Went out to buy some ferns but wound up getting this girl.I am expecting my order in a couple of weeks from Holland but gave in and bought something big now.

It's from a store called Hornbachs,I swear it is Home depot as it has a similar layout and everything is orange.

I know that people have mixed feelings about her but I hope she does well.They had another biggie,Blue Angel but I already have one coming.

Some were mislabeled even to my newbie eyes.One that said Blue angel looked to me like the drinking gourd one.Forget the proper name.

They also had some just marked ''Hosta'' which looked like Halcyn to my untrained eye.

The ones I am getting from Holland are guaranteed virus free so I will try to remember to use different tools if I do anything to her.

You need a photo hosting site like Photobucket or Flickr. You place your photos on there then copy the html code into the message box. It's a great way to show the plants in your garden.

As for FW, it's a beautiful Hosta. The thing that people don't like about it is the tendency towards spring dessication. This is drying out from Spring windy conditions and probably from lack of shade since trees haven't leafed out yet. Try to place FW in a sheltered spot away from the wind and you may have better luck.

It's blooming at the right time, with the correct color bloom. The edges do appear to be a little bit crispy, like a FW does. It also seems to have the same texture/corrugation. I'd say it's a good chance it is a FW. Looks to be doing really well for you! :)

Hi, Brandy! I am thinking the same as Don! Here's why. In spring of 2011 I purchased a Hydon Sunset and Dream Queen at Walmart. Then in spring of 2012 I picked up a Fire and Ice. Dream Queen died in a pot over winter so I can't attribute its loss to a virus per se. However, both HS and Fire and Ice are doing exceptionally well, so far. They were both been planted in the ground when I first bought them, (I was unaware of HVX until late 2011) then potted last fall. They will remain in pots until next year. If they are still clean, I will replant them. We DO take risks by buying from big box stores, but if we are diligent in our care, we should be able to enjoy these hostas just as much as if we paid upwards of $20 per hosta from a reputable grower/nursery. I have expensive and inexpensive hostas all growing equally well in my garden - they don't know the difference. They grow well, are happy and disease free to date. I have 5-yr old Junes and Golden Tiaras and Sum and Substance that came from a grocery store. They are stunning and healthy to this day. They were planted long before I knew about the virus. I've moved them around, divided them, and they are fine. Maybe I've been lucky. This year Walmart had ADG and DQ. I got 3 DQ's and a BA that should have been an ADG. So I went to my grocery store and picked up a real ADG. All look great so far. I'm watchful. You probably are familiar with the saying, Brandy....forewarned is forearmed. You can buy if you choose as you are aware of the risks. Still, all in all, Don couldn't have said it better though. :-)

Nope, ya gotta do two coats. Especially exterior. I'm a fan of SW Duration as much as anyone else, but I've never seen one coat look good. That second coat is what turns the corner for color resolution and everything else visual. Can't really speak to how one coat wears because 1. in general, it hasn't been that long that Duration has been on the exteriors I've been involved with and 2. I don't work with any painters who will do one coat on exterior, they won't even quote it that way. It's two coats or they don't want the job. Once you have everything set up and prepped, the painting is the easier part and the second coat always goes smoother, faster than the first -- so what the heck, just get that second coat on there while you're at it. It'll be done right and will protect your house and look great for years to come. I do know that Duration over pre-primed Hardie comes out looking reaaaallllly nice. Hardie & Duration is a nice pairing. Good luck with whatever you decide.

@groundbeef1 this is terrific advice, thanks for sharing: "It's been my experience (both sides of the register) that if the color can't be accurately represented in the smallest size, the next largest size is suggested (quart or gallon) if the client (or customer) needs the 'exact' color." I usually just spring for a quart in the brand, grade and sheen I ultimately want to use. Had pretty good luck doing that, but I know that's not even a 100% sure bet for every single color. @vith random color names like gray, beige and sage are purely subjective and essentially have no real meaning. One man's beige is another's tan, is sage the color of the actual herb or does that one word include all grayed-down greens, etc. I think the most interesting point the graphic makes is all the colors in each row are VERY close in terms of value and chroma. Value as indicated by the second number in the notation. Chroma as indicated by the last number in the notation i.e. hue/value/chroma. For conversation sake, we can combine the notions of value and chroma together and call it grayness. Despite the hue parent, each color in each row has about the same pitch of grayness. No one color is markedly less or more gray than the other. Unlike beige and sage, gray holds an important role in colorimetry and is defined as being neutral, achromatic - in other words colorless. When the word gray is used casually to describe a subjective interpretation of color, it's rendered equally as vague as the words beige and sage.

What a beautiful hosta you have there! I believe it would grow better for you in a larger pot containing well draining container medium. Also the larger pot will offer less chance of tipping over and be mobile to test it in the brightest area, shielded from the sun and wind.

btw, did you get some ferns too?

That is a nice looking hosta! I took a pic of a flat of hostas at Lowe's last month. All look about the same, but had several labels and several were labeled Francis Williams. Several that were identical (to my eyes) had different labels. Here's the pic, the two in the lower right and left corners, with the lavender labels, are supposedly FW.

I got saw a Halcyon at HD that looked exactly like a Seyboldiana Elegans thatI got somewhere else.

i have had good luck with my FW and as suggested by Steve, it is in a sheltered spot. This pic is from last June.

What a nice FW you have. No edge dessication. I had one once but the edges always got spotty/icky. So I got Olive Bailey Langdon and that works for me. We don't have freezes here, but just those cold winds in Spring that got my FW. Yours is special, and you should be proud. Hey, you are doing something right...perfect location.

First of all that is a nice looking Frances Williams! I've had many FW's in my garden for over ten years,and never had problems with them,but mine are in the shadier part of the garden. And,Babka beat me to it,but I was going to tell you about the spelling of Frances Williams,also! Phil

I love the hosta 'Frances Williams' for the leaf design, have several. I noticed that when planted into much sun they will come up early and get a little burn on the edges during frost. When planted shady they are just beautiful. I have also 2 OBL and those get burned by sun during summer more than FW. Another advantage of FW and OBL is that slugs have not much effect on them.

Thank you Babka, it is so nice to be back. Now that it is hosta season again, I love reading what people have to write and are as 'into it' as I am, there isn't anyone else that I know (that isn't on the computer) that 'gets' my excitement. lol
The Bridal Wreath Spirea is on its east side and the shed on its south side, so it gets the late afternoon sun but not all of it because there is a large maple tree about 30 feet to its west. Just lucky to have the soil and lighting that it seems to like, but it is definitely one of my favourites in my garden.
