birds pulling up my corn!
Comments (7)Thanks for the quick responses! I had crows in KY, but lived where acres of field corn surrounded me so guess the birds never bothered my little patch of corn. Of course I would have to put dixie cups over each ear after pollination to keep out the crows then.... I think I will try again. I do have an owl in the garage and a crook, so I'll try that. Looks like I'll have to protect my beans too I guess. Thanks all!...See MoreTip of one corn stalk eaten... grrrrrr!!
Comments (6)Thanks, Folks. We don't have slugs, squirrels, or ground hogs (nor any critters, other than a few neighborhood cats that are left outdoors now and then), and I hadn't seen any evidence whatsoever of any cutworms in the garden before, so my first assumption would be birds. I just put a bunch of netting up over the beds, so hopefully this won't happen again. And hopefully the little stalk will recover and grow, since as Dave said, it's still small and young. Yep: A normal but annoying part of gardening. ;-) Thanks again, Jodi...See Morebirds eating my seedlings?
Comments (5)I've had the same problem. I had nice seedlings I planted out and those got dug up and chewed on by some creature and I am betting a squirrel. Then I started them direct sown and they came up and looked gorgeous and I covered them with a milk crate but I kept feeling like they wouldn't get enough sun so I took them off one day and now I have 2 left. So I just planted more yesterday!! I am determined to have sunflowers this year. I have a new idea. I have some bird netting and I am going to rig something up with that so the seedlings are safe until they get large enough to fend for themselves. Keeping my fingers crossed. :-) pm2...See Morebirds! snipping off my plants!!!
Comments (3)Could be cutworms -- insect larva that live underground, come out at night, cut plants off at ground level and leave most of it on the ground uneaten. Birds are more likely to eat seeds and fruit not leaves. Birds do eat cutworms and are likely in your garden digging to find the worms. Here is a link that might be useful: Cutworms...See Moretakadi
