New state, new bugs

*sigh*

No one mentioned bugs being a problem when I moved here from So. Cal.! I'd never even heard of the squash vine borer until this year. Well, tonight I got up and real personal with one on my bush pink banana squash. I was able to grab him (or her) after running inside to get an id off of the computer :-) and smush the little bugger. Then I went on to do some inspection. I ended up cutting open 6 of my 7 winter squash plants and pulling out the larve. Gardening is not for the faint of heart! I then covered up the split vine with dirt. * maybe* it'll survive.

So, are these SVBs gonna be around for the rest of summer? Will I need to do daily checks until frost (if they survive)?

And Japanese beetles?! I'd never heard of them either! I've only seen one on my beans so not too much trouble there but I saw plants covered with hundreds (all mating too by-the-way) at a local park this evening.

I'm loving living in this state but California was way easier where bugs are concerned! (even with my horrible earwig trouble last year!).

Some years are worst than others. In the past few years there have been alot of different insect problems. I'm afraid the answer to your question is, wait and see. I've been fighting insects all season. I use an insectide, but only as a last resort and sparingly . I hate poisons, but it is the only method that works with some things. Good Luck!

The unofficial Iowa State Bug ... the Mosquito, has been absent from my yard so far this year probably thanks to the weather in June. With West Nile Disease spreading all over many cities in Iowa have spray programs.

So far in 2006, my town has not sprayed my area. But last year they sprayed 3 times. Where I live I have an alley behind the house and I live on a corner lot so I get sprayed fore and aft and on the side when the trucks are out.

Last year (with the spray)we had almost no lightning bugs, crickets, or dragon flies...a coincidence? However, the flies, skeeters and boxelder bugs were all over.

This year the lightning bugs are back, and the skeeters and flies are hard to find. I finally found a spray that actually worked on the boxelder bugs so they are all in bug heaven now.

Now, I can hardly wait until the faux ladybugs showup after Labor Day.

For an easy overview of the unfamiliar garden plants you're seeing, you might go to the local public library and look for books about garden plants for your region. And if you're looking for a particular book your library doesn't own, their Interlibrary Loan service can obtain it for you (sometimes charging a small fee). === "Plants for a Livable Delaware" talks about invasive plants which should be avoided, and those which might be substituted for particular invasives. http://www.dnlaonline.org/information/plants_for_delaware.php === The University of Delaware Botanic Garden has -- besides the garden itself -- plant info, events, plant sales, etc.: http://ag.udel.edu/udbg/ === NCSU has wonderful lists of garden plants in various categories (bulbs to trees, and everything in between). I've seen this information in the same format for other states, so I assume there's a USDA database which the states adapted for their particular climates. Unfortunately I could not locate such a database for Delaware (though that doesn't mean there isn't one). Anyway, NC's zones include DE's zones, so the NC database would be useful for you: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/factsheets/index.html First, click on the category you're interested in. Then choose whichever arrangement of data presentation is most useful. Don't ignore the "By Scientific Name" and "By Common Name" at the top of each category.

If I were you, I would choose the forum that best suits your plants. For example, I grow a lot of fruit and edible plants; I also trade plants and seeds and hvae a vegetable garden. I post on these forums, fruit, vegetables, plant trade, seed trade, gardening, edible landscape and Virginia.

Licensing and competence are two different, largely unrelated, things. Folks on this forum talk about contractors licenses as though they are some kind of magic bullet that guarantees properly done work. T'ain't so. House wiring, except in unusual circumstances, isn't rocket surgery. The code is reasonably clear, it doesn't take long to read the parts related to house wiring. Read it and then look and see if it's being followed. If you pay attention to box fill, support of the wires, grounding, how the connections are made, and correct use of AFCI/GFI circuits you'll cover most of the likely errors. There seems to be a correlation between neatness of the work and the likelihood that it's been done right. It irks the heck out of me to pay a licensed hack to do work badly when I know I can do better myself. (I've pulled my own permits in other jurisdictions where that's allowed and have gotten only compliments on the work from sometimes very skeptical inspectors.) In our state work can be done "under the supervision" of a licensed electrician, which means that most of the electrical contractors have one or two licensed guys and 20 people of unknown competence actually pulling the wires and making the connections. The licensed guy doesn't need to be on site to "supervise". Our previous (brand new) house had a half dozen readily visible code violations installed by a licensed electrician (or under his supervision). He was a buddy of the inspector, so the inspector didn't need to actually look at the work it seems.

I'm from ND so I know ALL about mosquitos! I couldn't believe it when I took a walk one evening, early summer and didn't have to swat myself silly.

As for lightning bugs - they are pretty magical. I was driving down a road one night that didn't have any street lights lining it. The lightning bugs were dancing throughout the ditches. I'd never seen anything like it!

Update on the SVB's - One of my attacked pink banana squashes looks pretty sick but better than a day ago so maybe it'll pull through. Whatcheer - thank you for your response. I only use chemicals as a last resort too. I feel wierd about using them on my veggies (even if they are organic controls).

Yup, "wait and see" is good advice. Next year, it will be "same state, different bugs!" ;-)

This is the first year I've seen Japanese Beetles. I would have been surprised to find one, but I'm shocked that I've found three in the past week! I guess conditions must be right for them? They're chomping down my flower foliage like there's no tomorrow! However, It may be my own doing because I haven't used any pest repellants.

On the bright side... this year I found a Swallowtail butterfly caterpillar chowing down on Butterfly Weed--a first! To the butterfly larva I say (a la "dinnertime" parlance), COME AND GET IT! :D
