Hi all...I have this hoya hindu rope I have had it for I'd guess maybe 7 or more years...it has never bloomed for me..

I only but it outside 1 summer, because it got covered with mealys and it took me 2 years to get rid of them...

its been over a year now mealy free....

the plant is on a 4 foot stand, but the plant is 5 feet long....very full pot....

it sits in a filtered south window, I water it with a bloom booster I water once a week, I probably could water less if I repotted to a bigger pot... I still have no flowers, any suggestions??? thanks for any help....linda

I have a specimen plant that is between 13-14 years old. It currently resides in a 16" basket but needs to be re potted as it tends to dry out too quickly. I guess that's because it's about 6 1/2 - 7 ft long. It was longer but i got crazy last year and took some off the bottom of it because it was bit unmanageable when moving it in and out of the gh. Mine blooms reliably every year but there was a time about 3 years ago when it really put on a show. It only did it that one time and never again. I counted over 130 clusters of flowers open on it at one time. It bloom every year but hasn't done that again since that first time.

Here's how I take care of mine.

First,do not let it dry out completely. If you do you're just sending an invitation to the mealy bugs letting them know that their dinner is ready!!!! A dry hindu rope is a mealy magnet!!! Keep the plant moist but not always soaking wet. If you ever get a bad infestation of mealies in a rope it's nearly impossible to ever get rid of them completely. Trust me I know!!! I got slack once and allowed mine to dry out for a short while and it got them so bad that the you'd of thought it was a cotton plant!! I ended up having to find a container large enough to submerge the entire thing in a bath of Bayers. I don't like using that stuff but it seems to be thee one method of getting rid of them in a bad situation. I have been chemical free with my plants now for a couple of years and try to stay on top of any pest that I see either by physically removing them with my hands or using alcohol.

The second thing is to have it growing in very bright indirect light. That should promote blooming. Full sun will burn it badly and you'll end up with a very unsightly plant,so no direct sun.

Thank you everyone for your replies! Marlorena, both of those varieties are gorgeous and I haven't really heard of either, I will have to look them up, I Iove the looks of both of those photos! After just googling "climbing Lady Hillingdon" and looking at the photos and reading through peoples' overall experience with her, I found myself swooning over this rose, and remembering why I decided to order it in the first place. Olga's photos were certainly a part of that, her specimen is just the epitome of what a romantic garden rose should look like, just absolutely stunning! So now I just HAVE to give her a go. If she doesn't work out for me, then I will probably use either Reve d'Or or Teasing Georgia in that spot. Reve is classically gorgeous & sounds healthy and easy to train, but I do love the huge, lush blooms of TG , even though she is more of a struggle to work with, she seems very vigorous. I was thinking of using Reve in a spot along a (future) fence that is on a sidewalk (soon to be built by the city) that will have pretty heavy pedestrian traffic, so the thornlessness sounds like it might be helpful there. I am still worried about how Cl Lady Hillingdon will fare with Tennessee's notorious late season cold snaps, but hopefully I will be skilled enough in protecting her roots/canes for her to be able to get established. She is coming from Roses Unlimited, and all I ever hear is that their plants are some of the largest 1 gal. roses purchasable from the main few internet nurseries. We are coincidentally supposed to have a record setting low temperature tonight of -7, which seems like a game changer, as I thought I was zone 7a, but maybe I'm more like a 6b? It is a little confusing for me to figure out my little "micro climate" in particular because I live so close to the city, I feel like it is always a few degrees warmer here than it is, say at my dad's house just a couple of miles north of here & more in the country. I really should get an outdoor thermometer for my front porch, since that is where all my young potted roses are residing this winter, then I could compare the forecasted temperatures with my own and see what I come up with. Thanks for all the comments! Every individual unit can be bypassed - with the exception of the pre-filter and pressure switch being tied to one another. That's by design, but I'm considering switching it. I didn't note it on the diagram, but thank you for pointing out the supports. The larger red and blue (copper) pipes will be supported at the corner where they first drop down. There's no drywall on the ceiling in that room right now, but when I complete half a dozen other projects down there it will be, and that will be above the drywall. Same thing with the pressure relief valve. Everything else I figured would be okay, except the pressure relief valve and prefilter.... Still thinking about how to do that in a way that looks decent. Drains are just going to be 3/4" PEX, so I didn't bother modeling them. I was just going to use tees to connect them all to a single drain line. Though about using some check valves, but I don't think it will actually be necessary. I am curious about how the aerator discharge and the filter/softener backwash will affect one another, but I don't expect any problems. Will labelthe thing after a few revisions and repost. Sorry about that! I agree with you on the CPVC valves. I'm aiming for no metal components before treatment is complete to reduce corrosion. It would probably take decades before I noticed the difference, but I am hoping that these are higher quality valves and will last longer. The aeration tank is pressurized - I'm thinking 60-75 psi as the range. As far as a sparger, I'd definitely prefer to use one! I'd read that they will stop up very quickly with higher iron levels in the water. Any thoughts on that? For the resin... Ya, if I don't hear back from them before I'm ready to buy I'll definitely be looking elsewhere. My backup is Resintech's CG10. The UV system is actually already installed. Old owners put it in because of a failed bacteria test with water from a bathroom faucet. I'm pretty sure it was introduced after the well. I'm planning on shocking the well when I do all this and installing a new UV Bulb. When that bulb is near its end of life I'll do some tests and if everything is negative I'll remove the UV system. I did an L shaped with Island. It works for the way we cook and entertain. In past kitchens... We have had a G shaped , A giant U shaped with inside U island. (really a barrier), Galley kitchen, a galley that turned into a L at the end, a U with a peninsula, an L shaped.. and when we did our final kitchen. We chose an L shape with giant Island and wide wide aiels to accommodate friends and multiple cooks. Think about the way you cook. If my kitchen were only about cooking I would do the Galley as that is easy for a single cook with various work stations and saves on stepping to complete a task.

Grover any chance you can show me what it would look like with no railing and pulling the left side of the steps a bit more to the left (towards the end of the window) i was just looking at greige color schemes and I’m feeling super over whelmed. looks like a darker warm brown with a light grey compliments and contrasts with each (went through your color schemes) so now im thinking... the silver traverntine for the top of the steps and the top of the porch with a more brown stack stone color for the pillar, and light post? Or should I reverse it? Make a darker slate for the top of the porch/steps and a lighter grey with warm tones for the stack stone? God... I’m going crazy

That is the most awesome hindu rope ever! Way to Grow!

I found out last year that my hindu rope variegated (the one with the yellow in the center) does not like to be moved. It did great until I moved it from one side of the room to the another in my office. It went into fast decline even when I moved it back to its original location. So it never got over being mad with me. :-)

Hi Linda,

My sis has a compacta that's just huge - hangs in her dining room and reaches the floor. It's massive and she used to complain it had never bloomed. I got her to try Eleanor's VF-11 and within a few months, it started blooming. That's why she now swears by the stuff and even though she doesn't make much profit after the shipping, she's the only one in the area who sells it in her nursery.
