Hummingbird Garden

Scared hummer in greenhouse

A humming bird flew into my friend's small greenhouse (all glass). It kept flying all around the top frantically but wouldn't dive down to come out the door. I went home and got one of my window feeders and stuck it on the storm door which opens out and put the lock on to hold it out. She came right to it and drank lots, but then flew back in instead of out. Hopefully she has flown out by now. I'm going back today and move the feeder further from the door if she is still there, so I can shut the door when she is out. She needs to be heading south but I want to avoid a net if I can. We only have a few females passing thru now and temps are dropping quickly. Any other ideas to try? Thanks.

I keep my greenhouse open all summer because of the intense heat and humidity down here in south Texas. Last week I had a female RT get into my greenhouse and kept hitting her head on the roof. I hung a feeder right in the open doorway and she flew out and hasn't been back since.

There must be something really attracting her in the greenhouse to make her go back in. Something red maybe? Try to find out what it is and maybe move it temporarily.

Yes I too would think they are attracted to something red in the greenhouse. Several times this summer they have flown into my garage, just because of the red thing on the cord.

you might try animal repellent granules at the base of the tree the scent is very offensive to them if necessary you could also attach maybe a bird feeder made for the ground and put some in there too further up the tree YOU have a RIGHT to feel about your yard and birds etc any way you choose its NOT ur ignorance thats highlighted when someone ELSES attempts to shame or guilt you the granules and spray are sold by walmart

I keep one of my hummer feeders inside of a forsynthia that a robin always nests in. The robins and hummers haven't had a problem with each other. I do have a suet feeder, probably 50' away from both, and the hummer actually goes over to check the ruckus that occurs at the suet feeder. I don't think the hummer would be a threat to the robin, unlike the larger suet loving birds. I know you love your woodpeckers; is there any chance you can move the suet feeder?

I came to this forum in search of this very same topic. I have not fed hummers in the past, I was really just working on getting my gardens established. Last fall I had a hummer come through my yard and I didn't even have a feeder out (I remember seeing him at one of my perennials but I don't recall which one.) Anyway, this year I've added more hummer-friendly flowers even though none are blooming right now I did set my feeder out 3 days ago just in case. My neighbor told me she had a Hummer at her feeder last week so I'm guessing I might've missed my window. I've noticed that the robins (most numerous bird in my yard) are constantly flying around the HB feeder and landing on the shepards hook that the feeder is on. The feeder is Very close to a small lilac shrub (didn't bloom this year - too new I think) and a very mature cherry tree. All the birds in my yard LOVE the cherry tree. I haven't even had to set out a bird feeder this year, I just toss stale bread out once every few weeks and they have a field day between that, the cherries and the worms/grubs/insects in my yard. I just wonder if it's too much bird activity for hummers?

Erik Wasps can be a pain thats for sure . But it shouldnt be that big of problem. I have had wasps here competing with hummers for the sugar water. It will help to have multiple feeders and maybe one feeder that is saucer style that wont lure the wasps as bad. Also you can try moving your feeders around in your yard as wasps are not very smart in refinding a feeder. Also you can reduce the strength of the sugar water or possibly leave a bowl of high sugar water away from the feeders.

Bdriver - Sounds like you're doing the right thing. Hope it works this time.
We had to take the red thing off of our garage door cord also. Wish they wouldn't put them there in the first place. Steve - If you haven't already, cut it off and put something else on the end.

It worked. She spent the night and half the next day. Drinking and resting. She had looked frantic and exhausted. Seeing the feeder seemed to comfort her right away. She left the next day. Thanks for the advice about something red. I never thought of that. I'll tell my friend who has the greenhouse.

I used to get hummers in my house all the time when we had the feeder too close to the deck door. THey would fly up into our second story famil room window and try to get out. I would have to get the ladder and wait for them to sit, exhausted, on the window sill. I would put a dish towel over them and take them outside. THey get almost paralyzed when they are tired/scared. I would take them out side, hold them in my hand and they would wake up and fly away. I haven't had any in a while, but I don't miss the drama.
