Two Species at Once!!

I'm visiting my daughter in the Hill Country west of Austin, and all week, we've been watching Black-chinned hummers battle over her 3 feeders. This afternoon, while watching the fights, I saw a flash of RED! It was the first Ruby-throated of the year!! For a Southern hummernut, this was a new experience - two species at once!! I watched them for about an hour, and the male RT consistently chased the BC's away. Maybe it was because he was the new kid in town, or it could be that the RT's reputation of being a thug is true. Either way, it was great!!

Welcome to the Texas hill country, ctnchpr. Im slightly south west of your daugter. I have had a mix of black chinned and ruby throated two years. We are on the far western range of RTs and far eastern range of BCs.

The RTs, both male and female do seem to dominate the feeders and they seem slightly larger than their black chinned cousins.

This spring I keep thinking I see an occasional visitor with a reddish brown color. So be on the look out for yet another species. It would be a huge thrill for me to see a Rufous here as well. I've never had one here. My camera batterys are charged and ready.

I saw somewhere here a photo of tiles that had been painted white. I went to HD and asked about products to do this, and I think this is the way I want to go. We will keep the tiles. In addition, we decided to get rid of the old vanity and replace it with a Mill's Pride white thermofoil base cabinet (60" - kitchen unit). The contractor has opened up the recess for the cabinet by a small amount and now thinks he can do the installation without damaging any tiles. I think, overall, this is the best solution. In the far upper right hand corner there are 3 symbols: a "dash," something that looks like a "square," and an "X." Click on the middle one, the "square." Then slide your cursor carefully over either "edge" on the left or right side of the window. If you do this slowly, you will see the cursor change to a double-headed arrow. When you see that, hold down the left mouse button and drag the edge to wherever you want to make the window smaller. When it is the size you want, let go of the mouse button. Does that work for you?

Thanks, Rob, for that big ol' Texas welcome!! I was hoping to see a Rufous also, but didn't. Maybe this Oct when I come down for ACL...
