots covered in soil, however.

Hi, are you still looking for info about your Money Tree?

We almost bought one yesterday at a nursery, but didn't because all the bulbous roots were squishy, even the ones in regular pots, not fake bonsais with rocks. Now I'm wondering if that is normal for this plant. It grows in swamps.

Came home and looked it up. Here is info on Money tree. It get's BIG in the wild and produces edible nuts:

Wow, I think I have the world's friendliest pachira lol. Mine likes to stay lush, and comfort me when I have done something stupid which has angered my other plants, lol. I've had it for years and it tends to be on the more cooperative end of everything I'm growing. It's true what everyone is saying about less water than a typical tropical though. I don't water mine until the soil is dry all the way down to the knuckle of my pointer finger when I stick it in, and then i flush the soil completely. I also think maybe a little less than full sun too, Mine tends to bake and wilt if the light is too strong, and does fine in the winter under some growlights inside. I've never fertilized it, or done anything in particular to encourage it, but I I do give it lots of love and chat with it while I'm making my rounds about my plants. Hello everyone ! Please help me about my pachira plant. I have a 6.5 foot tall plant that grew beautifully. noticed many Honeydews on the top and I took it as a sign of over watering so I cut the water. Things got worst, Honey dews rapidly progressed and covered the whole length of the tree and the leaves started to get yellow. I noticed some tiny brown dots under the leaves that could be scratched off. I sprayed my plant thoroughly with insecticide after. The dews are gone but now the leaves are showing patches of brown ( Embedded withing the structure of the leave like decolourations ) can you please let me know what to do ? Needless to say that I noticed some webbing and found that they are caused by spider mites. So what do I do now ? How often should I keep spraying it ? thanks !

Hi Cassidi, Your money tree is quite impressive, especially with you living in a dry climate like Colorado. Drooping leaves can sometimes be attributed to a root bound plant, meaning that the roots are choking each other and making it hard for the plant to get the air and water it needs. When was the last time you repotted your money tree? Misting will help with the browning on the tips. The average home is dryer than the sahara desert, mostly because of AC and frequent cool air movement. In the garden shop I work at we had a money tree doing the same browning and dropping of leaves as you described. Misting helped quite a bit. The black spots could be a bacterial problem. Did they show up after the plant started looking sad or before? If after, then they came because the plant was in a weakened state. If before, then the bacteria might be the source of the problems. Do the black spots turn into the little holes in your plant? If its bacteria then the only way you can control it is to pull all the leaves infected and throw them away. Also the cleaning mentioned above might help. I recommend letting the soil dry out between waterings. This allows the roots to breathe and would be a good recovery tactic if your plant is root bound. Also be sure to fertilize your plant with a slow release (preferably organic) fertilizer. This will allow the plant to take the nutrition it needs and not burn the plant like some liquid fertilizers can. Well, I hope I helped. Good luck on your Pachira's recovery. Sincerely, Roselyn Small

how about a pic of the tree... the pot/planter .... etc ... you should always plant into damp media ... you should not plant into dry material ... and then hope you can properly water all of it from the top ... trees like a sip of water.. and then near total draining ... most of the water runs right thru ... which you wont know.. because your pot retains the water ... i would like a pic of the gizmo that holds the water.. can it be left out of the pot ... ??? i cant think of any tree.. that needs to be fed every 2 weeks ... is this a houseplant [now that i googled it]??? ... if so.. i wonder if you might find some peeps with direct experience.. in that forum ... it would be a different equation.. if its outdoors in a large pot .. the trick here.. is that as your proper media.. washes water out the bottom.. you need to put it back in the pot ... and that is a tough equation .... i guess i would start with an equivalent pot size.. and practice with it after ... presuming the plant has not been touched yet .... what difference would it make.. if you waited a month while practicing with your media ... the biggest problem with trees in pots .... is too much water ... as the roots tend to start rotting .... you say the roots are weak.. but you dont say.. the plant has been affected ... is it.. hence the pic request ... look at this link for the section on water and fert ... unless i read it wrong .. let it dry to an inch depth .. and fert it once or twice per year... if growing it as a bonsia... which i presume he means as a houseplant ... https://www.epicgardening.com/money-tree-plant/ you have to make sure ... with trees in pots ... that you dont love them to death .... and it starts with watering .. or better put.. drying ... ken ps: note what the link says about media ... and it also says... if you repot.. dont be surprised with some leaf losses due to the process ...

Is the Money Tree the same as a Money Plant, which produces round green flat pods, but when dried you rub the green pods off and underneath a beautiful iridescent pod appears,usually used in dry arrangements with asian flair

Hi, Firewater, since the OP didn't come back, I will answer your question. No, it is not the same plant. The money tree can be an actual large tree. I also have money plant and have several arrangements with it in it. It is a biennial that never gets much bigger than 3-4 ft and is not woody.

i just bought a braided pachira insignius from ikea a couple days ago. i repotted it into a glass pot with no drainage whole but with glass pebbles below the soil and small rocks on top to make sure the tree didn't fall over (the roots are very short). it is sitting about 6' away from my S facing window. today i noticed that the leaves are starting to show a silvery film almost like small spider webs and i'm not sure why. i believe from reading other posts that i may have over-watered it to start out with, but have since drained the excess water to let it dry. the soil however is still somewhat moist. should i repot it in drier soil? should i mist the leaves?
