use a salimeter instead of a (much) more expensive tds/ec meter

Hello

Is it possible to use a salimeter (hydrometer) to measure ppt for nutrient instead of a more expensive EC/TDS meter ?

I see it should work, has anybody used a hydrometer to measure nutrient strength. For the hobbyist, not the comercial grower.

Should I pay attention to the scale that the hydrometer can measure ? Any conversion tables at hand that you want to share ?

The salimeter I plan to buy is VERY cheap (about 6$) compared to an EC/TDS meter that I could buy for >100$ and that needs replacement electrodes after a while.

Would this be good for my purpose (it's scale is 1.000 to 1.040) ?

Thanks for any hints
