Help me plan which hydrangeas to put in certain spots?

Hello! Newbie here. We recently moved to a house (our first with an actual yard) that has no landscaping. I'm planning to put hydrangeas in some spots in the shady, west-facing front yard -- not ideal, I know. I've bought a couple quickfires and fuji waterfalls but I'm open to buying more hydrangeas. :) Note: this is a natural-looking, informal, semi-woodsy setting, so I prefer lacecaps to mopheads here (though I do like the look of a nice Annabelle too). I think white flowers would probably look most appropriate and show up best in the shade.

So here are the locations.

1. Front of the house, near the house. Partial shade with some afternoon sun. This one should be smallish so it doesn't block the windows of the split-level house. House is yellow, for color consideration. I was planning to put a quickfire here but it seems it will get too big. This will share a bed with some hostas, maybe a couple yellow rhododendrons for early color, possibly some zinnias and/or salvia.

2. South edge of a stand of trees to one side of the front yard. This is partial shade with some afternoon sun. Medium size is fine here. Planning some fuji waterfalls and one or two quickfires for this area.

3. In the middle of the stand of trees mentioned in #2. This is the shadiest of the locations, but the trees are high and upright so I'm hoping there's enough sun for a shade-loving hydrangea. Would love something really big with white flowers here. Veitchii??

Couple more preferences: Hardy, long bloom season, and strong enough not to flop.

Please excuse all the criteria and overthinking ... been waiting a long time for a yard to plan out. :)

Paniculatas (like Quickfire) can tolerate a lot of sun, so would be suitable for those locations that offer morning shade and afternoon sun (hotter and more intense). Any of the macrophyllas would prefer the opposite - morning sun and afternoon shade or all day dappled or filtered shade. Same with the Annabelles.

Annabelles tend to be floppy :-) H. paniculata 'Little Lamb' is a more compact form so you may want to consider this for in front of the windows. And I'd think about including an oakleaf (H. quercifolia) as well. These will tolerate a good deal of sun also, white flowers and have great foliage, including wonderful fall color. And they come in dwarf varieties as well ('Pee Wee', 'Syke's Dwarf', 'Little Honey').

Thanks for the response! I like the oakleafs except we have so many oak trees I want a little variety in leaf shape. :)

I started browsing the more purple varieties, especially purplish lacecaps ... now I'm drooling over purple tiers, lilacina, Midoriboshi-Temari. Or maybe a blue billow. I'd better not find a hydrangea sale or I'm in trouble.

Incidentally, I was looking up how to test soil pH (figured you just buy a kit at the home improvement store, but googled it anyway) and found the following helpful link. Ha.

My profile used to say zone 5 ME, I just noticed it says just Z5 now. Sorry. I'm on the border of zone 5b/6a (I generally plant for zone 5, and take a chance on some zone 6 perennials), in the southern-most area of Maine about 3 miles inland from the ocean. The house faces east, so the tree is on the north east corner. Full sun. The wind generally comes down a hill from the north (across the open yard). The spot where the tree is, is 12' from the house, I could move it out further for the right tree, but I don't want a 40' wide tree there. The native soil has quite a bit of clay, but when we built the beds last year we removed quite a bit and brought in sand and loam with compost. That garden you see there was planted less than one year ago. I have a Bloodgood Maple in another bed in the back yard (the northwest corner of the house) that gets the same wind and is doing well, also planted last year. Pests...well, I have Japanese Beetles I'm handpicking off a rose bush and a hybiscus. I don't have any lilies, but if I did have them I'd have lily leef beetles on them. No Gypsy Moths in this area that I know of. I can't think of anything else. Humidity...typical New England, summers can be humid, but it's not as bad as, say, Boston (the average high in July is 83). We get maybe 5 days a summer above 90. I just looked up the precipitation, we get between 3.4 and 4.8 inches per month. May-September is just under 4" per month. I want an ornamental tree, I know it sounds cliche, but this is a prominent position in the yard (and from the street), so I want something pretty. Except in bloom, I don't really think of Crabapples as pretty. I also considered Kwanzan Cherry, but I was told they can split in windy locations. I'd like something that will reach 20', but won't exceed 30'. The current spot was chosen for the size the Aurora Dogwood would have reached, but I can move the spot out to accomodate a tree that will get wider than 20' (there aren't any pipes or anything in the way). I have a snow mountain paniculata and it is gorgeous. It fits your height/width and sun requirements perfectly. I personally like them better than pee-gees because the blooms do not overwhelm the tree and flop about. It really is quite a graceful and lovely tree. Mine is just starting to bloom now and will continue until September.... so it's a very long blooming tree. It has not been fussy at all. Quite honestly, I believe it has survived in SPITE of us. 5 years in the ground we never pruned it, rarely watered it.... we just recently got into gardening last year, and that poor tree was pretty much on it's own before that. I do have issues with the fact that because I never pruned it, it is leaning to one side---the heavier side (that I should have evened out seasons ago.) I take full responsibility for that issue though!

