Lindac and late emerging hosta

So a big lush hosta that waited until it was safe to put out ner leaves would be a true blessing.

I think the first question asked when considering a new hosta is how LATE does it emerge. You've heard all the stories about late freezes and you and I have suffered at the hands of the elements, the best solution is late emerging hosta.

Or, maybe doing what I think I'll do next year, covering those that do come up
especially early, with those things folks who have roses use! I'm thinking it might
help delay them a tad--ever tried doing something like that?

EO...I think we are on the same page...
I have only had Sagea going on it's 3rd season...the first spring after it wintered at my house....it got zapped....but recovered. This year I got smart and when we had a threat of a late freeze, sagea was up more than most so I put a box over it that night. It's fine, but Guac got nipped. It was so hidden in the leaves I didn't even realize it was so precocious...
Yep, give me the shy violet hosta....much easier than running around the yard on a cold evening with liquor boxes and bricks!

Arrggghhh - I love/hate this time of year!!! So much is showing buds, yet some are holding back. Most of my hostas are showing buds. Only one echinacea is showing a sprout/bud. I bought 2 spireas at HD last Fall, for $2.99 each - one was Snowmound, the other unnamed. Unnamed has lots of tiny reddish flowers on it - gorgeous. Snowmound shows no signs of life. I thought I'd cut it back 'in general', and the first branch was alive, so I've stopped. I guess it needs a little more time. I should update my journal!!! I have 2 forsythia, either side of the front steps - I left them last year so long, I was certain they were dead. Then, in late May, they leaved out. They need to go to a sunnier space...do you think boxwood would do well there, in mostly not sun??? Nancy.

It has plantaginea in it's lineage and they like warmth to start growing well. Your in SW Pa and if I recall you didn't have the really warm temps we had here in NE Pa in March so that may have something to do with it being slow. My plantaginea is not coming up yet as are not most of the hybrids with that specie in the genes. Scott

Mine is planted in pretty much full sun, next to August Moon, and in front of Key West. Out of a little over 200 hosta it was one of the first up and completely unfurled. I still have a few dozen that are just starting to unfurl. Rainforest Sunrise has been up for probably two weeks or more.

fire island dulls up pretty fast.. its only claim to fame.. its early bright color... later.. its just another yellowish-green hosta with a white edge ... BTW ... a yellow hosta the stays yellow .. with a white edge is nearly terminal.. no chlorophyll ... it either has to green.. or it dies ... bet you cant name 3 hosta that are yellow and white.. and stay a vivid yellow ... proceed to make a liar of me.. lol ken

How many years are like that, 1 out of 3, doesn't matter it is way to often to go through the pain and work and fear and suffering and posting "oh I hope the predicted freeze doesn't get mine tonight".

If someone came out with var like "Lakeside X" that said Hosta'Late Roy El' or Hosta'Late Sew Patsy' etc I would sign up for the whole series. You know some have their "Chastian Garden" or "Benedict Garden" I would have my "Late Garden".

I would even stop warning everyone in the fall to mulch and don't take it off until the plants push through. Then we the "Late Hosta Growers" would smugly muse about those poor folks running around the garden with sheets, buckets, boxes and God knows what covering then rising at the buttcrack of dawn to go out to see what was damaged.

I would get up leisurely, have a cup of coffee chuckle at those poor folks.

Now what do I do with all these plants I have and who has the "Late Series"?

I once tried to start a thread asking everyone to post when various varieties came up so we could judge which were late rising but no one responded, should have started it again last spring when so many were in so much pain.

Here in Ontario, I have never experienced hostas freezing. Not sure why. Some of mine now are up 8 and 10 inches and then this morning, I saw a tiny bit of "Orange Marmalade" emerging - so that is a late one, for sure.

Also interesting, I have a ring of undulata around an oak tree....been there for years and years. They are always the first to emerge and never have gotten zapped by a freeze.
Could it be that certain hosta just do better withstanding a freeze? Or is it the bare branches of that pin oak that gives the protection?

Summer Snow in the front, Kinkaku and On Stage
I lost all 3 of these last year to summer blight. Plus the Patriot on the left and the Whirlwind on the right and about 90% of that gorgeous little weeping maple.

Jimmy Crack Corn is a bit ahead of On Stage, Fugibotan is a bit later than On Stage, at least here in western NY. They are just finally poking up from the earth.

Yeah....one that is just poking it's eyes up has a label that says "Great Expectations"....and already I'm disappointed!!

Add "Topaz" to the list of late starting plants. It's May 15th, and both of mine are just starting to show.

I find that montana Mountain Sunrise is the very last to emerge in my garden. It's just started peaking through in the last few days.

I have a lovely montana sunrise hosta that has been under a tree for 15 years. The tree just got knocked down by another tree during a bad storm in our neighborhood. What will sun until 3:30 do to it? should I move it. I love its delicate leaves and yellow green color and it has never frozen out. Neither have to other 2 that I don't know what they are. I do have vinca around them. Perhaps that is why. Or maybe Indiana is in a good zone.
