A hosta 'Minuteman' given to me by a neighbor today

She said she got it a month or so ago from Home Depot because she admires my Albomarginata so much but she didn't realize it needed so much shade and she is in full sun in the front where all her plants are so she gave me her plant today. It has 3 eyes but it HUGE like my Albomarginata... Thinking it may be a big one, too!?

I also resoiled my Albomarginata today... A huge chore... It weighs like 40lbs, the plant alone! Last I was able to count, it had 21 eyes this season, there are more than that but I couldn't count them all! It will be OK this season but next it will need a bigger pot for sure as this one is full and can take no more! LOL!! But, it's happy and healthy and here's the arrangement on it's part with the Mama Mia and Minuteman now...

Where'd my kitten basket statue go?...The only place it could!

Also, I know for sure my Fire Island is going to flower this season... Here's proof!

My other neighbor had me help her dig her hosta up out of the ground and pot it today. She asked me what potting soil I use so I let her borrow some of mine... Miracle Grow's Moisture Control. She said she is going to copy me in every way possible! I was so flattered!!

Thank you I am so proud of all of them! Especially the ones that I have had awhile... I was worried about the "babies" I got as starters (TC) I got last year... I wondered if they were growing at the right rate. They are. So they are perfectly happy and healthy and still growing- which I am told through research (like last year) will happen all season long. This makes me happy! I look forward to next year when they are twice as large as they are now. I like the new "babies" I have gotten... I'm proud of them, too, even the ones I had given to me!

Of course, I have my Holy Mole in a container, but I know you have PLANS for that boy to grace the bed between house and fence. Halcyon is a lovely thing in a container. I'd also consider ONE of the Royal Standards in a pot. Even though it is green as can be, it is pretty. And definitely Satisfaction works beautifully in a pot. Mine shot up last spring very early, and again this year was one of the first to fill out the pot and look good. It bloomed early last year as well, but everything was early last year. My S&S is potted, but oh mercy, I see a whiskey barrel in that hosta's future. And it will be located somewhere that needs NO MOVING. It is in a fairly large square pot now, and it is piling new leaves all over itself. Is this what is meant by LEAPING? I went outside with my smarty phone to take photos of the pots and wound up taking more than pots. I'll be browsing the pot source given by Paula. The cheap pots from WalMart with saucers built onto the bottom are not meant for hosta. I drilled holes in all the saucers to improve drainage. They still don't work quite right. But Lowes now sells a smooth sided nursery pot with holes on the sides that works great too. Very sturdy. But black only.

The person that gave them to me works at the same garden nursery as I do and she even brought in her tag from the pot that the plant came in. But I am thinking that maybe after all these years she has her tags mixed up. I have it planted now and it is looking better. I will post another photo of it tonight after work. Stephanie

Thanks Steve, Judy, Ken, Melissa, Phil & Manyhosta! You saved me a lot of grief by telling me about Fire 'n Ice". No, I hate wasting my hard earned money on plants that "look" great but then turn out to be divas....I had just returned a gorgeous blue hydrangea to that same nursery that looked awesome in the pot (and the acid-type food needed to keep it blooming blue) because I read a few hours later on the Hydrangea forum that this cultivar was more hype than anything else in most people's experience. I went back today and bought a Minuteman nicely grown in a big pot. I doubt I'll become a huge hosta buyer, as I only have so much part-shade where I live. Most of our gardens are in full sun in the back yard. We used to have 65 rose bushes...now we're down to like 32 and I am going to start giving some away....just don't have the energy to deal with them the way we did 10 years ago! We also have a lot of different kinds of lilies, iris, daylilies and other perennials. I DID take another look at Patriot, Paul's Glory, Francee (?), Halcyon, Blue Mouse Ears, Aureomarginata, Stained Glass and a few others. I WANTED to like Stained Glass (because I love stained glass, and I paint in watercolor too, which reminds me of stained glass) but I just couldn't figure out what the big deal was with it? I didn't like the wrinkled or wavy look to some of the leaves...kind of looked like they were "buckling" or something wrong with them....but both pots had that look. Just looked kind of "wrong!" Do all the Stained Glass hostas have that kinda wavy look? Just turned me off for some reason. As far as solid hostas, with the limited part-shade space I have, I will use other solid plants (heucheras, etc.)to kinda mix it up. Maybe in the future I'll see a solid that bowls me over (in person!) Thanks again!! You're the best!! :0) Phyl

I've made room for 2 more at most last night too before I hung it up... So I can have room for my 2 from Hilltop Farm which I plan to visit on Saturday!

Jan, to be fair, I've only gotten 2 from neighbors. The Mama Mia, I passed her everyday and felt so bad for her so I offered to buy her from other neighbors that have sense moved. They just gave her to me! Win! And she was in awful shape and pitiful looking. But I did all I could for her and it worked!

This one (the Minuteman) is in great shape still. She has a good sun garden and didn't want to kill him. He wasn't unwanted, he is wanted very much as she has hosta envy (of my hostas). To be fair, I gave her my flowers as I was afraid people would run over them. She beamed and said she had the perfect spot for them. Win again!!

I need my hosta display now I thinks!!! It's getting hard to get onto my patio!

Well, I am hoping my hosta display will be finished in a week or 2. So I won't have to worry about blocking the door much longer. I moved the kitten basket statue under my Albomarginata, it looks cute there, like the kitties are hiding so I will probably keep it like that even on the display stage. I can get by OK and get out OK still... LOL! It just takes some careful side stepping is all! :P

Brandy, while what you were given is a nice looking plant, I have my doubts about its reported identity. 'Minuteman' should have a much wider margin than what this one shows. Just for fun, go check the pictures on the HL.... Given where the plant was purchased it is not surprising it is misidentified. Do I have any thoughts on it's real identity? I'd say it's likely 'Fortunei Albomarginata'.

Thanks Pieter but I don't think it's an Fortunei Albomarginata either... That one looks very similar to my Undulata Albomarginata except the leaves aren't as "wavy" as it... Plus, the leaves on the labeled Minuteman are more heart shaped than shield shaped. IDK??? It might be several of those out there right now that are just NOID... It actually doesn't say Minuteman on the tag it came with, she taped what was on the nursery planter with the scan barcode. That says Minuteman.

Hopefully you can see what I mean by the fact that it's leaves don't look shield like to me compared to my undulata albomarginata.

Brandy, 'Fortunei Albomarginata' and 'Francee' are rather similar looking, just use the comparetor I have linked. Both are what is called 'fortunei types' in that they are generally the same shape and size, and the leaf-backs are glaucous. 'Francee' is the parent to both 'Patriot' and 'Minuteman', and the latter two are hard to distinguish from a distance. Whichever it is, it's a fine looking specimen, but keep a look on it for the next couple of years for possible signs of HVX.
