Is The Shining a Late Emerging Hosta

Does any one know whether The Shining is a late emerger? I'm seeing sprouts on almost all my hostas (which makes me crazy cause it's way too early). The exceptions are Mt. Snow (it's always late) and The Shining. Nance

It's a sport of Cathedral Windows so that doesn't mean that it should be late. It's too new a cultivar. I doubt many people have much experience with it.

The tree is tall enough that no branches were ever under snow. It's at least 12' tall. I think I may have been unclear when I said there were only leaves low down. There are leaves on the lower third of the tree, and progressively fewer as you go higher, but there are signs the higher branches are not dead, there are little green leaves emerging. It just seems that for June 6 it should be much more leafed out. And overall, even near the bottom (the bottom branches being about least 4' off the ground), there are fewer leaves than I would expect. We are right on the border of zone 5B/6A. There are all kinds of dogwoods all over this area, including Florida. We are near the seacoast, almost in NH. How can I tell if the little buds are dead? If I cut one open would it be dry rather than green? The nursery does offer a warranty, but for a $600+ tree I bet they'll want it to be much more dead than it is. I'd say 1/3 has no leaves, but the other third is thinly leaved. Not to mention the utter pain of getting it out. The rootball was enormous, and it is now part of a garden that would have to be completely dismantled to get it out (think 5-6 hydranges, 10 hosta, other perennials, landscaping rock.). It would be a nightmare. Heavy equipment was used to bring it in, and there is now a lawn in place. Ugh. Should I feed it or anything? Thanks.

As a general rule ... Hosta emerge 30 to 45 days after the snow clears the ground above it ... or the same period after the last freezing temperature of winter. If you've reached your mid-season for your gardening zone and you've not seen your hosta where it ought to be then there is a fair chance that the plant either: Froze out. This means you will find remains of rhizomes under the ground with no living tissue ... or ... Experienced Crown Rot. wouldnt it be easier to list the ones that are missing.. and ask about those specifically???? its in the heritage .... the genetics .... if we know the name.. we can trace the parents.. and that is what is going to tell us much about them .... that said.. if planted too deep ... they could just be late .... ken

I have 2 of its sibling, 'Dream Queen', one planted in a pot and the other in the garden. The one in the pot is up fairly early and has about 8 or 9 shoots, the one in the garden has MUCH bigger leaves, is always one of the very last ones to nose up, BUT, it's only 2 shoots. And it's been in that spot since 2006! So, it's slow, both in terms of emerging as well as maturing. Wouldn't wanna do without it though, in spite of all that! Pieter

Nance, can't say it is slow or late here. I took this picture of the plant this morning. It sits among the other hosta staged in containers on my brick courtyard where it gets some shade and a bit of sunshine.

And in this shot, The Shining is directly behind the umbrella pole, shining brightly in the shade.

It has plantaginea in it's lineage and they like warmth to start growing well. Your in SW Pa and if I recall you didn't have the really warm temps we had here in NE Pa in March so that may have something to do with it being slow. My plantaginea is not coming up yet as are not most of the hybrids with that specie in the genes.

I'll remain hopeful. All of my other plantaginea have sprouted but none have unfurled. The Shining hasn't even sprouted, but maybe soon . . . You can see, though, from mocassinlanding's pic why I got it. N

Don't love Steven King so much, but totally love Jack Nicholson--I think he just plays HIMSELF in his best roles.

Thanks, Nance! When yours begins to grow it won't take it long to be just like mine. It's one that changed overnight from a tiny thing to multiple leaves.

Cathedral Windows was one of the last to come up at my house. Mine is still young, though. Lots of other plantaginea offspring were early. So Sweet was the first one to unfurl this year.
