Mourning Dove

This is a fairly recent introduction (2005) from Hans Hansen - 'Mikawa-no-yuki streaked' x 'Blue Jay'. Myhostas.be lists it as a large hosta - I suspect that is incorrect (Hallson lists as M).

Love the colors, though hasn't really taken off so far for me(planted 2009) - growing in dappled shade under oaks. Hopefully it leaps soon. HL shows creamy yellow margins - though in my garden it takes most of the summer to get there. Low growing habit. There's a nice pic on Fransen's site.

I do like this one, but is the color accurate? I don't believe I've ever seen a hosta that blue--but then, there are lots of hosta I've never seen, so what do I know? LOL

Here is my H.'Mourning Dove' this morning as comparison. The margin has not changed yet to yellow or gold. The leaf on top is from a H.'Blue Umbrellas'. I planted MD in July 2009. Bernd

Beautiful pictures everyone !!! My Mourning Dove arrived yesterday from Hallson. It had been on my Wishlist for some time, but it was one of those I wanted to see in person before I sealed the deal. Well . . . I saw it alright . . . and it ended up on an Invoice. :) The soft tones blend nicely together. Putting this sort of variegation on a longer more cascading leaf only adds to the overall appeal. Vanessa . you donÃ¢ÂÂt post very often, but when you do I am floored every time by your immaculate specimens. You grow some of the healthiest hostas I have ever seen. I fill a tube feeder with a millet, corn and sunflower mix, and no catch tray. The birds eating from this feeder drop enough seed to feed the mourning doves on the ground. You could also try putting a tray feeder right at ground level for the doves. I love watching the antics of the doves, and these techniques have worked well to encourage their presence with all the other birds at our feeders.

Very nice indeed. Recently I received 5 White Dove from 2 different nurseries, and they are also small and lovely.

I wanted to find out if the "doves" are all related as the "mouse ears" are. Reckon they share the family tree of White Dove?

I have several really blue hosta which lost a bunch of their blue coating with the heavy rains this last week. But if the first photo is a true color rendition, I'd say I had one Lederhosen, at the first, which was that blue. It isn't now, though. Sad to say.
