Cherry Berry

I bought Cherry Berry this year, and then saw it turning up on many of your "avoid" lists. I was worried I'd wasted a prime spot on a dud. Well, it is doing fine so far, and it has sent up the most beautiful red flower stems! If it doesn't make it next year, hey, it was under $10, like all my hostas. I also have a Great Expectations from last year that has come back much bigger. Maybe the fussier ones like my yard? It certainly isn't that they like my care, which consists of weeding and watering, the end. No pampering whatsoever!

I have luck with both Cherry Berry and Great Expectations. However, I do not have luck with Fire & Ice.
I think that it's just hit-or-miss with location, conditions, etc.

I'm a Great Expectations serial killer, wanted dead or alive.

However Cherry Berry grows like a weed for me. Slugs like it a lot, that's the only problem.

"I used half a lemon in each batch for pectin". That won't help much.. Adding lots of sugar and a lot of cooking will be needed to get it to set without an added pectin. Lemon, if its the rind as well as juice may give you a little set, but because its of a citrus origin, it may need many weeks to set.

Petioles are leaf stems. Scapes are flower stems. Paisley Print doesn't have any red, but beautiful variegation in the leaves. There is one offered right now on the Hosta Library Auction called Cranberry Wine. Ahhh...I think I agree with Ken & I'm "just not that into it" for the space that I have. Too bad...my mom SO WANTED me to get it! hey j, I attached some "arty" photos of my back garden. It's always a work in progress but this is its 5th year & I'm getting pleased ( SO hard to please a perfectionist!!!) So, to all...any suggestions for another smallish hosta--more hardy-- that might look as good as the Cherry Berry next to my 2 Palace Purple heuchera? Unfortunately, I like the whitish-yellow & green coloring of the Cherry Berry next to the Palace Purple burgundy/green. Not sure I can get that with the 1 1/2 hours of direct sun. Poo! center>

I have luck with Cherry Berry and Fire and Ice. Great Expectations diminished this year.

I'm so confused! Can no one provide specifics on what these plants need so that I don't kill them when I finally get them in my garden? lol

I just got F&E this year in a trade & put it in a location of about 50-70-percent shade (sun is virtually all dappled & not direct) in the front garden, so it will get lots of care & notice. Where do you guys have the most success with it?

Also, I have a GE look alike NOID, and am supposed to be getting another GE (real, this time) in a trade. My NOID look-alike is in a similar setting to the F&E. It's growing, but slowly.

I don't have Cherry Berry yet, but it is a beautiful Hosta.

Love the plant but I keep mine in a pot.
Reason is the slugs love it. It's a slug magnet.

Right now it's beginning to bloom...it's a beauty, enjoy.

Hi Hostared.I have real good luck with Great expectations and Cherry Berry.Do not be afraid to grow a plant because it made an "avoid" list.If it does not grow well than move it and if it still does not grow well than send it to me.Phil

I just went out and took a pic of my Cherry Berry. I moved her three times before I found a spot she likes. This picture was taken about 12:30 pm and you can see how much sun she is in. She has early morning sun and some afternoon. I do have to keep slug bait around her though. Small price to pay for those lovely red scapes she is sending up now.

This is one of my Fire and Ice. It gets all morning sun. I broke this pice off of last year while moving the mother plant. It's planted under a Dawn Redwood tree.
I didn't find Fire and Ice fussy in my garden.

My GE is in high filtered light and grows rather slowly.

that's a beautiful pic of your Cherry Berry! mine isn't in that much sun, but it gets quite a bit in the morning, and I also have mine near a little bench! i figured I would want to be able to sit down and really admire the color.
