If you don't yet have Brother Stefan, it should be high on your wish list. Also Touch of Class, if you don't already have it, Final Summation, if you have room, and Tokudama Flavocircinalis, if you will live long enough for it to mature.

but NOT Tok. Flavocircinalis! I'd sort of hoped to have one be extraordinary earlier on, though! Loved your
comment on that one--gave me a good chuckle!! That's why it's not been on my list in the past.

Ann Kulpa is great! For me, it's been a bit slow to reach maturity, but then again, I did buy a smaller plant.

I'm not a big fan of Tok Flav. Too slow and can't take much sun.

'Prestige and Promise' is a newer variety, that so far looks fantastic. I got it from Naylor during the HL auction last fall. It's suppose to be the Tet version of 'Cadillac'.

And after seeing 'War Paint' on the convention tour last year, I decided I had to have that! It does fade to all green by mid summer, but it's SO worth it for the early summer.

You need some solids to balance all of those varigared types. How about some party favor, love pat, niagra falls, abiqua drinking gourd, lakeside ripples, alsimsifolia, dancing queen, piedmont gold, and so many more great solids.

I'm loving American Sweetheart and Eternal Flame this year. Great colors and interesting shape.

Summer Music and Popcorn are good too. I just got Paradise Glory and it's a standout--thought I don't know how the color will change as the season progresses.

My favorite new one -- Luna Moth!!

How about Beachmaster and Clifford's Comet or Clifford's Stingray, Fragrant Bouquet, Orange Marmalade, Striptease....
But for contrast I would add a Hadsen's blue and perhaps Wedgewood, because I really think you need some contrast.

Oooh, LOVE Devil's Advocate. Got that last year. And Luna Moth, though it's not a dark margin as you requested, went from 2 eyes last August to 9 eyes this year! It's out of the same line as Sweet Home Chicago (you're welcomed).

Just so y'all know, Janice's garden is not limited to JUST the ones she listed. These are just the ones she has with darker margins! Her gardens are very nicely composed and she pays good attention to mixing things up!

Ann Kulpa is a really nice plant. Princes Anastasia is just a renamed clone of Bright Lights - the registration was incorrect and it was not the plant it was thought to be. Spring Fling is nice but there is a wide margined form now called Tropical Dancer that might end up being even better. So far the jury is out for me on Ice Follies. My oldest clumps of Antioch all have wider margins than my young Ice Follies so I'm not certain that it was worth the money, but I'll give them more time before I decide.

Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. That is what you mean by being under the weather,isn't it? Anyhow,I thought you had every named hosta in your"jungle"! Lol! Phil

Chris, thank you for straightening me out about 'Princess Anastasia'. I wondered why I hadn't heard of it before! Funny thing--I've really wanted an 'Antioch' for a long time and I know it's an oldie and I thought it would be easy to find! I see a huge clump of it at a rental property in our neighborhood and I've been tempted to stop and ask to buy some of it sometime!

I'm finding that many of the oldies are some of my very favorite that I have!

I may wait awhile on that one, but it's on my list!

I hope that gives you the feel of where I'm working and why I'd love some more dark magined options. I will definitely consider those mentioned I don't already have. Thank you so much for taking the time to try and help me out! I still welcome any other thoughts on that spot! I'm hoping to put another ever-lovin whiskey barrel in the back spot to fill with a dark-margined one. The 'Satisfaction' will probably stay in the smaller one, but will be more permanently planted and I'm hoping to get another chimney flue liner to put to the left of the open spot behind the baby 'Blue Mammoth' that's struggling there!

You may catch a glimpse of some blue granite here and there--I'm creating a dry creek bed in this area that runs down the side of the hosta area of our yard! Got more granite to get and some nice large rocks and some 'creek' type rocks to toss around, yet!

I'm having all kinds of fun with this and hopefully, the voles won't be happy when I'm done trying to make life difficult for them in my garden
at least in this area! I don't plan on doing it any place else--so far! I think it would lose the effect I'm going for to make it an all-over sort of look!

Janice, I have had awful luck w/ Spring Fling also. I purchased it from Hallson's several years ago and it was huge and beautiful when shipped (as all of theirs are!) and it just keeps shrinking! I might move it this year.

One that is an incredibly beautiful monster for me this year is 'Beckoning'. It changes throughout the season and is stunning! Do you have that one yet?

Sorry you're not feeling the greatest. It's this stupid weather, furnace on and went straight to air conditioning with temps in the 90's. Crazy. No recommendations, just wanted to enable you to get some more Hosta. Should make you feel better. :)

Yes, mink, there was a thread last year bashing our poor 'Beckoning'! I was amazed and thought to come to her defense but thought, instead, that it's wonderful that there are so many different hosta to choose from and that can appeal to so many of us, even when tastes differ! There are many I DO NOT care for, myself, (well, maybe a few, really) so I'm okay with someone or many someones not liking one that I do like!

With that said, I'm going to go out and hug my 'Beckoning', very carefully, mind you! ;o)

I think I've decided to plant in that spot I'm working on, an extra 'June' I have in the smaller barrel, then the spare 'Satisfaction' I recently purchased, in a pot to the left of the barrel I want centered in the back and I'm going to put the 'Singin' in the Rain' in it--the one I had in the bed to the left of this spot! I plan to get another flue liner and put it to the right of the S&S and put a draping blue toned hosta of some kind or, a green margined drapey one--if I can find one locally!

Hey there, Deanna! :o) I had a 'Clifford's Stingray' last year (in a raised bed) but it did not make it back this year! It was neat but way too small (height wise) for where I'd have it in mind.

I leave all my hosta outside where they sit in their barrels, pots, whatever--except the smaller ones I have in smaller pots on our deck. Those I set aside sometimes on the north-side of the house or as in last winter, just behind some of the barrels, out of the sun! I only lost a whole lot about 4 summers ago during that crazy March where it was definitely Spring/Summer temps and then it went back to normal after 3 weeks, and then, only a couple in barrels and the rest all in the pots you get them in from the nursery!

I lost five hosta, winter before last to voles. So, now all pots have a layer of gravel in the bottoms, and I've even dug out some of my older barrels and lined them with gravel--the sharp granite type--not pea gravel.

This year with all new plantings, I'm adding that same gravel mixed into the shredded pine bark for extra. I'm using the approx. 1+" size!

I've got LOTS in big pots (some semi-planted/some not) and barrels!

Oh, almost forgot--the hosta you asked about is 'Old Glory'! I really like that one! Right now the grassy green margins are not showing up so much but they will! I think the leaves might be larger if it were planted inground, but I like it the way it is!

LOL, nutmeg--I'm far from having so many hosta--less than 200 different specimens, but don't tell hubby I have even that many! He tells everyone I have 100's!
He's become one who certainly can appreciate a maturing hosta for sure! He's not quite the 'hosta whacko,' (as he likes to call us) yet, but he does
enjoy them in our landscape, finally! He'll even go with me to pick them out at our local nursery!

The one I'm liking this year is 'Key Lime Pie', an oldie, but goodie. The pics in the Hosta Library don't do it justice.
