To put a label on every hosta that I put into the ground.....even if I think I will never forget!

I've been puzzling over a couple of shoots that are coming out of the ground where I didn't think there was anything but pachysandra. Today they are unfurled enough so that I recignize Sagae....has to be....nothing looks like that. I really don't remember planting it.....but I can see finding one at a huge bargain and planting it and thinking..."Well I'll recognize Sagae when it grows"....and sure enough I did!

I don't label those that have been here for years and years. And I will often carve a piece off of Antioch or August moon or golden edger to fill a space until something more favored gets mature....so unlabeled hosta usually meant...one of the ole timers.

Well this afternoon I was down in the "way back" checking on the oriole feeder and looking at the emerging hosta while I'm at it, and there's this hosta....big! rugose! vigorous! yellow edges on the leaves. According to my flawless memory (!!!!) it should be September Sun....but SS doesn't have yellow edges,,,it has yellow centers.

It really looks like Frances Williams....but too vigorous.

Maybe I'll wander down and take a picture of it...

Am I the ONLY one who does stuff like this?

I think I don't have enough to forget. But, I do. So today I bought some plant labels. I will do my best to keep up with the labels. I do have a map this year (first year for that) but I think that is too easily lost.

Just from today's hosta haul we somehow lost one of the labels. We couldn't remember it for anything. Luckily a light bulb went off later. DH told me I better put it on one of the new labels quickly.

I think if it were really Sagae, you probably would have noticed that long before it unfurled. It's one of the most distinctive shoots around.

What a touching and loving thing for you to do; your husband is a very lucky man. I too am not from your area but would think some of the smaller tea roses like Westside Rose Cream Tea would be wonderful; it blooms all the time and is bushy with lovely large blooms. There are wonderful climbers like Reve d'Or which bloom practically all the time. Cl. Pinkie is a darling rose you might consider. I hope that people from your area will chime in to help you with this wonderful project. The old roses like teas, Chinas and noisettes are beautiful and romantic, and will actually do better than many modern roses in terms of vigor and disease resistance. Chamblee's is a good on-line vendor in your part of the country. Have a look at their site and find some things you like and then you can always come back to the forum to ask advice about these. This is a wonderful project you're undertaking and we'd love to help you make it something beautiful, something your wonderful mother-in-law would have appreciated, and a peaceful spot for your husband to spend time being with her. What a nice thread. I nearly died laughing at the eggplant story! I have a memorial garden for my black lab "Friend" who passed in February. I planted several yellow rose bushes in his honor since yellow roses are for Friendship. when they bloom I think of him and it gives me the push to take extra special care of them since they are for him. I also have a rose by the name of Colleen Mary- whichis my twin sister's name. She bought it and doenst have a good spot for it and decided I shuodl save it's life. I jsut got it a few weeksago and it's miserable- so I am hoping to help it. haha I got married in my yard and gardens too..When my sister threw me my bridal shower a month before the wedding, she asked peopel to do a "wishing garden" instead of a wishing well. I already ahd all the household stuff I needed. So she asked peopel to buy perennials to decorate my landscape and rmember them by for years to come. I have so many plants now that remind me of the person who gave them to me for my bridal shower. it always amazes me. A neighbor gave me a red fancy leafed japanese maple for my wedding gift too. You know the small ones that are way expensive..!? liek $200 for a tree not even 2 feet high. haha. The kind that will et wider but nly reach maybe 5 feet after decades.. you know the kind! I have a special place for that and we always comment how special it is and how we'll alwasy remember the wedding because we have the tree planted. it is doign very well and growing and just gorgeous. these special plants mean so much to me too!

Yes...you all have good and generous loving hearts...I'm a lucky old lady..I have browsed around Houzz many times, I've seen groups of friendships formed..but I've not seen such a large group of truely wonderful people ad what's in the Laundry Room. Only one person missing that's on my mind every single day..every day..maybe its my email or hers but we've lost contact and its a feeling worse than losing mywasher and tthat's for sure.....JEAN if your out there reading this.... txt my phone..I miss all of our long talks.

I do have name tags on almost all of my hostas,but I have many duplicates,that I don't label. I have 187 varieties,but I know them all by heart,so even if the labels were missing,I'd still know what they were,mostly by where they are planted. I also have them in a record,and what garden they are planted in. I do have a couple NOID's that I bought as a named hosta,only to have them come up again not looking at all like what they are supposed to be. These were bagged hostas.( That Dutch are at it again)! I do the same thing. I have the best intentions, and then something happens. Most of mine are labeled, but there are a few that I do not know. I have had a few that were miss marked. The best one was a Moonlight. I knew it wasn't Moonlight, but it was so interesting that I bought it anyway. By the end of the summer, I was pretty sure it was Jewel of the Nile. When it unfurled this spring, there was no doubt. It is a pretty JON. I also have some yellow with green edges and unkown greens that I will probably never know. Oh well, life goes on.

Looks like 'Frances Williams' but more vigorous?

Consider 'Olive Bailey Langdon' or 'El Capitan'.

I feel your frustration Linda. I bought a dozen plants last year at the local hosta society's tailgate auction, and finally planted them in a new bed at the end of the season. Didn't have time to prepare the "good" labels before winter set in, so I stuck the little plastic markers deeply into the ground. All of those plants are coming up now and looking fabulous. Unfortunately, the markers all popped out of the ground and blew away thankfully I remembered most of them, but there was one I totally drew a blank when I saw it. Beautiful streaker! I started cleaning up the area, and thought I'd rummage through a pile of huge leaves. Well there it was, the errant tag, and the plant is 'Wahoo'. That'll teach me a lesson not to have spent the 20 minutes to update my maps to include these plants! Maps are this hosta fanatic's best friend. LOL.

maps.. databases.. or a digital pic... labeled in your photo editor ...

i cant recall where i moved my gunthers prize too ... i just hope it isnt that crown rooted dead thing ....

Oh my Gosh! I can't believe anyone is so dumb as to not label or at least write down on their garden map what they plant in the fall. I know the old - I'll remember that saying to oneself to avoid keeping records!

HA! That is just what I did and I have one new corner of my hosta bed that is full of lovely hostas that I can only identify about 1/3 of them. The others I do not even remember planting! And I really, really do not know what some of them are!

Just as soon as all my unknowns from last year that weren't identified by my HF friends unfurl they will be photographed again and hopefully be 'knowns' again.

Yes I took pictures, black and white, and yes I have a master list of all hosta purchased and the year gotten so I'm doing better!!! LOL

I'm only replacing hostas in pots that died over the winter, or so I told myself. I need to take care of what I've got before adding more, or so I told myself. LOL

We'll see what developes.
