This plant is a Jatropha Multifida also called a Coral
Plant. I have one large one in my garden and several
small ones that I started from the seed pods. They are
a beautiful plant that can grow very tall, although often
in the winter they lose leaves, but always comes back.

I would wait until March to do any pruning of it unless
it looks bad. They sometimes lose leaves when we get a
cold snap like we did in 2010. I usually cut it back to
a height where it will look bushy. I've seen them all
different sizes from a couple of feet tall to 12 feet tall.
Mine is about 7 feet tall now, but is losing some leaves
because of the cool nights we had in November. Less leaves
seem to come off if I water it a bit because here in
Sarasota we've only had about 1 1/3 inches of rain since
November one and most of it 2 days ago.
They say it's natural to lose some leaves when nights start
getting below 50 degrees.

Mark, too bad you don't live closer, could give you seedlings of it. Unless you would want to come to Port St Lucie.

Thanks for the advice to wait til March Gardenbysarasota, I will heed that! My problem has always been that whenever I prune, I only get another single leader and not multiple branches. And any seedlings I have dug up and repotted seem to want to stay single trunked, which leads to tall, skinny plants. If I try to prune these, sometimes they just sulk and refuse to branch at all! Need to keep in a pot for now, til I move into my under construction home next spring.
Wallisadi (Mark?), I only have one other single stemmed eedling in a pot which doesn't look very happy right now!
