When getting cuttings that have traveled a long distance (such as the DL cuttings), I soak them in warm/room temperature water with a few drops of Superthrive. I let them soak anywhere from a few hours to 24 hours, depending on how dehydrated they might be. I root the cuttings in the soil medium I use, and they usually stay in that same pot with the same soil until they need to be upsized. I first make a fresh slanted cut. I completely moisten the soil before putting at least one node in the medium. I then put the whole pot inside a ziplock baggie that has a bunch of holes poked in it for aeration, spray the cutting and inside of the bag with water mixed with VF-11, and close the bag. I then put them on a plastic tray and place the tray on a heating mat. I've done this with and without a heating mat, and I've had success either way...but I find that the heating mat helps a lot when rooting in the Fall or Winter. Then I just leave the cuttings in bright indirect light. I mist inside the baggie every couple of days. I take them out of the baggies and off the heating mat when I feel resistance with a slight tug. Just a note: multiflora is the one cutting I'll root in water, and it's pretty much fail-proof! Gabi

Science is not my best subject, so I'm not sure exactly why...but all I know is my Hummel Sunset Jades and some other varieties of Jades and Succulents gets the prettiest colors when our night temps gets around 55 degrees or below in conjunction with full sun during the day. I leave mine outside all year except when frost/freeze is in the forecast...and usually in 4-6 weeks I notice the nice colors return. My Jades/Succulents normally goes almost dormant when our temps reach around 80+ degrees...I usually don't see any growths at this time till around mid fall. At least that's my experience growing them in Florida...they just don't like the high humidity in the summer. I know they prefer dry conditions and I'm sure that's why they grow much better in the winter for me, much lower humidity. Probably why they grow so much better and carefree in California because of their abundant sun and drier climate.

Paula I think you may have matched the wrong photo up with the caption. Hoya subquintuplinervis does have thick, rigid and similarly veined leaves to my Hoya sp Sulawesi but it was originally collected in Thailand and my plant is from the large island of Sulawesi which is located off of the eastern shore of Kalamantan on the Island of Borneo and below the Philippine islands which apparently most heavily influence the flora of the Sulawesi. I included a map of South East Asia in case anyone wanted to take a look. It is interesting to look up the locations where many of the unidentified Hoya species were collected, Islands like Ambon, Palawan, Haraku and Molukken. Part of determining the proper name for a species lies in the area of it's origin. Some species have a very large range while others are endemic so even though many Hoyas look alike they may in all reality not be as closely related as they appear. Many of the smaller islands are obviously not included on the map but there are several of the ones I mentioned. Mike Here is a link that might be useful:

to grow tomatoes upside down its better to use 5 gallon buckets. You cut a small hole in the bottom and place a sheet of newspaper or a coffee filter over it. Fill the bucket with a good potting soil, shaking occasionally so the soil will settle. lay another sheet of newspaper or coffee filter on top of the soil. cut another small hole in the bucket lid. Put the lid on and turn the bucket over. cut a small hole in newspaper or coffee filter so you can plant the tomatoe. I plant them when they are pretty small as its easier to get them in. Water daily until it get a nice size then flip the bucket over and hang it up. Preferable to a heavy clothline pole or something strong enough to hold it. You can remove the lid and plant something in the top or you can leave the lid on. Water well until the water starts running out the bottom. No staking is needed and tomatoes never lay on the ground. I am doing this method this year. I'm doing two different buckets, hanging them on the old kind of clothline pole that's like a large T. I put chicken wire loosely up the main pole and am growing cucumbers up the pole. So far everything is doing good. Happy Gardening, Gemfire
