Hummingbird Garden

Lots of hummers here in South Texas!

For about 3 weeks now, I've had a large number of RT hummers migrating through. I've got 6" feeders out and have been refilling them every other day. I also have a couple of BB hummers here too and a Northern Oriole feeding on the feeders. And I have lots of HB plants out from for them to feed on.

So get ready up north because they will soon be there!

Hi Linda

I had my first male show up early for me april 23rd. But since then its been pretty spotty action. For days I didnt see any then one or two. It will be nice to see more push northward.

Check out hummingbirds.net migration map. You may be putting your feeders out late. I loved the migration pattern from about 75 miles off the Gulf in MS, but I like the birds here in south AR also. Had 75 or more females stay for awhile before going south in MS. They don't seem to bunch up as much up here in AR, but I think I may have a few more stay all summer.

you are probably getting a wave of females migrating through. You are correct that adult males leave before the females by a few weeks, then the adult females and lastly the juveniles. I doubt that you would see Rubies coming from the south, the ones leaving Texas and Arizona would be either going south to Central American or perhaps east along the coast to LA, AL, or FL. The Panhandle of Florida does get birds that come across and then head south in Florida instead of going to Mexico.

Penny, The "local experts" to I refer to in my post include Nancy Newfield and Dave Patton, both hummer banders. Both say the same thing...nearly impossible to distinguish adult female Rufous or Allen's in the field...have to measure wings, tail, etc. Nancy wants to band this one if it sticks around, and it looks like it just might! That will be so neat! Yes, the plant it's feeding on is Firespike. Lots of hummer plants blooming right now...and this little baby has them all to herself :-) --Jane

hahaha! I had the camera sitting right here...both of 'em! Hubby left the one good one, the one that can zoom real good for me. But that little bugger was gone the instant I realized he was there. No time for pictures. Soon though.. I'll get a picture soon. Stuffed hummingbird...sure...Next Christmas I'm going to find me some hummer tree ornaments and just hang them all over my yard! I'll never be with out my hummers then!

Whoa! I'm ambling in a bit late on this swap. My horse pulled up lame and dab-nabbit, I couldn't make the round-up sooner. A litte Texas spirit from Bubbe here! (No, I'm not drinking yet). Well it seems that the spring migration is over down here in south Texas. So keep watching for them up north, specifically Indiana since that is where I'm from and will be next month. I want to see my Texas Hummers up there! LOL!
