Tomato leaves 'coiled up'?

I have several plants in my hydroponic ebb and flow system that have older leaves curling slightly upwards, and new growth rolling or spiraling together.

New growth spiraling/coiled up.

Some leaves also curl upwards, but no sign of yellowing or spots:

I am obviously worried that this is a disease/virus. I'm growing heirloom tomatoes such as Cherokee purple, Green Zebra, Brandywine, Black Krim, although pictured is a Better Boy hybrid.

Could it be that my watering schedule of every 2 hours during the day is too much?

Details:

My E.C. is 2.0, my P.h. stays around a 6, my nutrient solution is kept refrigerated at a constant 67 degrees.

My reply:

Thanks for your help, I think you are DEAD ON! I recently upped my nutrient E.C. from 1.2 to a 2.0.

I did this b/c a tech at General Hydroponics said I should, but he also asked if my plants had fruit. I like a dummy said yes, but that's not the whole picture.

Due to this being my first time hydroponic grow, logistical problems were encountered causing me to have variably aged plants in my system.

My oldest plants do have fruit and haven't been affected; but, the problems are being exhibited on plants that were placed into the system later and they are younger and DO NOT have fruit.

My reservoir change is due in a couple of days and I plan on reducing my E.C. back to a 1.3.

I'm also thinking of tinkering with my watering schedule to see how long it takes for my plants to begin to wilt and then adjust my watering so that they are flooded a little bit before the wilt begins.

Thanks a million for your advice and I'll post an update as to what ends up happening.

I just responded to this elsewhere, too, though not on the one Randy replied on. How many sites did you post this to? I said pretty much the same thing as Randy except that I don't think you are watering too often. Especially if you reduce the EC and transition to bloom.

Supersteak is a slightly wispy foliage plant and fasciated (fused) stems such in your pic are fairly common IME with it. The leaf roll in the bottom pic (and the stems in the top) is indicative as Donna said of soil moisture problems. If you have been getting heavy rains, much more than normal, that would explain it. If not then you have a watering issue - over-watering. Leaf roll poses no real threat to the plant as long as you eliminate the cause if possible. Dave

Yep, sure looks like herbicide damage. Been wondering when all these discussions would turn up as they do every spring. If you haven't sprayed any then check with neighbors. It can drift for a mile or more. If no spraying at all in the area then it was in the mulch or other additive. Depending on the type used they may recover. Dave

It could be stress, too much sun, insufficient roots for the amount of sun, overwatering, lack of acclimatization, etc. Some viruses have that as a symptom. The variety might be used to a more temperate climate. I would remove the oldest leaves of the plant if I were you (although that is experimental advice to stimulate new leaf growth, which leaves might not be as prone to curling). Maybe give it some extra potassium/phosphorus, too, to help the roots (without adding extra nitrogen, unless it's already low nitrogen). If your tomato is determinate, you may want to be more careful about removing leaves.

Seedlings' biggest need is usually nitrogen, and sometimes they get deficient in Mg. Overwatering leaches out those nutrients and causes sickly, yellowing plants that don't thrive. A purple tinge from Phos deficiency is common for seedlings, even without deficiency in the growing medium, as roots have chronic difficulty managing P when underdeveloped and/or in small containers, and it corrects itself as the plant develops a good root system once planted out in a big container or in the ground. The product you're using doesn't seem to provide much N and mentions nothing about Mg. I wouldn't go futzing around with it now since you're close to plant out. Many a beginning gardener tries to correct a problem immediately that plant-out will solve only to overshoot and end up damaging seedlings further or killing them. Just make sure plants have nutrients after plant-out. I usually mix in some general-purpose organic granular into the soil around the planting hole (something like Espoma Garden-Tone or even Plant-Tone) or give one good dose of fish emulsion a few days after plant out, depending on what I have on hand. Once plants start flowering, I start feeding a tomato-specific fertilizer routinely. Tomato formulas will have comparatively lower N and more P and K than general-purpose fertilizers. Too much N later in the season results in huge, lush plants that just want to grow leaves and not flowers or fruit, but early in the season, plants benefit from some more N to give them a good start, especially if they're showing signs of deficiency at plant-out. A soil test to determine exactly what your soil needs is the most conscientious approach, of course, but if your plants don't show signs of nutrient problems once in the ground, it's probably fine to go with a balanced formula specifically for tomatoes once your plants start setting fruit. It sounds like you might be attracted to a more organic approach, so something like Espoma Tomato-Tone or Jobe's Organic Tomato fertilizer has served me very well in the past, and these are readily available at many common retailers.

@ Joe: I posted my problem to four forums looking for help. I figured the more opinions I had the better?

Thanks for taking the time to respond and help me. I think you're exactly right and I plan on implementing your advice today.

I have been flushing the system with water at every reservoir change (10-14 days) but didn't think to test the flush water to see how much residue there was.
