Planted 3 weeks ago and thinking about moving them already.

Because of new purchases I'm thinking about moving things around. Please tell me I'm not the only one! I'm also going to make it much, much bigger. I am basically starting over, only one hosta was left from my previous gardening years.

Once I enlarge and plant the other sitting in pots it will look better I think. Big Daddy is in the back. I'm thinking of putting Sagae there. What do you think? And moving Queen Josephine to put in June. Maybe moving Shade Fanfare out of the middle. It's so small right now. It was planted just a little too deep at the nursery and I didn't have the heart to leave it. Would Guacamole look good there? I know that I will have to move it when it gets bigger but I want it to look a little more lush right now.

Any help is appreciated. You can look at my list and see what I have. And suggestions on other colors I need would be appreciated. I know I need some lighter hostas. Sadly Platinum Tiara (my brightest) will have to be destroyed due to HVX.

It looks so pitiful. But I am thankful that I didn't plant it. It's still in a pot from our move.

So sorry about your sick hosta, I hope I'm as brave when it happens to me.

I think your garden will be grand as is - but I like Sagae better than S&S myself.
Here are some thumbnails of photos I took at Seabright's last Spring, the only mature hostas I've ever seen - see how BIG they are?

Make your changes now, you won't reget it. I like the space your left for the plants to mature. So many of the hostas we see in posts are much too cloose together.

If the Iris comes from a bulb, you'll need to keep watch for the leaves showing above ground and move it to the light pretty smartly. If it is one of the rhizome gang then keep it in good light, once you've potted it up, so the young leaves stay healthy. Make sure the plant 'just fits' the pot rather than using a big pot and lots of media. Because the roots haven't had time to get established, water VERY carefully. Over winter, unless you have the plants in a greenhouse or warmer environment, they use very little water and it can be too easy to 'drown' them or cause to rot. Be sure to plant just to the previous soil line so the crowns don't rot.

You can probably get away with soil temps a little lower than 80 degrees if growing conditions are good, especially with dark-seeded beans. Limas need higher soil temps than other beans. If your soil is very heavy, an inch may be too deep. I use a dibble to poke holes for planting beans and fill them with loose potting soil. If soil is thoroughly dampened, beans will often sprout without additional watering. This year I started pole beans indoors due to a cooler-than-normal spring. In addition to bean weevils and scavengers of rotting seeds, another possibility for the critters you saw is the corn seed maggot, which is common in good soil with a lot of organic matter.

Those are all KBG in that test rating. Yeah, Bedazzled really is awesome and exibits good performance in practically all areas of adaptation. One of Turf Merchants' competitors highly commends it, too. I don't doubt others do as well. I wish tests for powdery mildew were conducted more often or that more were available if they are conducted. Here is the 2005 turf quality ratings under shade conditions in your area. Results for PM is the 4th column. I'm not sure I would be alarmed with Morpheus' mention of PM for a number of reasons. One is that you get great resistance from both Bedazzled and Moonlight. You might want to balance the weight of the three to favor those two, like 40/40 and 20 percent Midnight/II. I think I recall suggesting that last year. Another thing is his lawn is new and new ones can't express themselves immediately, meaning their traits and characteristics, including resistances and tolerances. Still, his was not persistant as your has been. You have a lawn that is susceptible, while he doesn't. I don't expect he will have a PM problem in the future and if so, it will easily be taken care of. One thing I will surely suggest is you making sure it has not progressed into a soil-borne problem of something else before planting new seeds. Have the plants and soil tested for disease first by a plant pathology lab. Extension can handle it for you. I agree with her assessment of tall fescue in a kbg lawn. There may be reasons for mixing them in some areas, like the transition zone perhaps, but generally it isn't necessary. Ryegrass either. Been to bed twice but can't sleep. UGH

Debbie, I am so sorry for your loss, you loved your Al so much and you had done so much to make his life bearable with all his health problems, you are a wonderful person and a perfect wife to Al, he must have loved you so much too. I think it is absolutely disgusting that people would say that you are young enough to get another man, that is such a cruel thing to say to someone who just lost the love of their life. Yes, we are happy that our loved one isn't suffering any more but we still wish that they hadn't had to die for them to lose their pain. I hold onto the faith that I will see my darling husband in Heaven when I get there. I am glad that you have your children, they are a great source of comfort but the pain of the loss is excrutiating.There are a lot of things you have to take care of after a death and it can take months to get it all done but take your time. The best piece of advice I got from everyone was don't rush into anything, take you time and make sure the decision is right for you before you go ahead. My husband died three months ago and I still haven't taken his shirts out of the closet, I will soon, but when the time is right for me. The memorial by his apple tree sounds like the perfect thing and he will be smiling and saying "this is beautiful Debbie". God Bless you and your family, I wish you well. Mav. I know I needed to leave room, but it was hard not to plant closely.

I also meant to add that the fences will be replaced. They weren't installed correctly and are UGLY!

It all depends of your age! If I planted my hostas that far apart,I would never live long enough to see them as mature hostas. I happen to like the look of hostas touching each other,but that's just me. As far as where they are planted now,I never planned anything. I just planted as I acquired new plants,and I have a nice variety now. Phil

I'm 27 so I'm in no rush to make it look full.

Did you dig up and move as you bought or just plant in new areas? I have actually went out and moved some things around and think that I can get away with leaving those and just planting the new things in other areas. But my new plants are so much bigger! I'm worried that the small plants in the middle might look off.

It's wise to plant with lots of space. The first few years, mine looked nice. But yikes! I can see I'm going to have some problems next year, especially if I don't remove a few which did the "leap" thing in a big way this year.
You can always plant impatiens or whatever else you like until the hostas fill in. I don't have room for impatiens in some of my beds now. Everything is touching or almost touching.
