That's pulchella? Looks quite like Tequila. The pulchellas I picked up some years ago turned out to be s. uinverticillata, so I've not seen pulchella 'Kunth' before....hmmmm.Nice...My Tequilas get to about 12 ft or more.....does the Kunth get that large also? Wonderful shot of the hummer. The only place here that I've come across one of their nest was in the oak tree..guess I'd better start looking around more. Crows are building nests here and the red tails are throwing a fit with their screeching, so I suppose they must be also. I would have grabbed that whale pot also......probably never see another one of those. It's a bummer to go to yard sales without taking every cent you've got...there's always so much stuff that 'gets away'.....lol

That'll work for Lady In Red, it's a plant in a big hurry. My plants started in March were in bloom around the beginning of June, and heavily by mid June. This should be treated as an annual. Black & Blue is a cultivar of Salvia Guarantica so you need a cutting or a plant to start from. It might make it through your winters if you have well drained soil on the sandy side. Folks overwinter cuttings all time of this one indoors, because north of zone 8 you can't be certain it will be back. Overwintered indoors plants can be blooming when they are set out in May. Those plants often suffer some set backs after transplant, so you'd be safer thinking early July with heavy blooming not beginning until mid to late in the same month.

Hi Steve, When a plant that is normally bushy in good growth conditions but is very leggy with a lot of space between the placement of leaves on the stem, it needs to be cut back. These plants are about 2 1/2' to 3' tall with weak stems. They were on sale because of the freezing weather we had after they received them. They were trying to get them sold before they began to lose them as perennials that are in gallons can be damaged by bad weather. B&B salvia is not hardy here, so they were not taking chances on losing them. Your Lowe's may not have them in stock yet - this was early for ours to get their's in. Mary

You need to cut it back to the bottom 3-5 sets of new growth -- if you haven't already -- because it blooms on new growth. If you already have some new growth that is above what you are going to keep you can cut that off the debris and stick it in some potting soil. There are earlier threads that explain this quite well. You don't say what size pot you have it in, but I'd choose one that is big enough to: 1. fit the size of the plant so it it doesn't tip over; and, 2. big enough so that it looks nice. You can also put it in the ground in the Spring in CT; just make sure it has good drainage. Note: I was re-reading the threads above. I thought of a Salvia that is tall (3-6'), thin, multi-stemmed, sort of wispy, bright sky-blue, likes regular water and would look nice behind your roses: Salvia uliginosa, aka Bog Sage. It does spread on underground runners, but that might look nice behind your roses. Also, according to Betsy Clebsch S. uliginosa survives in Essex, England with winter mulching, so it might survive in your CT garden.
