Flowers on a tough one...

H. nummulariodes has been a tough one for me. I got cuttings a couple of years ago and lost them. Then I got another set of cuttings in March of this year and I didn't think they would ever root, but they finally seemed to be "grabbing hold" about mid-summer. I noticed it was forming peduncles a few weeks ago. I've seen photos of nummulariodes flowers before and I always thought, "Oh, they look like carnosa..." But what no one has mentioned is that they're tiny little replicas of carnosa! You know how you can't tell size in a photo - the whole flower cluster is only about 3/4" across!

Yes, they are tiny. Each bloom is only about the size of a pencil eraser. Congrats on getting yours to bloom. Don't you think the smell is kind of weird? sorry about the poor picture quality.

Denise I have had this Hoya for almost two years and the cuttings have maybe tripled in size in that time, not a fast grower for me. I think I have a few peduncles forming now but not very many. Do you allow your plant to dry out some before watering again? My plant seems to dislike staying moist for too long.

Thanks for the suggestions, Carol & Rhizo. 'Twas an oversight not to mention there are 4 petals (which can only be seen 2-3" from my naked eyes - neither side of the bifocals are enough for something this small!) Sorry, and wish I knew more plant anatomy words to describe this little fella better. Should I ask 'honey' to take a pic with a real camera? My phone's not very good at close-ups.

Couldnt agree more, plantsplus. I saw no malice in aroid's reply, but I think you've hit the nail on the head when you say that the OP simply wants someone to 'tell you what you want to hear'. My concern is that the nursery industry isnt entirely populated by people of your ilk - many *will* tell the customer what they want to hear, hence furphys like 'all natives are waterwise' and ' is completely unkillable' whilst directing the gullible victim toward their next acquisition. Again, I'm generalising : I've met quite a few really good nurserypeople who have steered me away from a given plant choice because said plant just doesnt do well in my area, but we have to be realistic : a business needs cash to survive, and that potential customer will just go down the road to the next guy if a suggestion isnt forthcoming. In the interests of appearing 'happy', here are a few proven performers that do well in tropical gardens in dry times (once *established* ..): Bougainvillea Frangipani Yucca Agave Dracaena Strelitzia Bromeliad Other suggestions would include Australian plants noted for their abaility to do well in our 'dry rainforest' enclaves: Flindersia Australis Harpullia Pendula Alphitonia spp. Melia azedarach Pandorea Pandorana and the list goes on. So much of it is microclimate and ongoing care : even the toughest species will find it hard going if exposed to 12 hours of sun and the prevailing winds. The old mantra is, as it always was: 1. Mulch, mulch and more mulch 2. Use soil-wetting agents (and water crystals if applicable) 3. Plenty of organic matter in the mulch layer 4. Periodically clear the mulch away from the plants stem to ensure that the water is penetrating 5. Drip irrigation beats most forms of overhead watering (I prefer the latter for my tree ferns and broms). Enjoy, Artie

I'm with you on that, Jeri! I call that color "fire engine red." For sentimental reasons, I grow a number of roses that my mother, aunt and grandparents grew. At my last garden, I trained Blaze on the fence because my grandfather grew it. The hot, yellow-red toned blooms always pestered me. My grandfather and mother both grew Tropicana, but I still haven't been able to bring myself to grow its neon coral self. The only colors that are more jarring to my eyes are bright bicolors like neon coral AND fire engine red! I appreciate that others on the forum have found ways to successfully incorporate and enjoy bright specimens in their gardens while I surround myself with pink, purple and blue-red roses! I don't believe there are any colors that Tom Carruth hasn't worked with. Cerise to aubergine. Carol

Thanks - today I need to go back to that same bed and deal with the ground cover roses - Arctic Sunrise and one which I can't remember the name of - it looks exactly like Nozomi, except its blooms are darker pink than most pics of N. AS is white, and they both make teenie tiny blooms. Look great together. They cover all of the rest of that about 6 ft by 9 ft bed, and form a solid mass of roses about 12 inches high which covers it completely. I have to prune a sort of path through the middle of it, from the water meter to the sidewalk. Otherwise, the plumbers will just dig right through the roses. Of course, at this point I have no idea where the roses are rooted (they were planted about 20 years ago, are thriving, and putting out 6 foot canes along the ground - they also tip root, so who knows?). I have decided to just go ahead and start clipping - no matter what I do, they will grow back rapidly - I think LWP is setting them an example. P-pal - I didn't really notice a fragrance. But I must have a not-so-sensitive nose because I don't detect scent on a lot of the small ones. Although I must say that my australis ssp. tenuipes is blooming up a storm right now and I smell that one from three rooms away!!

Mike, I think you're right. Because this is one I've had a lot of trouble with, I put it in a spot where I don't look at it often and thus it doesn't get watered quite as frequently as others. So I think it does prefer to dry out. That's what it takes, sometimes, with those types for me. Frustration turns into ignoring, which works for the ones that prefer to be dry...

Denise, congrats on your nummularioides!

I really like their fragrance, I think it's very sweet and you can smell it from around a yard if you have several peducles in bloom. At least that was what happened to my nummularioides when it bloomed before.

BTW, did you see the blooms on my H. carnosa ssp. carnosa? You said you've got one of these plants but had never seen the blooms, so I just wonder.

I did see the photo when you posted it, but I went back and found it and apparently saw it before all the posts regarding the ID. I received mine from Carol before she had a firm ID on it. Then I later saw it on her site and she'd changed it to carnosa ssp. carnosa. And now I see she has it listed as carnosa var. carnosa. But the leaves look exactly like yours, so I guess I wonder if "var." vs. "ssp" makes the difference in the flowers. I guess I'll have to wait and see what my flowers look like!

Denise, congrats!!! I am happy you finally got some flowers.
Remember my huge beautiful numm? it's been going down hill since the watwer damage, it really hurts me to look at my plant. I think lots water is an enemy to nummulariods for sure.
I should kick myself for not bringing inside but no need to cry over spilled milk.

I've had exactly the opposite experience...mine seems to love water. I water it almost daily and it blooms very well
