Hummingbird Garden

Lots of Activity Now :-)

After a long dry spell of seeing no hummingbirds, they arrived here again on Saturday and Sunday. Now I'm seeing the usual females and some juveniles coming to the Lady in Red salvia outside my living room window as well as at the feeder. I have not seen one single male yet this season! That is odd...usually by now I see males frequently. Anyway it is so good to have the females back again.

This evening I put COLD nectar into my Hummzinger feeder and they really did seem to feed longer. I got my binoculars and could see their long tongues going down into the feeder to drink the nectar. Amazing!

It is good to see them again. It seems like many of us are seeing more activity right now - especially with the juveniles coming to feed.

Glad to hear they're back! It is very exciting to see the juveniles! I have been trying for a long time to snap a picture but they just don't hang around long enough anywhere to get a picture.

I have been able to keep the activated charcoal working by gently crushing the larger chunks to expose additional surface area. I suppose it could stop working at some point but I just keep adding fresh and it keeps on working. I did have a problem when I tried putting it in nylon stockings. I removed it when it was not doing it's thing after a week and discovered the AC was dry! Guess I will use cotton bags or the pond planting pots with the perforated sides as I have done before. I am surprised you could not find the AC at Lowes. They always have it here in the house plant department. Sandy

pelagikos14--you can try to sleeve them or bring them in to rear. If you leave them out, they will wander a bit, but I would imagine they would still be in your garden/yard. Thanks Lindacatherine re: Mulberry--I'll check it out! My yard has been full of Pearl Crescents--it's unbelievable, a banner year. There must be around 30 or so at any given time. After the past couple of years that were distressing about butterfly numbers, things are so much better this year. Cute little Yellowpatch Skipper (I think it is).

Your sulphur looks like an Orange-barred Sulphur or Phoebis philea. I had one of these in my yard two years ago. I love the coloring! I concur with Runmede, your second butterfly is the Tawny Emperor or Asterocampa clyton. Do you have Hackberry trees? These lay their eggs in a "rack". That's great Charlotte! I'm so glad they came back and brought the kids! and that you got to see their tongues. Yesterday my son was watching one at the window feeder and called over to me whats that strange thing coming out of his beak is it a growth? I said what does it look like? he said another beak I said maybe it's his tongue? He thought that was pretty neat.

About the male rubythroat I have two around here but they keep getting chased away by the juvenile males not fully red throated but a bit of red like in standards picture. So I only see them ocasionally very early in the morning before the hummer crowd comes around he's in and out does not like the chasing and attacking game they were battling with the beaks. I think they are avoiding the bully kid! Sarah
