Inheritance of Disease Resistance in Tomatoes

I love flavor and variety I find in various heirloom tomatoes. Unfortunately, some of them do not have the disease resistance of some of the hybrids. I would assume that disease resistance is an inheritable trait or traits. Has anyone tried crossing heirloom tomatoes with modern disease resistant F1s and then selecting for disease resistance and heirloom color and/or flavor in succeeding generations?

All I need is the land and I would try . So I guess It is up to you . "Pink brandywine" has some resistance to potatoe blight and it is a heirloom. Try "Floramerica tomatoes" they have 17 Resistances .

Vinson Watts Tomato: Offered for the first time five years ago, this tomato has proven to be quite popular with many people. Prior to his death in March, 2008, Vinson Watts had improved his namesake tomato for fifty-two summers. The original seed was from Lee County, Virginia and given to him by his work supervisor, Wilson Evans, at Berea College in 1956. Those interested in the story of his tomato can look it up on the internet since several articles in newspapers and magazines have been written about Watts and his tomato. The tomato is a large pink tomato flavored with an excellent balance of sugars and acids. It is the most disease resistant tomato I know of-the result of 52 summers of careful selection for flavor, texture, and disease resistance.

Does the use of hybrid stocks of varieties with VFN resistence impart any resistence (other than root nemartode) onto the grafted plant? The internet sites I have checked talk about the improved vigor of grafted plants but make no specific mention of this question. My impression is that the qualities of the rootstock are not transmitted to the grafted part but I would be interested in any scientific studies (not simple impressions) to confirm that.

I'm looking for disease resistant OP tomatoes I have a terrible time with anthranose, early blight and late blight. Do any of you have any suggestions. **** First, there is no such thing as resistance when it comes to tomatoes, it's tolerance, which is not the same as resistance. (smile) Early Blight is due to A. solani and Late Blight is due to P. infestans. If you have P. infestans then there are no OP's I can think of that give resistance, let alone tolerance, and that includes the variety Legend, which was bred for Late Blight tolerance but it hasn't turned out that way when grown by most folks. And Late Blight is usually lethal within a couple of weeks leaving a stinling mess of black rotten tissue. Early Blight and Late Blight can both appear either early or late in the season/ And anthracnose is never a problem for me until late in the season when the nights start turning cooler and I don't know of any OP's that are tolerant to anthracnose. Anthracnose is a very common fungus that's airborne almost everywhere. So what can one do about the major FUNGAL tomato diseases, which are the foliage diseases, such as Early Blight and Septoria Leaf Spot? There are a couple of Early Blight tolerant varieties out there but they aren't very tolerant and without checking I think both are hybrids. it just means that a large commercial farmer can spray maybe every 6-7 days rather than every 4-5 days which is a huge savings for the commercial farmer. One can use an excellent anti-fungal spray which works best as a preventative rather than a cure. Yes, I could name one, but will wait to see what others have to say as well. The bacterial foliage pathogens Bacterial Speck and Bacterial Spot have no good treatments, at least for the home gardener. Carolyn

It's listed in the 2010 SSE YEarbook and I'll just copy the listing information here. (1-2 inch round stew tomatoes and plenty of them. Easilt filled a grocery bag per picking off two plants. Plants proved to be the most "bullet-proof" of over 100 varieties observed and had every leaf that they ever had from the beginning when frost finally knocked them down. Not a single leaf of Late Blight or leaf spot when everything else was dying. Never saw that in a non-hybrid before. Received in a round robin trade.) So M, the lister, whom I know, is referring to primarily foliage diseases. And Earl, whose 44th paralell website that's been mentioned here also lists it in his inventory of seeds. No other mention of it at Tania's site or Ventmarin, so I have no info of the history of the variety or anything else, other than to say that for a request price SSE members could get it from M and I don't know if it will be listed in the 2011 Yearbook b'c that hasn't come yet and I don't do the online SSE Yearbook b'c I don't want to, which is only accessible to SSE members. Carolyn, just noting that only varieties in the current SSE YEarbook are available to SSE members, not past Yearbooks and the 2011 should be here in a week or so, but I imagine M will be relisting it with that kind of praise as to tolerance to many foliage diseases, although I don't know if he's referring to both the common fungal as well as the common bacterial ones. So not tolerance against any soilborne diseases such as Fusarium, Verticillium, Rootknot nematodes, etc.

I am searching for sources of seeds available to the home gardener which are resistant to the Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus. I have encountered the initials TT as a source, but the keys never seem to say which seed company this is.
Do you know what it stands for? Also, if any of you have successfully grown TYLCV resistant tomatoes, I would love to have your input as to what varieties you like best. Thanks, Cheryl in Hawaii
