Hummingbird Garden

I have a question and hopefully someone can help

I have recently moved up to Indiana from Florida and naturally my hummingbird feeders came with me. I have had quite a few through the summer. Someone told me recently that in Indiana you are to stop feeding them at a different time than in Florida so that they will migrate. I have done research on the internet and can't find a specific date or time. If someone could let me know I would greatly appreciate it. The hummers migrate on their own when the daylight hours get shorter, so you don't have to worry about confusing them with your feeder. There's always latecomers so keep your feeders up until you're sure there's no laggers that will appreciate the extra food on their way south.

If you have any neighbors with feeders they might be able to tell you about when this might be, or check with the local birding groups.

I leave mine out until November, just in case any late migrators pass by. I've never seen one past early October. They know when to move on...

Thanks for teaching John. I believe the name of the bit i used is an adjustable countersink. It allowed me to drill the pilot hole and the sink hole. I googled frostner or forstner and the bit i used does not look like that. The power planer worked well for me. It totally removed about 6 of the plugs, causing them to need replacing, but once i got the hang of it, it was quite clean. Worked a lot better than when i used the chisel for not so level areas of the deck boards. I was instructed by East Teak to use construction adhesive on the plugs. Will this cause me problems down the road? I filled in the cracks around the plugs afterwards with wood glue and sanded off the excess that ended up on the deck. I went ahead and sanded everything today with 80 grit and a ROS and it fixed a bunch of my issues. Now if only i had mitered all my ends i would not have those rookie gaps in the deck. A solid learning experience.

I had originally mentioned Pentair to my Pool Builder and they they seem to be really pushing the Jandy products. The only Pentair product they are using is the Variable Speed Pump. I'm sure it's not necessarily becuase they are better but because of some type of agreement with them. They both seem like good companies so I didn't have much of a problem since the only Pentair product that I was set on was the pump. They are also using the Jandy PDA remote. I don't know how compatible that would be with Pentair Intellibrite. I did read in the Jandy PDA manual that it works with the Pentair pumps though. Any idea how much of a difference in brightness I would see in a pool my size?

Black on Black, the AC/DC kitchen, is a hot look on Insta at the moment. Every one of those photographs are highly manipulated, with extra lighting during the professional photoshoot, and with Lightroom after the shoot. It takes a lot of skill to pull off good pictures, with details in the shadows, and without the whites being washed out, because of the high contrast. Our eyes don’t naturally see that way. In person, we search out the light, which blinds us to the dark, making it one large undifferentiated mass. If we squint to try y to o find the detail in the dark, it all becomes blurry. Or if we focus solely on the dark, the light blinds us, because we have dark adapted eyes. To get the to artificiality of the photographs requires a LOT of added light. A huge amount. Matte black absorbs twice as much as does gloss black. You’ll need lots more recessed lights, with higher lumen output, plus some added cable wire spotlights, and stronger under cabinet lighting. You can’t take a standard lit kitchen and paint it black and then expect to be able to see your bleeding hand in front of your face and the sharp knife in the other like the photos fake. This isn’t just a minor kitchen change. It’s a different way of living in that kitchen entirely.

Hi there, I moved into a new house recently and this is the first time in a long time, that i've had a garden, as I've been living in a apartment for the last 10+ years. As you can see from the video, I think the back garden / grass might need to be re-done, as it seems very patchy and weedy. I have a few questions which hopefully someone can help with. QUESTIONS 01 - is there anything that can be done to rejuvenate the grass... i.e - sowing more seeds over it... or is it best that it is just dug up and with a view of growing fresh new grass? 02 - I was thinking of laying sleepers at the edge of the grass and raising the garden up so that it is level... the granite area will then feel like more of a snug pit... any ideas around this? 03 - As much as I don't like artificial grass, I was half thinking of placing an artificial putting green down. Does anyone here have one? are they pricey? Thank you in advance for your help.

Feed them until they leave. Feeding them won't keep them around when they know it is time to leave and it will assure they have full tummies when they do leave. They decide to migrate based on sun and weather, not food supply.

I'm here in West Michigan. I leave my feeders up untill I havent see a hummer for weeks, usually early November. I have had one stay as long as mid October. I just want to be sure all the migrators have had a rest stop to refule.

I've heard of some staying through the winter, so there's really no deadline. They may be old or sick and can't make the migration.

So, I've been told by more experienced birders I can leave the feeders up year round if there are any takers. Can you imagine how scarce food is in the winter? Of course they need more than what we provide, but at least they have that.

Katie, I'm in Northern Indiana -- I always leave mine up till I see no hummers at all . . . sometime in October. My feeders are busier right now than ever -- I assume juvies and migrators. My little 2-year grandson stood at the window transfixed for two minutes today watching one at the feeder!

Katie---Hi , Im just south of Indianapolis and hummers will leave when its time , controlled by urges much stronger than hunger. Sometimes there times when a hummer will stay behind because it is too weak or too old to make the trip and by leaving our feeders out we can help a hummer in this situation maybe to live a little longer than it would otherwise. But by leaving feeders will in no way encourage them to stay longer than they should, if they stay there are other reasons, so by all means leave your feeders up untill you see no hummers for a few weeks, use your own judgement. Last year my hummers were gone before sept but I didnt have the hummer habitat I have now. IM having around 10 hummers each day and I doubt they are all the same as the day before as today I had 4 adult males amoung the group which would be unusual for this time of year for my area. Hummers now are looking for places to fatten up for the trip. I know they will soon leave but it wouldnt hurt to increase the dozage at this time .

I have counted 23 hummingbirds at once around my ffders for about 9 years and believe me when it is time to go they know it..
