Old Garden Roses

Hi- I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on growing Old Garden Roses in Fort Myers. I have been struggling with Hybrid Tees (which did great in Gainesville, too much work here, I think...they die slowly, rather than thrive)

I'm thinking of planting OGR's on the west side of my house. There is a large maple tree, afternoon sun only.

Think it would work, or perhaps I should plant something else?

Roses do best with a lot of sunlight, but if you get four hours or so that should be enough. You know to buy fortuniana rootstock, no?

My favorite OGR is Louise Phillipe. He's a beautiful red china that is fragrant. It is about the only rose I know that does well in Florida sand own root.

Check out the Antique Roses forum right here on GW . Lots of Florida rose growers post there . Read the posts from southern posters and you will be astounded at the varieties available . Also read helpmefind.com for more choices .

We have dozens and dozens of OGRs as choices growing on their own root stock that do very well in our climate .
I have just 22 varieties and I know Nova and others here have 50 or more . The OGRs do not need Fortunia rootstock and thrive on their own .

Now is a wonderful time to plant OGRs . I just moved three roses yesterday in anticipation of rain .

Most European OGRs bloom on old wood -- even many of those which repeat. So what happens is that new canes (thick shoots from the base) will grow this year, and next year will bloom on laterals on last year's canes. After the first flush, if you cut back the laterals on last year's shoots, they'll bloom again (if the rose repeats). Basically, they bloom on new shoots growing from last year's canes. This is the case for most of the long-caned Bourbons and Hybrid Perpetuals. Some of those with an extra dose of China or Tea will bloom on new shoots the same year, but 'Zephirine Drouhin' isn't one of those. So if this rose is new for you, don't expect much in the way of blooms the first year -- sometimes not much the second year, either. The rose first needs to grow its layer of canes which will mature and then flowerHybrid Teas and Floribundas have heavier doeses of China-derived repeat-blooming genes, and so they will bloom on new shoots their first year (hence their being able to take hard-pruning in Spring and still flower that same year). :-) ~Christopher

Small Old Garden Roses for Small Gardens

Tenor_peggy , I spray my potted roses with milk and garlic and all the leaves look healthy even the HPs. I accept spraying because just about every plant I have (zinnias, vegetables, etc) have to be sprayed to reduce the pests and diseases. This Fall I might experiment with putting organic banana peels and cleaned eggshells (with a little cinnamon to deter ants) in the pots to see if the thin leaves will become thicker.

Just wanted to let anyone in the area know...there is going to be a presentation on Old Garden Roses at the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens in Spokane, next Saturday (April 11) at noon. I've been so caught up with fixing up the farm the last few years...I didn't even realize they had restored these gardens. Western facing afternoon full sun is harsh in Florida. I do have a couple of roses in conditions like that. My Belinda's Dream is very tough. It is not an old garden rose but seems to do much better than the hybrid teas. I don't spray any of the roses anymore and Belinda is usually pretty clean. Souvenir de la malmaison is my favorite old garden rose, but it is only moderately more healthy than hybrid teas in my garden.

I consider Malcom Manners the expert when it comes to roses in Central Florida. Below is a link to website that has a number of excellent articles on roses and one to an article that Malcom Manners wrote regarding own root vs. fortuniana rootstock.

The key is the type of soil that one has.
