Hosta Erromena That Ate Chicago

Okay, it's not really the erromena that ate Chicago Â though two of its little brothers are crowding 'Sweet Home Chicago' something fierce in that raised bed to your right.

But it did smother 'On Stage' in the spring of 2006. DH dug it out and we drove it 150 miles to his brother's house last weekend.

Why am I sure this is erromena, and not ventricosa or lancifolia? Because I myself watched the undulata it came from revert to solid green, and separated the eyes. Erromena seems to have less leaf substance than ventricosa, too. Although the "holding pens" you see in this photo are bright shade, I also have a couple out front in part sun that are fat and happy and don't fry yellow. See that chaise? Why is there no cushion? Because when I'm back there, there's never time to lie around! Wheelbarrows, wheelbarrows, as far as the eye can see!

Now I know that the two hosta that were here when I bought the place have names. I usually referred to them as the generic green and the generic green and white. Useful for filling space until better hosta can be purchased.

I just can't deliberately kill any hosta and there are times when I wish I could!

My oldest hosta bed is suffering from age, fairy ring, and frost damage so a few of the plants look really bad and I still can't just rip them out. Half of my 12 year old Sum and Substance is damaged and has just a few inches of growth while the other part is leafing out beautifully. Fourteen year in the ground Plantinega is near death. I feel your pain.

Such is the life of a hoster lover!

I got 3 inches of the white stuff. Not to bad. I do not know for sure where it is going to come up at. That is why I am waiting for it to show its face so I can dig it up and put it in a new bed that I am doing. Plus I got about 10 pots to my Aunt last year and then she decides to move back to Florida this spring and I am going to dig hers up and bring over to my house. All she told me it was back by where her fence and swing were. So will have to wait on that too. Stephanie Kay

esther_opal, Yes, I want to cover the area completely, If you have advice about that, I am glad to learn. One question--do they grow only so far and then stop. lol, I guess that is obvious or the whole world would be covered with hosta. Is it necessary to divide then, if one allows space for it to reach a mature size and how does one know for sure what that size is? I just read that the tetraploids have the more substantial leaves (to my liking, cuz of slugs, but are slower growers. Is that always the case? Thanks for the responses. I have added them to my list of wants. I hope for more help and suggestions. jan

I got a Spartacus last year too! Thanks to Don! Sagae. Nice big leaves. I just need more of them! Seducer. Doing pretty well so far. I don't have the thin white line between the margin and the center. I guess it needs more sun. Squash Casserole. Stained Glass. I was shocked today when I had a peek at my potted hostas. The first one I looked at was Stained Glass and it had an eye emerging! It's way too early. I don't see it on Don Rawson's Early Emerging Hostas list. Here is my Striptease emerging. It has a sport which was also there the previous year. That's kind of cool! Striptease leafed out. But I am really waiting to see it look like this:

Thank you for the comments, ladies. Yeah, I had to study at the (cyber)feet of the master, Ken, to get harsh enough to snap out the reverting eyes in my undulatas. This is the first year I've really done that, instead of rescuing them, and DH was amazed.

It's weird. I have a small fortune in hostas hidden behind the house (okay, a very small fortune), but even the few neighbors privileged to see my pet beauties still prefer the thick border of undulata out front. It's a mystery...

I am grateful to those undulatas, because they are what got me hooked. A small thick patch of eyes about 2' across, maybe from a single plant left ten years earlier by a lady who died, divided up 2000 soon became a fine fluffy border 65' long along the north & east faces of the house. (We bought from her widower, a man not into gardening.)

I'll get a photo and post it in a new thread when it's light out.
