variegated H. obovata
Comments (11)Jan, I hear people say that about variegated plants in general all the time. I now have 13 variegated hoyas in my collection, they are ----- acuta albomarginata--green center /yellow border acuta variegata--yellow center / green border archboldiana australis "Lisa" carnosa-rubra carnosa compacta-variegated rope kenejiana variegata kerrii variegated--yellow center / green border kerrii reverse variegated--green center/yellow border macrophylla variegated macrophylla pot O' gold--from Asiatica multiflora variegated obovata variegated The acuta albomarginata is one of the fastest growing hoyas that I have. It's currently in an 8" basket and almost daily I have unwind it's vines where it has attached itself to the surrounding plants. I was also informed on DG, and all but called a liar for making the statement that the same plant had over 30 clusters of open flowers on it at once, even after I had posted a picture of it in full bloom, that variegated plants don't bloom well either. I do know from experience that the stability of the variegation in plants is not always 100% and that they can and sometimes do revert back to being all green but so far knock on wood all of my variegated hoyas are growing like weeds with the exception of the archboldiana and the kenejiana. I received them both last year as very tiny (1 node) cuttings direct from Thailand and they have both struggled a bit to get going but they are holding on. In fact the kenejiana has finally decided that it wants to stay alive and grow and has out on several new sets of leaves recently. I'm hoping that as much as I paid for this obovata that it will take off and grow as well as the other variegated hoyas I have. It's a very healthy plant and I had to re pot it because it was quite root bound in the pot that it came in. david...See MoreCouldn't stand it anymore... had to get var. macrophylla!
Comments (20)You know what? I've been finding that I'm getting some very interesting colors from variegated African violets that are growing under fluorescent lights. Most of my plants are growing in the window, but I put a couple in some of my terrariums, and I have some leaves started on a lower shelf under fluorescents also. These guys get no sunlight. One of my plantlets is growing leaves that are completely pink (they're supposed to be green, cream, and pink variegated.) Another one is also growing more pink bits than normal, and is very variegated. It was never this variegated in the window. Maybe it's something to do with the fluorescents? I'm just throwing it out there as one of the reasons you may be getting very bright red leaves, when those in sunlight aren't so much. But I don't know for sure....See MoreHoya polystachya IML 1410 growth
Comments (13)We're set to break a record of days over 100 degrees in Oklahoma this summer. The last record was 50 and we're in the 40's. It wouldn't be so bad if most of the days were 100-105 but most of them have been above that and I think we may have hit our all- time record high of 113 the other day. That's just the official OKC numbers; people have been exceeding that all over the state all summer. Needless to say, my plants aren't happy. I brought in a bunch of them today because watering every morning just wasn't enough. I think I need a polystachya. That is a gorgeous plant! On the growth contest, do we have to pick the plants that we think will grow the fastest or do we take pictures of everyone and then compare in the fall? Either way, I think it's a good way to get me to take more pictures of my plants!...See MoreAugust updates
Comments (22)I almost always lose new growth from a newly shipped plant as well. I just chalk it up to traveling stress. They usually recover in a week or two. I never thought neem smelled all that bad... until I decided to spray all my plants down as a preventative. Blech! Gag! In an enclosed space (bathroom) and even with the fan going, it is pungent. I'm flushing the soil of a bunch of them too, to keep the fertilizer salts down. Quite a process. I'm actually still in the middle of it, but I needed a small break. I did manage to get some pics of a couple harder to access hoyas in my collection. Wayetti took a break from blooming, so I decided it was safe to extricate it from its spot. There's a patch in the middle that is bleached almost yellow, so it's getting a lot of light. That's why it was blooming so much. I figured that was the case, but now I've actually gotten to see it. Variegated obovata is looking good. But it definitely seems like it will be a heavy plant. Ok, back to the stinky neem spraying process. Also, I think I will end up with RSI from pulling the trigger on that spray bottle so much... ah well... hoping to keep critters at bay for a while, at least....See Morecosmodious
