Hummingbird Garden

I moved to Stafford, Va from NY 2 1/2 years ago. The one thing that has helped me adjust to the slower pace of life are the hummingbirds that I have been feeding for 2 summers, they are very soothing and relaxing to watch.

This year I have seen 1, 1 time, thats it. My feeder is in the same place and I keep fresh food in there for them. I dont know why they are not coming. The one thing i noticed was allot of regular bird droppings on the feeder. There are 2 Blue Jays, mail and a female that like to perch on top of the hanger, would this be keeping the hummers away?

Maybe. But I don't have bluejays and my hummingbird sightings are few and far between. I am outside constantly and have one quick sighting per weekend so far. Not only is my feeder full, but I have a complete smorgasbord of hummingbird plants in bloom. I'm trying to blame this on the cold east coast weather.

Turns out that I am being impatient. I have seen 2 today, but they are both little guys.

Believe it or not, my husband was camping out in College Fjord outside of Whittier, Alaska, earlier this week. There was snow all over, basically no food coming up for the bears yet, ice dangerously thick in the fjord still...but he saw 2 hummingbirds. I don't know what they'll find to eat right now.

All year long??? How wonderful! I've had two fighting over the feeders for a couple of weeks. I assume two males but maybe not. They light frequently so we can see that beautiful green and red. I've seen pictures from VanCleave MS with hummers lined up on the feeders and the man had one on his finger. I remember reading about the time he spent preparing sugar water and cleaning and refilling feeders. Hungry little suckers (teehee) aren't they? My neighbor has had to rescue hummers a couple of times after they ran their bills into her screened porch and stuck! We've seen their mating ritual (again assuming). My grandchildren say "They're ballerina-ering" new word invented by smallest child. We love having them.

Put my feeder out last week. Had hummingbirds the same day. By today, it seems to be a parade at times. The feeder hangs in a dogwood tree. I tied a red ribbon to the feeder too as I did last year. Use 2c. sugar to 1c. water. What do others make? I sometimes have one female sitting in the tree and watch as a male comes and they must be doing a mating ritual. At other times, I have one hummingbird on the feeder and another will come by waiting.

Posts at the bird watching forum at Hot Spot Outdoors mention both hummers and orioles showing up at various place around Minnesota already. Jam and oranges for the orioles and the sugar water for the hummers and some patience for them to find you. My mother in NW Iowa is seeing the orioles; she gets two types (Balitmore and Orchard), and always she has goldfinches.

I'm impatient too! Last year my first hummer was here on May 9th, and shortly the girls showed up. I've been checking daily, which IS a bad thing. Finally today, my first male, and only caught him by accident, just a quick glance. I scared him away (why are those guys so timid?), so I grabbed the feeder, cleaned it, & refilled it. He came back 10 minutes later. He's probably the smallest male I've ever seen, but oh so beautiful ;)
