New Hoya cuttings and Hoya sp Irian Jaya #28

I could not resist getting a few more Hoyas because it was so sunny and warm here last week. The cold and gloomy weather has returned but my cuttings arrived today I am trying to figure out just what I have. The cuttings I got are Hoya sp. Palawan, Hoya sp. Irian Jaya #28, Hoya sp. Irian Jaya #70 and Hoya sp. sulawesii. I was able to find a photo of Hoya sp Palawan on the web, Hoya sp Sulawesii looks like Hoya citrina or a related species, Hoya sp Irian Jaya #70 is a tiny dainty vine with thin leaves is is most likely in my Hoyas of NE New Guinea book but Hoya sp Irian Jaya #28 is a mystery.

Hoya sp Irian Jaya #28, looks like a Dischidia sp because of the thick fleshy leaves and long internodes. The leaves are about 1" long, very stiff and rounded on both the front and back. Has anyone seen a Hoya that has these characteristics?

Mike, Very nice hoya cuttings. Can I ask where you ordered your hoyas from?

I have a few things coming from the states, I hope they come soon and customs do not take them.

Cindy the cuttings came from Paul Shirley in the Netherlands. I will take some photos of the group once Hoya sp. Irian Jaya #70 perks up a little, it's thin leaves got a bit dessicated during shipping. I also got Hoya coriacea from a Ebay seller in Thailand a little while ago. The cutting was nice and healthy with tons of roots but the roots did not survive and I had to take a cutting from the top to save it. I have satisfied my Hoya cravings for the time being, well at least until the spring rolls around.

Here is a link to some photos of Hoya sp Palawan, not quite what I was expecting as it was described as a species with a shrubby growth habit but hopefully I will like it more once it starts to grow.

I also got coloura and USDA 81079 GPS 10079.Not sure if coloura is obscura or not but some Swedish blogs feel that USDA 810079 GPS 10079 is.I have obscura and I think the leaves on all 3 look a bit different from each other.I will have to wait for flowers. Mike if do get any info from PS will you pass it a long. I like vampire stuff too, most ghost stories as well, especially real old ones. I read some Anne Rice, but I felt that she could never top The Vampire Lestat, and I really didn't read much of her stuff past that one. One of my favorite vampire stories is "Carmilla" - not really a short story, more like a novella, written by Sheridan LeFanu. The story centered around a female vampire and her female victim, which I think caused a bit of a scandal in it's time. The author died in 1873, so the story must have been written before Dracula. ...sorry all, vampires and hoyas do not mix....though actually some hoyas only have a strong scent AT NIGHT and might even be pollinated by moths and SMALL BATS...so maybe there IS a connection between vampires and hoyas.... Those little white hanging pots are great, though - only 5" and that isn't so much bigger than what you are using now...and they are great "trainers" for little plants that aren't ready for the "big" 6" baskets. I am all out of them, I have one left, I need to order some but I would like to try to find them in dark green.

I have both H. collina and IR 26 and find them quite different...Klea's looks like IR 26, G.G.'s looks like H. collina..which gets a bright red if grown in very bright light, but without the pronounced "splashing". I think Mike is right that they're closely related..but, they are also quite different from one another. Do not over-water these hoyas..their roots rot easily..use a very fast-draining mix and go easy on the watering...I water every 7 days. I hope this helps..at least someone! Fondly, Patrick

