This one had a deformed bill, poor thing!

I was so happy to see this Female Rufous at my feeders!! She was the 2nd rufous visitor I have had, had a male rufous visit last fall

Wow wow wow! Great pictures, at first I was going to say I like the 1st one best, then I scrolled down & I love them all! The midair shots are nice, I love the way I can see their little claws curled up. The one with the deformed bill, is very interesting. Feathers all fanned out, etc, just a great group of pics. Thanks for posting, now I get to see some hummers, since they seem to have all left Detroit.

What kind of feeder is that? It looks like glass but I can't tell.

I only trap rabbits, kitty. I could not possibly trap all the squirrels. Plus, both rabbits and squirrels are considered "pests" here in California, and you're not allowed to trap and release them, or you'll be fined. I do release the rabbits, but just to my own front yard. The squirrels would be impossible - I would be trapping hundreds of them. I use poison bait stations with non-through kill bait, so I won't kill a hawk, owl, coyote, my own dog, or a weasel that might eat the poisoned squirrel or rat. The only downside of using non-through kill bait is there is NO antidote. So, you must make sure your dog or small children cannot get to the bait. Patty S.

Do not purposely put bishop weed (Aegopodium) in your garden unless you want a solid carpet of it mixed with everything else, taking over. Carrots make insignificant foliage that could hide well around other plants until munched, and you might get some carrots to eat. There is no reason not to grow dill next to flowers. Easy to cut off the flower "branches" before the seeds fall so you don't get a dill carpet next year. Fennel is also an attractive plant but may be a thuggish perennial in your area. The butterflies actually like to have the host plants near the nectar plants. There is a butterfly forum if you'd like to delve further. Just remember, the more butterflies you attract, the more host plants will be "used" (eaten.) Add some Asclepias (milkweeds) if you want to attract monarchs. I don't know which kinds do well in your area but that should be abundantly available info in a search.

Edna, Nice photos. I agree with Konrad, but you don't even need a farm or land outside town. I live close to the center of town and have 5 hives in my small yard with room for my garden and there are other houses close by. Marie, I'd love to have you visit this summer. I could also take you over to the farm where my other hives are. It's a small farm that is licensed to sell raw milk. They also make cheese there, sell eggs, my honey,local maple syrup and just started up a small bakery. The scenery is great out here. ccrbl, Would Western Mass bees be allowed on the cover of MB? Pattie I love the sphinx moth pics. I ususaly can't get them to hold still long enough to get a pic. I was surprised I got the one to sit on my hand last week. I'll trade you all in the south a groundhog for a dillo. lol Sounds like they do the same kind of damage. Lynette I thought my butterfly gingers were really late this season because they are just getting buds so I was surprised to hear that yours are just budding up too. I hope mine have time to bloom before the first frost. Karyn

Thank you so much jomuir! I am in Baton Rouge, LA and most of mine are gone now too, just one or two a day visiting feeders. I am hoping to get some western species that visit Louisiana for winter, so I am keeping my feeders up and filled!

Thank you denlali_2007! It's a canon rebel xs, shot these with 55-250mmIS lens. This is my first dslr, I have had it about 3 years now, am thinking about upgrading. I Love the xs though, it has been a great camera and great to learn with!

Great photographs! I had more hummingbirds at my 9 feeders this fall than ever before. They have all gone on south now except for 4 or 5. Keeping the feeders filled up was getting to be work. I'm just guessing but I must have had at least 100 hummers at the peak.

How long did the female Rufous stay with you? I had a Rufous stay last winter from November 27 until January 16.

You are so lucky to have had such a wonderful bunch of visitors! I live in Alberta, Canada and we are lucky to see 2 or 3 at our feeder. My mother-in -law has a little better luck but their stay in our area is quite short. Thanks for sharing your photos.

Geneh7, Nice pic! My rufous only stayed around a few days. But, I ended up having a black-chinned hummer show up at my feeders on December 13, 2012, he turned out to be my 1st official winter hummer. He stayed for over 2 months. I assumed he was a Ruby-throat at first, because he sounded like a Ruby, so I didn't take a closer look. A few days after he showed up, I happened to notice the sound of the wing whir as he was flying away from a feeder and it got my attention because it didn't sound like a Ruby wing whir at all, then I realized that I had yet to see a red gorget, so I started to pay closer attention and I finally got a glimpse of the purple gorget. I Never managed to get a really nice photo showing the gorget though, I am hoping he comes back this winter!
