Jewel of a nursery found close to home

I discovered a source of beautiful, reasonably priced hostas right in my back yard (almost). Yesterday I

drove an hour to Sanford, NC and shopped @ Frog Pond Farm (love that name!).

I bought: Dragon Wings, Dorset Blue, Invincible, White Christmas, Night before Christmas, Ginko Craig, Regal Splendor, Paradigm, and Orange Marmalade....all for $84.00.

All very nice plants (multiple eyes) with good root systems.

Darn, I paid $30.00 at Plant Delights for Liberty (same size plant) and they have it for $13.00!!!

If you live in this area, you need to check them out.

Now excuse me, I have plants to pot.

Lowsily, it's at 156 Frog Pond Lane.
From NC87, turn on 42E at K-Mart, go 3 miles, left on Avents Ferry Rd. Go 0.4 mi., left on Poplar Springs Church Rd. Go 2.9 miles, left on Lick Creek Rd. Frog Pond Farm on left. They are open Fri. & Sat., call for other times: 919-776-1879. The lady's name is Katherine & she is super nice!

If you want to cut it down, cut it off at ground level and immediately paint the stump with some kind of brush/tree herbicide with 2,4-D in it. If it resprouts, girdle the new shoot and again paint the 2,4-D containing herbicide on it. Always use chemicals wisely and follow label directions. That stuff will kill other trees/shrubs if you get it on them. On the other hand, if you trim them up, they make a dandy tree in far west Texas where other trees won't make it. I don't think 9-10 feet from the foundation is close enough to hurt. I've had them closer than that.

I am so sad I missed it. My pride and joy additions from Rice Creek include (but are not limited to)the 'Leonard Messell' magnolia which has reached proportions far greater than any information at the time of purchase led us to believe possible; petasites giganteus/japonicus (yes, Betty warned us about this, but I still love the thug); and my personal crown jewel, my acer japonicum atropurpurea (I'm sure I must have screwed up somewhere in typing that!) which is now, after about 10 years, a gorgeous, spreading 9 x 12' dazzler. It was an 8" pup when I selected it from a group of 30 or so. Best plant purchase I ever made. There are other wonderful plants that have graced my gardens for lesser periods. What I will miss the most is the inspiration and the idea that anything, even this far north, is possible. Kate

This is obviously the stock of a wholesale grower :-) And in some areas of Oregon, you can't drive 100 feet without encountering one - they seem to be the option of choice for anyone with land that was formerly a hazelnut orchard. The problem is that that there are SO many wholesale growers in the region that unless they have an established retail customer base to which to sell their stock, times are very tough. And most successful retail nurseries that have been in business for any length of time also have an established list of wholesale vendors they focus on, often the larger, more established and better known ones. But you do have a point, eeldip -- even the established retailers have curbed or reduced their purchasing of landscape plants to correspond to the vagaries of the current economy. Therefore, the smaller, newer wholesalers have even a more difficult time generating business. There is a higher failure rate in this side of the business as opposed to retail because of the timing of the production of these larger plants and an inability to adapt rapidly or change product lines.

Hi Michele,

Frog Pond is owned by some wonderful people I know from the North Carolina Hosta Society. We had our summer meeting at their nursery last August!

Sounds like you are pretty close to me. We're having our spring meeting (for the Hosta Society) next Sunday, May 20th. The meeting is actually in Reidsville, NC at Moongate Nursery. If you're not busy, you should think about attending :-)

Angie, I live right outside of Fayetteville. Thank you for the invite to the Hosta Society, but I have family visiting from out of state. Katherine @ Frog Pond did mention the Hosta Society to me as well.
Sorry for the delay in posting this, but I've had computer problems....grrrrr.

well I finally got to go. I hadn't planned on buying anything since I'm out of room . lol but I still managed to pick up a sum of all which is going in a whiskey barrel. along with a summer breeze sea thunder and orange marmalade. the lady there was super friendly . I diff plan on a return trip.
