New here - should I continue filling the feeder?

Hi. I tried attracting hummers to my garden this year (late in the season,July).

I got a hummingbird feeder and I fill it with the nectar water (packet that you add water to) and started planting plants to attract them.

I have not seen any hummers yet, and I'm wondering should I go out and buy more of the nectar stuff? Or just call it quits for the season and start again next year?

Hi Maureen and welcome to the wonderful world of hummerz!

First of all throw away the commercial nectar mix and don't waste your money on that stuff. It is much safer to use just plain old pure cane table sugar and water. Here is the recipe: add 1/4 cup of sugar (no color added please) to 1 cup of previously boiled water. Stir well to completely dissolve the sugar. Refrigerate the mix until it is cool then pour it into clean feeders. In hot weather replace nectar and clean feeders every 2-3 days to prevent mold and mildew from growing. If nectar looks cloudy it is fermenting so dump it immediately and clean and refill feeder with fresh nectar. Don't use any other additives in the mix as this is as close to natural nectar as you can get. For people who are just starting out and don't see any hummers only pour enough nectar into the feeder so that you can see it and refrigerate the rest to use when you change the nectar. It may take a while before you start seeing any hummers in your area and you may or may not see any now until next year as they are into the southward migration but I suggest keeping at least one feeder up and fresh in case some migrators come your way. THis morning my yard was buzzing with migrators. There are lots of rubythroats in Canada and they will be heading south and looking for food sources.

I want to add that not only is the sugar/water solution more safe, but hummingbirds actually prefer the taste of the homemade. I could not get them to drink the store nectar for anything!

Glenda, lots of work, but I too love older homes. This one is really special to us and yes it did call out to us. We can't take credit for much of the renovation as the PO did much of the interior work. However, we picked up where he left off when he moved to another old house (in much better repair). When we purchased it there was not one perennial flower in the yard! Tammy, we have 4 "squeaking" wood screen doors! :-) One on each of the porches on the house. I am lucky in that both DH and I are lovers of old homes. natal, doubt there is anything in store for the pink "blob". Maybe, sometime down the road, we may try to remove it but it will be a very tedious job. We did think of painting just the brick on that side of the house as it is not visible from the road, but decided we did not want to do that. Guess we just consider it part of the character of the old house. My only concern with the new color scheme is that it won't blend as nicely with the garden room colors of pink,blue,red and whites. The new colors are an olive green, yellowish gold and rust, historical colors. With the green being the primary color. oceanna, thank you. miracle? nope, just hard work, if we can do it so can others. I am playing around with the idea of blogging, but not sure if I want to commit to the time involved with doing that, or if anyone would want to read it. I have seen many of your "eye candy" posts and have thoroughly enjoyed them. You are a very caring person to spend the amount of time it must take to share all those beautiful pictures! gramma jan, yes, so far it does look like it is unanimous. That surprises me as I thought for sure some would say it was done, and it was time for me to move on. If I would remove it, it would not be until next year. I will finish the 2009 page for this year. Others with opinions? Any "nay" sayers?

The last couple years I had Bluebirds nesting in snags in the back yard (both snags have since fallen over). I cut way down on the food in the feeders, which I usually do anyway in the summer, because I didn't want to attract House Sparrows. Would put out a little BOSS, but only put out the home-made suet nuggets if the Bluebirds wanted some. This Spring, I had a pair of Baltimore Orioles nesting in a large Pin Oak right above the feeders. Did the same thing, cut down on the food in the feeders, because the Orioles were very territorial about the tree. They were especially aggressive towards Blue Jays, Grackles, and Crows so I stopped throwing any tidbits on the ground (like old corn chips, which the Jays and Crows like). So I would favor the security of the nesting birds. During the summer and fall, there are normally abundant natural sources of food, so feeders are not critical. Birds eat a lot of insects and feed their young insects, so they are unlikely to starve if you aren't feeding them.

It's hard to tell, but this does seem to be the wrong shade of aqua. But before you abandon aqua or your white sheer drapes, my question is -- what style do you want for this room? What is your vision? Are you happy with the elements you already have, or do you want a drastic change? Do you want a beachy, clean, look? or do you want a more traditional style? Are you unsure? If you want to change your style, then I wouldn't make these decisions based solely on trying to work with things you already have (drapes, furniture, etc). Your current decor and paitn color are all nice, but if you're no longer 'feeling' them, trust your gut and move in another direction, and don't let your old things hold you back. Your sofas are neutral, and with their rectangular lines they really could go either way (traditional with a slight tropical touch or a more current beachy look). If you want to keep the style and just freshen it up, though, by all means choose a color that works with the things you already have (and for that i think the grasscloth paint color or a lighter celery would be best). It's just a question of what look you want. Also, if you love the idea of aqua and want a more tropical/beachy look overall, would you be open to bringing the aqua in as an accent color rather than the primary paint color? I.e. in throw pillows & other accessories? And maybe you could save up for curtains that have a little bit of an aqua accent, whether it's a pattern or a neutral/off-white curtain with an aqua border/stripe? That would look nice with a neutral wall color or the grasscloth wall covering/ paper that was posted earlier in the thread. If you do want to stick with an aqua wall color, here's an aqua room that i saw on a blog today that had a nice color. I don't know if this blue is too subdued to complement your coral, but I think this is a picture of benjamin moore bali (picture is from a redo posted on thisyounghouse.com).

Why are you trying to make it look like a 'Before' picture? I just don't get distressed (or shabby chic) furniture. It always looks so fake. For instance--there is paint missing from the bottom of grooves on that dresser. Normal wear always occurs at the outermost points that are most exposed to rubbing, not the deeper parts that are protected. The rounded column detail on the corner is pristine, yet the groove where it meets the body is missing paint. How could that happen in real life? (it doesn't) The white's not a great color, so I'd spend some time painting it a better color or stripping it down to the original wood if that white isn't a factory finish.

I was wondering if it's bad to keep a feeder up over the winter season.
Someone told me that the hummers won't leave and go South if we keep feeders out. It mixes them up.
Is this true?

In your area, like mine..no....leave the feeder up... The advice (from our local bird expert) is keep them up. Reason..hummers eat insects, and in any southern climate, as you well know, there are insects year round..yes, a freeze may kill the mosquitos, but they come back...example, I'm in coastal SC, and as far north as the outer banks of NC, the hummers have wintered there as long as the residents can remember, and I think the same could be said for Texas...as you're in zone 8.

Be faithful, and keep your feeder up...as if nothing else, you may feed a wanderer who needs a meal...example, I had a hummer visit my garden on 12/15 last year, that was our last day before the freeze, ad I'm on the coast..I saw my first returner in mid March...buzzing at my window..and the nights were still quite cool!.my bird man lives 20 miles inland, and says he has them all year....

Yes, may be a maintenace thing to change the nectar, but much less a need in winter than summer, just make in large batches and store in fridge.

Keeping a feeder up year round has no baring on when the hummers migrate. Hummers migrate south as the days get shorter in the fall so it is the daylight (for lack of the technical term or lack of daylight which triggers their migration. Even in the northern states there are hummers who become to old, ill or weakened for some reason that are unable to migrate and the nectar they are able to get from feeders will help them to survive.

I still have a garden full of nectar rich flowers but my hummers are gone. If a food source would keep them around I would still have plenty right up to freezing.
