Hummingbird Garden

house across the street got hummingbird feeder

Now I am new to Hummingbirds so I have a question I have about 5 coming to see me at all times of the day but now the lady across the street put up some feeders. Will my hummingbirds leave or will it just bring more birds???

My guess is that they will visit both feeders. This way there will be less arguments of who has the right to be at the feeder!

Yes they will visit the house across the street. Did you think that the 5 that visit you do not already make other pit stops. They will visit the house across the street , the one around the block , or even a mile down the road. In fact they will check out anything that is red, garage pull down handle, red sign or flowers , most anything that is red will get their attention. I have several feeders , flowers and lots of hummers but they will still visit else where, change your feeders at least twice a week and they will be happy.

1-3 times a week or so we get a bully at the feeder. He will perch on the tree branch right between the two feeders and chase all the other hummies away for hours. I'll sit down with the garden hose 10 feet away from the feeders and spray near (not directly at) the bully. This chases him away for only a few seconds. He will fly behind the fence and hide from my site, then immediately come after any hummingbird that comes near. I'll spray at the fence to make him relocate. He will persist and I keep on spraying till after 7-10 minutes he will give up. You would think 4-5 sprays would deter him, but it takes 20-25 times. Persistent little things! Please, Never spray directly at the bird because they are very fragile. Bully or not, we don't want to injur the little brat. He's got his reasons to guard the feeder, we just don't agree haha. Just spraying in his general direction is enough to shoo him away, and eventually make him give up.

Hey, I was wondering why you don't replace those feeders with plants that attract them? My humming birds feeders never work, but boy were they humming around my 'Gold Flame Honeysuckle', and my 'Butterfly Bushes', especially the 'Black Night' one...They love these plants and I have more success with plants that attract than those bird feeders....I had other birds common like sparrows drinking the water though..arg. I planted 5 Honey Suckle and a couple of different types of bushes and let me tell you when I say they come around, and I live in the city...I even saw them in July and the beginning of August)

I can relate. There is a group of three houses on one property up the street that I call the WTC (White Trash Compound). Over the years, we've met some of the kids/adults who live there. From what I've heard from the other neighbors, they take in a lot of foster kids. There is one woman, "the mom" who I see the most often. She seems sort of normal, and takes one of her children (not sure if this kid is foster or not) to the bus stop every morning. It seems like most of the other kids have disabilities, and go to other schools, or stay at home. She also has an adult brother who hangs out in front of the property smoking cigarettes most of the day. He always looks very dirty, and he also supposedly has learning disabilities (there is definitely something wrong with him). They don't really cause any problems, but their property is a mess. Lots of garbage everywhere, old vehicles etc. This morning while we were waiting at the bus stop, two teenaged girls came out of the house and started swearing and beating each other up!!! I took my kindergartener back in the house because I didn't want her to see/hear it. The "mother" actually came out of the house and was watching them swing at each other. Finally, she told them to take their argument inside. It was very strange. Luckily, they live about 5 houses away. If I had to live next door/across from them, I don't know what I would do.

I met with the coordinator today and had a tour of the facility. It's lovely. It's warm and cozy and has a real home-like feel about it. There are approximately 40 residents, and I met quite a few of them. One of the ladies asked the coordinator, "Where'd you find this pretty girl?" and that was so cute, as it's been ages since anyone's called me pretty or a girl! ;-) From the minute I walked in the door, folks were friendly. As I sat in the lobby and waited for the coordinator to meet me, a couple of ladies (residents) were sitting out there and they immediately started chatting with me. Just so very friendly, and obviously eager for someone NEW to talk to. There are numerous activities throughout each day, and I may be able to pop in some evenings but mostly my involvement will be on the weekends. Playing games with the residents, reading stories to them, or just taking them out into the beautiful garden courtyard on nice days so that they can get some fresh air. And talking. I'm sure there will be PLENTY of talking. The facility has a photo wall where they post pictures of residents fulfilling their "bucket list." Several of the ladies had always wanted to go to the theater, so there are photos of them dressed up at a production. One gentleman wanted to go fishing, and there's a photo of him kissing the fish he'd caught. One sweet little lady wanted to ride a motorcycle, but was too scared to get on the back of one, so they found one with a sidecar and she rode in that. As you can imagine, her photo was just beyond precious. This is a Level B facility, which was explained to me to be a facility in which the residents require SOME assistance but are generally mobile and able to feed themselves. One of the women who lives there has a little dog, and two of the men have cats. One is actually a kitten, and the receptionist told me how lonely he had been until he got this little cat, which now sleeps on his shoulders. I'm so looking forward to going back and getting involved. I felt I did pretty well today in stepping outside my own comfort zone and engaging with the residents, trying not to be self-conscious or shy. I'm pretty sure I even detected a streak of mischief in some of the women. This may be interesting! Certainly it will be a blessing to me, to be able to share some time with my new neighbors across the street.

You'll be fine. They'll visit other feeders and plants but they'll keep coming to yours. As suggested, just make sure your nectar is fresh.

There's some research that shows that when stores of the same kind open close to each other (for example, coffee shops), it brings in more business for all the coffee shops, instead of reducing it (as you'd think would happen) -- maybe the hummer feeders will work the same way! :)

Cheri01--- Another tip that might help if you dont already do it. I feed my hummers bottled water which I buy from walmart for $3.98 a case sams club. It has a much better taste than regular water, spoil them, afraid I have.

I knew that when I put my feeder out that the neighbor a couple houses down always attracted hummers so knowing they were already in the area made me feel confident that I'd have visitors also.

Do you want to keep your visitors,, keep that nectar fresh. In this really hot spell, change it at least every 2 or 3 days, no longer than that and it wouldnt hurt since you are trying draw and keep them to change it every day. I usually change mine at night when they have finished and it will be there and ready at the crack of dawn when they arrive.

It'll also help to outplant your neighbor with some hummer favorites! My neighbor put out a feeder, and got discouraged that she hadn't seen any at her feeder. Well, her first mistake was not changing the sugar water. I did tell her to, but I guess she couldn't be bothered. Secondly, her garden is mostly shaded. Although she has a beautiful garden and setup, she just doesn't have the plants. I have the edge, hehehe...

I've never noticed a hummer feeder in a neighboring yard, but I sometimes see my hummers fly out of the yard so I suppose there must be some somewhere nearby.

But I have not only 4 feeders but plenty of flowers they seem to like, so they keep coming back. I seem to have 4 or 5 that are always around the yard.

I figure that if more neighbors attract more hummers (or support babies as they mature and seek unclaimed food sources), I'm going to get most of them in my yard anyway. Heck, I would give my neighbors feeders if I thought they would use and maintain them!
