Cherry Berry Sport

I will take a picture of this one in the morning. A couple of years ago, I divided a sport off a Cherry Berry that was solid green, and divided those eyes into 4 pieces. Once of those pieces is now about 3' across, deep glossy green leaves and becoming slightly puckered. The other three are just green, no red stems or anything and not nearly as big. Looks like some pretty neat plant! I know I have to move it; thinking it would be a smallish plant, didn't give it enough space and it is overwhelming its' neighbors!

I expected I would get Maraschino Cherry, but this isn't it! Anybody else have Cherry Berry throw a sport like this?

I'm still waiting for the picture :) It would be surprising to get a puckered Maraschino Cherry from Cherry Berry, so will be interested to see it.

Sorry, been a bit busy here in Joplin. It's easily 3' across, and definitely NOT Maraschino Cherry. The scapes are not purple, or reddish, but green and as thick as my little finger. The flowers are light purple. This sport is 4 yrs old in this spot and the center leaves are definitely showing signs of puckering. I divided this sport out of Cherry Berry and divided it quite ruthlessly into 5 pieces, 4 of which survived my massacre and only one got this big. The one next to it is about half the size, same age as this one.

I'm so confused! Can no one provide specifics on what these plants need so that I don't kill them when I finally get them in my garden? lol I just got F&E this year in a trade & put it in a location of about 50-70-percent shade (sun is virtually all dappled & not direct) in the front garden, so it will get lots of care & notice. Where do you guys have the most success with it? Also, I have a GE look alike NOID, and am supposed to be getting another GE (real, this time) in a trade. My NOID look-alike is in a similar setting to the F&E. It's growing, but slowly. I don't have Cherry Berry yet, but it is a beautiful Hosta.

Hmmmm...hard to know for certain what happened, but this plant does not show any characteristics that relate it to Cherry Berry...IMO. Maybe a rouge seedling in your CB?? I'm interested to hear what Chris thinks!

Like Josh, I also suspect a rouge seedling. You just can't get a "sport" to change that much, but you can definitely get a seed to drop into the middle of a clump and then grow within that clump so much that it could appear to become part of the plant. Do you have a Hosta 'Francee' nearby? I've seen Francee or other fortunei seedlings look like that.

Hmm. There is a Francee very close to it. But it was only in my garden for 2 yrs when it developed that aberration, hardly enough time for a seedling to get that big, and the
"sport" was as big as Cherry Berry itself, if not bigger, one whole side of it. I had to cut it off with a knife so it wasn't like it was a separate plant. There were 5 eyes plus what was left of Cherry Berry (not much). Only one of those eyes got this big.

Not saying it couldn't have been a seedling, Chris amd Josh, but it doesn't seem likely. Could a seedling have actually grown that fast? Five eyes in two years? This was a new bed, new Cherry Berry, big old Francee that had been transplanted, 4' away. I should say that Francee has never dropped any seedlings that I have found. I usually cut off the scapes before they go to seed.

Compare the bloom time and flowers of Cherry Berry and this mystery plant. Flowers rarely change during sporting. If they bloom at the same time with identical flowers, they may be related. If they bloom at different times with different flowers, it is almost certain they are not related.

I'll do that. Whatever it is, it's kind of a cool plant, I like it. If I can't figure it out, I might name it Mystere. If you are a Cirque d' Soleil fan, you'll get the connection.
