I look at my pitiful plants which are dwarfed in pots, and think Pfffffhhhh, no problem ..... ....and then Don posts that ginormous Key West, which is fantastic and it dwarfs Miz Olga! I cannot WAIT for something in my garden to look like that. Hosta are just about too exciting for me ole heart. I've taken steps to give Empress Wu room, and S&S as well. I had no idea about Key West though. It looks innocent enough in its normal nursery pot. Olga sure can breed giant hosta!

are you finding it hard.. to water... on your little outhouse/hosta hill ... later in the season.. it will be imperative.. to insure.. that the water stays long enough.. to soak in thru the whole root mass ... prior to running off .. that might get really hard in the high heat of the summer when the soil has the potential to be water repellant until the water can break surface tension ... brilliant work ... playing in the dirt eh ???? ken

Thanks everyone! Keswick- Thanks for the suggestions. I do have sedum Autumn Joy. Anemones would be great and fall blooming irises too. I will have to look for some of those. Donna, Daylilies have come along way in just a few years. There are some fantastic ones out there and they are soooo expensive! I will be waiting a few years for the price to come down and I am sure by then there will be even more beautiful ones. Popmama- my hydrangea is only about a foot tall but at least it is blooming! There is a large pot in the garden that has some easy wave petunias and a dragon wing begonia in it. I grew the petunias from seed and they are doing very well. I like to put pots in the garden to create some height. Dragonwings are my favorite plant to put in pots because just one plant fills up a large pots and looks great until frost. miles if you can see any of the stem on a tree peony it is not planted too deep. It may be that if you planted it only last year the stems are not developed enough to have bloom buds. They are not like some herbaceous and need to be planted two inches or less under the soil a minimum of four but even better most of the stem. Peonies of all types need time to adjust to where they are planted. Even though tree peonies can have blooms the first year that is very very unusual. I have about 25+- of them. The bloom bud stems were developed within the small almost invisible bud on the side of the stem several years ago. In my garden I start seeing next years bloom buds start forming toward the end of June and early July. If your tree peony did not have secondary stems at that time last year it is very unlikely that you would have had any blooms this year. Peonies of all type bloom on their own schedule and moving them around on your whim increases that schedule. In my area KCMO if I would plant tree peonies in open sun rather than the various shaded spots I would have one day of bloom then petals on the ground the next when our temps go from 50 to 90F in a days time.