That would depend on a place where you are planning to put your container(s). Enziandom is a show-off hydrangea and deserves a such spot where it always be a conversational piece. In ground it grow rather wider than tall, but in container may behave differently. BTW, it has a lacecap sister-version, Nachtigale (Nightingale). All Domotoi I ever saw was very pale washed denim blue. Not a my cup of tea, but again, all depend of where you want to place it. Claudie is a very interesting hydrangea, but beside the bloom time it has nothing interesting to show after. The same apply to the Blue Bird, though since it is a serrata and seems to be most hardy of all common varieties, you may even could try it in a ground, not a container. I would, especialy for 9.99 :-) TD has those transitional color change phases as you know that could be worth to offset additional troubles you'll have by growing it in a container. I'd expect it to stay in 3x3' range (4x4' in a ground). One more thing to consider, color. In container you could easily keep soil either alcaline or acidic thus have any color you wish to, so chose the cultivar(s) of the appropriate 'natural' color you want to see. For the best red I'd chose Red Cardinal, for the best blue- Enziandom.

Thanks so much everyone! I'm reading this instead of doing my statistics midterm...so maybe that's a thanks? Instead of a thanks! Ha ha! Anyway, this year's budget is about $2k which could stretch to cover new stairs or new railings but wouldn't extend to porching out the roofline unless I learn some carpentry skills really quick. I completely 100% agree that adding a porch over the front door would be amazing. I live in a rainy climate and it is so much more welcoming that way. I totally dream of a front porch so maybe I should look into making it happen. circuspeanut and GreenDesigns, thanks so much for your photoshops. I do love the longer hat! I think I may have made a mistake by making it so high contrast ... maybe a darker beige would be better than charcoal. I have an idea involving doing the porch and the hat in one color on vinyl shake, and leaving the bottom and the side the beige. Let me think on it...but don't let me photoshop it tonight! My midterm is due at midnight. Although I like colored trim, there is no way I would paint cheap vinyl trim, thereby removing its only bonus (low maintenance) but maybe I can go shopping and see if there are multi-colored trims available? I kind of like the look of a white trim with just a little black square around it. Very tailored. I'm mixed on the barn boards. I like the look of them online but am unsure if they fit with the decided charmlessness of my builder-grade beige vinyl -- I love them on houses with shakes! Replacing and reframing the front door is probably out of the budget. Unless I could get one the same width but with skinny sidelights on either side... I too got a split home with no landscaping 3 years ago, and it's been a pleasure getting out and mucking about, adding new things (going from 0 to 18 hydrangeas - haha).

Some initial recommendations and observations of mine are:

- you are in zone 7, so you can overwinter almost any type of hydrangea with little or no bloom impairment - use sites like "hydrangeasplus" for reference on sun tolerance of over 100 different cultivars
- paniculatas (quickfire, limelight, etc) are said to need at least 5 hrs of direct sun to bloom well
- most of mine (all types) seem to like at least 5 total hours of sun; anything less results in growth and bloom impairment.
- "west wall" is the worst location by far for most, because it can get deep shade 'til at least noon-ish; I tried an Endless Summer here and it didn't grow a full leaf back until the end of May!
- arborescens (annabelle/bella anna) can tolerate all-day sun, as can similar-behaving macs like "dooley"
- "florist hydrangeas" ($10 in 4" pots on holidays) can get 4-6' big and should do well in zone 7, but may need to be placed outside in progressively sunnier locations until they can take intense natural sunlight/heat
- dwarf varieties (not exceeding 2-4' big) are available in about all types of hydrangea. For macs, I recommend the Forever&Ever and Endless Summer lines, which bloom on new wood and come in different colors. Proven Winners Cityline - different colors, old wood only. Lemon Daddy is a mac that grows 4x4' and offers near-yellow leaves and lavender blooms. Paniculata and oakleaf also have dwarves that look similar to the full sizes.
