Which are you fastest growing hosta? I have a fairly large area to fill and would like for it to fill in as quickly as possible to cover the soil.

In my location, some of my fastest growers are Gold Standard (M-L), Gold Edger(S-M) , Ginko Craig S-M, and Blue Cadet (M). Mary

Mary the most corrugated blue I can think of just now is Clear Fork River Valley. It has the round leaf too. BUT I did not think it was a giant. Looks rather M/L at most to me although mine is not mature. I think it would work very well in any garden setting. Potted or in the ground. Here is mine with this year's crop of seed pods. It is a great hosta.

Abba Dabba Do used to be the largest hosta in my yard, pushing 70 inches and 3 feet tall. Then it started declining until finally this year I dug it up and cut it into about eight pieces in an effort to find some good eyes. I gave three to my daughter, replanted a piece with about nine eyes in the same spot, planted another piece in a different spot and threw all the rest up on the hill, where they will probably somehow survive and I'll notice them years later. The one in the original spot is now about a foot tall but is a mature division of a very large hosta. Be interesting to see what happens.

Good to know. I've got my hosta in a large pot in full sun on my south facing deck and water it regularly. It's in regular potting soil, though, so not the most porous. It's doing fair -- nothing spectacular. Should I add some perlite? How would I do so if I don't want to take the plant out of this big ol' pot? Can I just add some to the top soil and kind of dig it in or will that not be enough? I was told to give it shade in the afternoon. Is that not necessary? Also, while I'm here -- one of the leaves has bent in half and broke, I guess from wind. Do I just leave it be or should I try to do something to keep it straight? Thanks!

Keana has already shown us a beautiful Gold Standard, above, but perhaps you won't mind another. The late-summer version (pic taken today) gives us that wonderful parchment look. The fastest growers for me have been Guacamole, So Sweet, Fortunei Hyacinthina and anything that springs from it: like Gold Standard, Striptease, Francee, Patriot, Minuteman etc. etc. The latter though tend to be late risers and among the first to die back in the fall....

The fastest growers are the the ones with the most sun and a lot of water.

esther_opal, Yes, I want to cover the area completely, If you have advice about that, I am glad to learn. One question--do they grow only so far and then stop. lol, I guess that is obvious or the whole world would be covered with hosta. Is it necessary to divide then, if one allows space for it to reach a mature size and how does one know for sure what that size is?

I just read that the tetraploids have the more substantial leaves (to my liking, cuz of slugs, but are slower growers. Is that always the case?

Thanks for the responses. I have added them to my list of wants. I hope for more help and suggestions.

Lancifolia, Golden Tiara, Lemon Lime, Undulata Erromena all are the fastest growers for me.
