Cinco De Mayo Eye Count

I've been collecting for 7 year...this is my first eye count. Last year I watered way more than usual. Success!!

Tatoo has 18 eyes (it had 5 last year) and three years ago this plant was a dying nub...

Another success - Love Pat. I had one eye for 5 years, moved the plant, this year I have 6 eyes!

Another - Northern Halo (only 2-3 eyes for five years) NOW 7!

A few no shows - hope they are simply late Deja Blue & Cutting Edge.

I hope your counts look good this year!

this is a leap year for some of mine also! But I also lost a few.....time will tell when it stops raining and I can get out there and count!

I,basically,don't count eyes,especially when there a lot of them,but this year,one of my Elegans hostas which had only one eye for years,came up with 2,before the freeze. Well,the freeze stressed it so much,it added 5 new eyes since April! Several other sieboldiana-type hostas are also adding new eyes. I guess something good will come of the spring freeze,after all! too much, congrats! ... it's 44 yrs. for DH & I ... we were high school sweethearts & when we graduated, he went off to the Army & I went off to college...our separate ways...but, 9 mos. later I left home and eloped to Ft. Carson, CO.! (who needed college???) And, now he we are, many many yrs. later. (went back to college in my early 40's & changed careers) God has certainly blessed us with good family & friends! nana...we're hoping to hit that "50" mark! Have to support Jeri's evaluation of the color of this rose. It has its very brief moment when the color is fresh and five minutes later it isn't pretty anymore. I actually saw this at the Sacramento City Cemetery this spring when believe me I was on a MAJOR rose-enjoyment-rush at that moment and seeing a faded Cinco de Mayo was underwhelming. However if it turns out to be healthy, you have room for it, flowers well and was on sale why not:) If I hadn't seen its late in the bloom color first hand I probably would have gone for it also. Nana...I have to agree w/everyone...this is such a festive table. From the colorful sombrero and tablecloth to all your great accessories..I too love the vintage burro planter and the cute S&P. Funny, in all my years, I've never had a margarita , I guess it's never too late...so along with the others here, I'll have one too! jane

Nana, I am sorry that I"m so behind, I tried to post last night, thought it went through, but it didn't. Guess what? Earlier tonight, I tried again and it still didn't go. Hopefully the 3rd time will be the charm. I love your table, the linens are so good, the flower napkin ring gorgous; the little burro and the sombros are the finishing touch, and I can just imagine how pretty some corn chips and salsa would look in your chip&dip platter. Love it all, Of course you will find the chili peppers and maracas now that it is too late to use them this year, but think of all the fun you will have looking for them for next year. The hunt is half the fun; just don't so like I did with a St Patties wreath, forget about buying it until I found it getting my Easter stuff out and found it. Stress, damage, moving all can lead to dormant eyes popping out. You may have heard of the stomp method of division, walk up and step in the middle of the plant, which causes dormant eyes to sprout? I understand how it works just never done it!

If you want divisions you can do the Zumberizing method, search there should be references. You probably will not have more leaf weight but you will have move eyes (divisions).

We are all SO connected! I just happened to be counting eyes today, too! The most - 98 on a five-year-old Sub & Substance. Also lots of 'fairy rings' - is that what melting out is? Should I stomp on them? They are the 18-year olds. I'm going to go look up Zumberizing. You better not be pulling our legs, EO. I fall for stuff real easy!

Had a long discussion about fairy rings with Schmid and he didnÂt offer a good horticultural explanation, I'm not sure anyone knows for sure, well I guess someone does but I've not found that person. They are found in many plants, I think someone told of huge fairy rings observed in other plants like a 100 yards or something. In any case I wondered if the soil in the center was used up so I put a large amount of mulch in the center of a couple of "fairy rings" last year and haven't looked yet. This soil being used up doesn't fit the other things I believe about the soil organisms carrying nutrients about everywhere so I donÂt expect eyes to jump up in the center.

I also feel that it could be the plant shades out the center.

Bill Zumbar showed me how to do it here at my place; I assure you it is a method. If you canÂt find it IÂll explain. I will tease but not actually mislead or if I do it will usually be so outrageous that youÂll know.
