I Think I'm In HEAVEN!

Last night at dusk we were were watching our regular female broadtail....only now there is a male with a red gorget! While we watched them we were honored by the presence of someone new with a very sharp rusty looking suit and bright orange bowtie on his neck - I believe this was a male rufous! He thought he was king of the jungle - he chased everyone from the feeders and nose-dived them all! What a show!!!!!!!!!

I NEVER thought I'd see more than one hummer at once in my yard! I went to buy a 3rd feeder last night...tee hee

P.S. For anybody who just gets that "occasional" hummer....just keep with the clean feeders and they will come. I was told that if one is happy he will bring his brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles!!!!!! Now I believe this IS TRUE!

If you are trying to keep a handy stock of extra leaves as cover material for your compost pile, then just about any method works. Plastic bags, extra bin, wire enclosure, open pile, shredded or not. If being used as extra compost cover materials, you may wish to keep it dry so it doesn't freeze on you when you need to use it as cover. Whatever works best for your particular situation and space.

1. fcbs.org 2. yes but not direct burning midday sun 3. its best to try to duplicate rainforest conditions, either mist daily or hit with the hose "rainshower" style daily. Try to keep the water in the cup of the plant fresh. Don't water the soil directly, just let water from the cup "slop over" or you may rot the plant 4. if the cup is full when you leav, should be okay for a week if it isn't immensely hot, best to get someone to plant sit

Verna, put that sewing machine on the patio! On second thought the capes still might not be fininshed if you can't take your eyes off the hummers long enough to sew. Dang. The preserved goodies are as good as gone already. And Nancy and I had the same taste in cookbooks for our baker swap partners - shall I just say Great Minds Think Alike?? So the only thing left I can lay claim to is that GORGEOUS wooden basket. However, it sounds like I'll have to fight Jessy for it. Which I am fully prepared to do. I'm 6' tall - how tall is Jessy? I'm thinking leg wrestling, which I will win, or perhaps just a plain ol' knock down. It would be worth it for that basket! Yeah, I can take 'er. Pretty sure.

Hi popmama, I am in east Denver. I have been here about 10 years and this is the first year I have attracted hummingbirds to my yard. We just moved but only a few blocks from where we previously were living. Our last yard was small with many flowers - No hummers. It might've been due to the fact we were on a corner and it was a more noisy location.

We now are on a VERY quiet block, we have a larger yard...much more lush with many trees and bushes, we don't have any flowers planted yet this year as we are still settling in, but we do have 3 feeders. In the past 2 weeks my hummers have increased in number from 1 to approx. 6 or more!!

Just keep your feeders out and make sure they are cleaned every 2 days in this intense heat we are getting - don't give up - they will come!
