Bought a 5 gallon Pomegranite tree need advice.
Comments (20)Thanks Brandon and Al for the replies. I'm not sure that I'm totally convinced though. I've started both poms and figs from long cuttings in situ where only the tips are left above ground with no noticible problems with rot. On the other hand I did have problems once when I tried to protect some small fig plants from winter freezing by covering them with dark mulch. The mulch became soggy, heated up during the day, cooled off/froze at night. The bark split, and the wood rotted. Those covered with poor (low/no organic matter), dry clay soil did fine -- the clay didn't trap the moisture, or heat up during the day like the dark mulch....See MoreVanilla strawberry pre-bloom
Comments (15)Springwood, I found VS does best with ideally 6 hours of direct morning sun and then afternoon shade. It needs the sun to grow and produce nice flowering stems, but the flowers are adversely affected but intense afternoon sun. Mine gets morning sun and is then shaded by the house and tree from afternoon sun. That's why I believe it's In a happy spot. I have other VS that get some afternoon sun too and the flowers, at least in prior seasons, have not been as nice. We'll see what happens this year...See MoreVanilla Strawberry as it Looks Today
Comments (90)Stunning! Wow, what an improvement from your first photos. I see you’ve redone the stairs also. So beautiful. And I’ll bet those neighbors appreciate the beauty as well 😜 although it looks like they planted something on their side of the fence as well. It seems you inspired them. We have quite a few lookie-loos here in our neighborhood, so I would actually like it if the VS could grow to partially cover that front window. I do plan on keeping up with pruning so they don’t become beautiful beasts. However, I am mentally prepared to have to adjust the placement of these plantings in the future if needed. Based on the photos in this thread it seems like they could begin to bully the Bobos once they take off. Here is a photo of the other side of the house as well, for symmetry’s sake. Excuse the messy mulch. I was moving the grasses around....See MorePlanted hedge of Vanilla Strawberry
Comments (13)Remember any pruning you do should be done late winter/early spring. After that you'll likely end up losing the flowers for that season. As it grows you may notice it gets leggy or flops. If that happens prune late winter/early spring. You can prune just the floppy branches or prune the whole thing to keep it symmetrical. When I prune I generally do the whole thing to keep it symmetrical. Don't worry about messing up. Whatever you prune will grow back and then some....See Moreroseberri, z6