GG the plant came from Paul Shirley so I am just going to adjust the name like he has and the new label will read Dischidia sp Irian Jaya #28. I have a small cutting a friend recently gave me of this species as well and if you look at my Flickr photostream there are some photos of the strangely thick and inflated succulent leaves that my cutting first came with when I got it a couple of years ago. Not the best photo but you get the idea. The photo before this one in the set (click to get to Flickr) shows the long internodes this species can develop. Orchids used to be my thing and I was totally nuts for them, really nuts. I find them endlessly fascinating but many are difficult to bloom in the home because they requires high humidity. There are thousands you could grow and bloom in the home with no problem but the ones I really love, the genus Bulbophyllum and relatives like it humid. I have a Bulbophyllum bandischii in spike in my orchid case and that is a huge accomplishment because this is my second time growing this species. The first time I grew Bulbo. bandischii it became a huge beautiful plant but never bloomed, now the high humidity I can offer it has finally coaxed this super rare and downright amazing orchid into bloom. I used to have several hundred Bulbophyllum species but have thinned my collection down and now I grow a more varied group of orchids. I always say OK enough already but I am always looking.
Do you have a permit for Paul shirley or are you winging it like I am doing with my buys from the us.
I have a permit for Thailand but I never see anything form there on Ebay.
I also like bushy type hoyas and are trying to get a few. I already have odorata which is bushy but mines just a cutting.
Please show pictures.

Here are the photos, not the best quality but it is too gloomy to take photos in natural light so I had to use the flash. Cindy to answer your question I don't get any paperwork when I order from Mr. Shirley. I believe that when you are shipping cuttings and there is no soil involved the people at customs are much more lenient. I have ordered many times over the last several years and never had a problem. I do know of some other people in Canada that have lost cuttings because they were in the mail for so long but mine have always been fine.

Hoya sp Irian Jaya #28, possibly a Dischidia? Notice the scarred area at the nodes possibly from a past blooming? If anyone else has this species or recognizes it as either a Hoya or Dischidia I would like to know.

Hoya sp Irian Jaya #70, this looks like it could be either Hoya solaniflora or Hoya lamingtoniae aka Hoya sp PNG 4. Still a little dessicated but I am sure it will be fine.

Hoya sp Palawan 9057

Hoya sp Sulawesii, I think this looks like it could be Hoya citrina or a related species. The leaves are more rounded than Hoya macrophylla or polystachya, I really like this one.

Hoya coriacea is not looking so good but the leaves have started to firm up and I suspect that it has started to root. I think that I would have done better with an unrooted cutting because of the long time it takes to arrive in the mail from Thailand.

Mike nice hoyas you got.Your hoya sp sulawesii does look just like my citrina that i got from DL this spring. I also like this one.
Can you remember who the vendor from Thailand on EBay was.

Hi Mike, nice cuttings!!! I don't recognize Hoya sp Irian Jaya #28 but it looks like planted upside down to me.

Cindy the Hoya coraicea came from Aleyatcha on Ebay.

The cutting does look upside down in the photo but I am pretty sure it is the right way around. With some help from the owner of Dischidia.com I was able to possibly ID the plant as a form of Dischidia bengalensis which is a pendant growing species so that explains the direction the leaves were oriented on the stem. If the cutting does not root soon I will try it the other way around.

Mike the one you say looks like H coriacea looks A LOT
like my H subquintuplinervis. I can't remember how to post

I do not have H. Coriacea but I do have H subquintuplinervis and to me the picture above and my hoya labeled subquintuplinervis do not look the same at all. Here's a pic.

Paula I think you may have matched the wrong photo up with the caption. Hoya subquintuplinervis does have thick, rigid and similarly veined leaves to my Hoya sp Sulawesi but it was originally collected in Thailand and my plant is from the large island of Sulawesi which is located off of the eastern shore of Kalamantan on the Island of Borneo and below the Philippine islands which apparently most heavily influence the flora of the Sulawesi.

I included a map of South East Asia in case anyone wanted to take a look. It is interesting to look up the locations where many of the unidentified Hoya species were collected, Islands like Ambon, Palawan, Haraku and Molukken. Part of determining the proper name for a species lies in the area of it's origin. Some species have a very large range while others are endemic so even though many Hoyas look alike they may in all reality not be as closely related as they appear. Many of the smaller islands are obviously not included on the map but there are several of the ones I mentioned.

Yep, Mike you're right. I was thinking of the your H sp Sulawesi.
Funny, Shanna's doesn't look a lot like mine. I suppose, growing conditions, light and all that jazz huh.
