This year I have seen more hummingbirds in my yard than in other years. Although I have 4 feeders filled at the same time, the hummers guard their favorite and chase each other back and forth, trying to keep each other away from it. They are so brave and chase all of the other birds throughout the yard too! I thought that I was actually seeing the little hummers "burp" after they feed because it looked like a small thread sticking out from their beaks for a second. Then, today I could see from closer that it was a thin red tongue extending out from its beak for a final "slurp"! What a "hoot" to see! Now, my question is: I always thought that they sucked in the nectar. But, after seeing this - do they actually "slurp" it up with their tongue? That tongue must be SUPER long!
