I found this old thread from 2005. My Hoya I bought yesterday labeled H. Bilobata is indeed H. Tsangii aka DS-70. This would also confirm that Peanut01's Hoya (under the thread "Hoya Project") on the far left is also H. Tsangii aka DS-70...

Yes, this is the same kind of deal as wayetii/kentiana! It gets really irritating and confusing.

I clicked on your link, but there's nothing there for some reason.

If you bought an EA hoya labeled H. bilobata, then it is definitely H. sp. DS-70 (which is not the same as tsangii). Tsangii has yellow flowers, while DS-70 has pinkish flowers.

If you go to the link below and scroll down to my post on Sept. 28th, that will explain the tsangii/DS-70 mess. Even though the original poster called the hoya H. tsangii, it's actually H. sp. DS-70, which is what your blooms will look like (the pics of the blooms are shown in the first post).

Looking at the photos maybe you will not see any difference but in person they are very different. Sorry if I was of no help.

Hoya sp DS-70 has a soft velvet like surface to the leaves while Hoya bilobata has fairly smooth leaves with a reddish margin. The flowers are quite different if you look at them side by side but the leaves are very easy to tell apart.

There are undoubtedly other similar species out there, plants like Hoya burtoniae but only a hand full that are commonly misidentified or mislabeled in collections. . For a list of the Acanthostemma section species take a look at the article in Stemma Journal Vol 2 #3. If your new to Stemma Journal and you like Hoyas I would recommend you to get reading. You will learn pretty much anything you could possibly want to know about Hoyas and then some. Did I mention it's free and there are lots of photos of beautiful plants?

Here is an old photo of my Hoya tsangii as a cutting. My plant is still too small to flower but it has been a good grower, can't wait to see the little yellow blooms.

The photo of the tsangii cutting is so similar to a Dischidia I grow, it's uncanny. I love the long leaves. Now why in heaven's name would anyone mix that up with DS-70?? All the controversy around the DS-70 and no one ever posted a photo before, and whenever I did a search of either name, I came up with photos like mine, so I continued calling mine tsangii (with the "aka"...) because the name has a nicer ring. Now that I've finally seen a photo, I guess I have to use the DS-70 name (yuck - doesn't do the plant justice!)

So tell us - where did you get your true tsangii??

Denise you can find Hoya tsangii in David Liddle's collection but I got mine from Paul Shirley under the name Hoya odetteae.

So.. Here I was all convinced that the EA plant I have was a DS-70 mislabeled as a sulawesii. But now I'm even more confused.

What has you feeling confused? If you show us a photo of the plant I can tell you what it is, no need to see flowers to tell these plants apart. Hoya bilobata is much less common than Hoya DS-70 as well so it is much less likely you have that species.

Its hard to see in the photo but the leaves are slightly fuzzy and have a reddish edge. My hoyas have been getting about 3-4 hours of morning sun all summer so the leaves are a little washed out.

Your plant looks like DS-70 to me.
Its a bit washed out from the amount of light its getting. It looks like my moms plant and her flowers all the time.

Tigerdawn when you put your cursor on the photo and the little box pops up go down and click on the Html box and highlight it, then press Control and C for copy. To place the link where you want the photo to appear just put your cursor on the spot and press Control P for paste and the photo will appear.

Your plant has very light coloured leaves compared with Hoya DS-70 even when grown in bright light. What is the leaf surface like, smooth or soft like velvet? There is a good chance you have another Hoya species. The leaves look too pointed to be Hoya incurvula or brevialata but that could just be the growing conditions especially if you are growing slightly dryish and in high light. Either Hoya brevialata or Hoya incurvula is produced by Exotic Angel and sold at many home improvement stores.
Your plant looks fairly large, has it flowered?

I posted your picture directly...so it shows up. Your hoya is very NICE!!

Sorry I missed the last part of your post. If your plant has a soft velvet leaf surface and a reddish leaf margin it is most likely Hoya DS-70 although it still looks very light even for being grown in bright light.

Blooms will give a positive ID.

My hoya is exactly the same as Peanut01's leftmost plant in her hoya project thread.

It flowered last summer soon after I put it in its big pot. It must have had peduncles already forming. I didn't think to get any picures. (dummy!) It hasn't bloomed again. It's in a huge and deep pot with regular potting soil. I want to repot it soon. But it has grown very well for me, even with the abusive conditions I've put it through so far. I guess that's why EA decided to sell it to the mass public!

oh, and I can't tell if the leaves are pubescent or not because I haven't felt a truly pubescent hoya. They're fuzzier than my carnosas, but just so they have a matte finish instead of a glossy finish. Does that make sense?

If it is the plant in the front left hand position of your Hoya project photo it's Hoya DS-70.
