Hummingbirds won't leave

I live around the 46th parallel (UP of Michigan) and two female hummingbirds still have not left. They look like young ones. The males left about five weeks ago and the all of the other females left three weeks ago.

Are these birds doomed or will they finally wise up and start moving south?

They most likely are late hatches and need to bulk up a little more before they leave. I had one last year that stayed until the middle of Oct.

I had some stay around for 3 days in Southern Ontario and was worried they wouldn't go. We were having lows of 5 deg. celsius at night.
Like penny, I also think they needed to bulk up. I also think they might be waiting for a good tailwind. Once the winds changed direction they seemed to be gone.

Hi everyone, This is my first time posting to this group and I hope it is OK that I jump into this old thread. I am plantsitting five plumeria (Madagascar?) that I rescued from our office just before going into COVID lockdown. In my over-enthusiasm I put them in full sunlight on my terrace for a couple of days, and as a result, they lost almost all of their leaves over the next two weeks (the plants had been growing on our desks in the office for a couple of years and never received any direct sunlight). However, I am happy to say that, after moving them inside, four of them have sent out new leaves and are doing fine. However the fifth one only has two old leaves and no sign of any new leaves. I have noticed that although the rest of that plant seems OK, the top part where the leaf buds should appear is completely dry and brown. Note there is no sign of rotting; it is just dry. Is there anything I can do to stimulate leave growth? Should I try to score the brown part? (note that the thing to the right of the stem is a bamboo stake used to hold it up, in case that isn't clear in the photo)

Moved the phal to the garden box for more ligjt. Got my downy rattlesnake orchids in!!! (: and picked up a really big phal on clearance for 8 bucks the spike was turning brown. The moss was soaked... So I cleaned all the moss off and cut the rotting roots. Transplanted into miricle grow orchid bark. I've lost ever orchid I've bought on clearance so hopefully this will be the one lol. 1 For soil I put a thin layer of bark down then used a 2 part miracle grow posting soil and 3 part miracle grow cactus mix. The cactus mix was a 5.5 acidic soil and had sand peat moss bark chips and perilite( or what ever those white things are) composition. Lowe's recommended blending with the potting soil so I'll see what happens I guess. It looked very close to the dirt that was still on some of the root balls.

We're narrowing this down to... a dwindling selection of... none of the above. LOL! The store went out of business either the same year or year after I rescued the Philo. (The saddest thing, it was the only place in town that had a permanent selection of plants. And the nicest lady! She ordered a flat of Persian Shield for me one year.) It wasn't really a for-sale plant, and had been in a whiskey barrel as part of the store atmosphere for "a lot of years," the owner told me. I asked if she would sell a piece and she said I could dig out the whole thing & have it for a very small price. It had leaves about the same size & color as the plant in the pic above. Of course, when I got it home, I immediately chopped the stem into pieces & propagated them. The stem is bright red inside, and has reddish sap. None of the foliage has been as big as the original plant, yet. I have no idea by now which new stem grew from which cut piece of stem.

gdgroves, Im down here just north of Muskegon (a troll LOL)My hummers seem to have left just before last weekend and our first area frost. I still have my feeders up so if your little ones happen by this way they will get a good meal on the road!

I hope your hummers do leave soon , would hate to hear something happened to them as did in my most recent thread today. My sis and I have certainly had our share of death . Three close family and sis had two dogs ,all just this year. Good luck with the hummers--steve

I live near Detroit,Mi. and last year there was one here until mid November. I kept the feeder out for her plus had impatients but we had warm weather right up until she left. This year there weren't as many as last and I wondered if the hurricane had anything to do with it.

Usually if you have late stagglers they are either late season hatches that have not put on the necessary weight to start the migration or they are older or ill hummers that know instictively that they can't make the trip. Right now I have a juvenile that showed up here on Oct. 16th after our snow storm on the 12th. I have 3 different style feeders up for him but he obviously hasn't learned to use a feeder as he will only use the flowers of my surviving salvias and cannas. He is bulking up so I hope he will be able to continue on his maiden voyage to a warmer climate. I have posted pictures in a previous thread titled New Baby Showed Up 10/12/06
