If it's an EA plant, it's really wayetti. The two are often confused. In fact, when I write about my wayetti, I always call it "wayetti (aka kentiana)" because so few people call it wayetti. A beauty by whatever name you call it, though!

Very pretty plant. I think I need to hang my wayetii, it's lop-sided compared to yours that is almost round. Very pretty hoya, nice price too BTW.

I don't mind the suggestion, Jan! I sort of thought I was putting it in too big of a pot when I did it, but now I have fungus gnats and don't want to repot it again to something smaller. I treated everything with a drench twice now, and am waiting to see how things go. I sort of thought that it would be too traumatic to repot again now, with the fungus gnats and all. What do you think?

You are right, you might as well wait until FG is gone and when the plant is more stable.
Peat based soil is prone to fungus gnat so I try not to use peat but I still have some left in my bag so I might dump it in my garden. I've been using mix of coco chunks, lava rocks/or orchid bark, perlite and coir.

Well, I repotted this time in potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite. I'll bet the potting soil is the culprit.

Denise...perhaps I'm wrong, admit I'm nowhere in you and others here 'hoya' league, but it seems to me, the differece between h. kentiana and h. wayetti is, Wayetti has much darker/deeper color edges, whereas kentianas don't. I have a Wayetti, (I think it was you who ID'd it) plus when Googling hoyas I came across both Way and Ken..there is a difference that can be detected according to pictures.

Mrs Doodle, I've done many experiments, using organics) ridding plant insects including fungus gnats..Played with sizes of pot, type of soil, low humidy and continuous wet soil too..
Many ppl now use soil-less mixes..Most can get away overwatering even if plant is overpotted, but I don't recommend it. But I'm old-fashioned, use real and soil-less mixes, so proper watering is important.
When using real soil it MUST dry between waterings. Dry air and wet soil attracts gnats, so it's best to wait before watering, make sure soil is dry before giving another drink and increase humidity..humidifers work best in winter..I'm also into daily misting, and showers (in the sink) When showering, I aim for foliage, not soil.
If it's an ornamental pot you like, especieially if the outer pot hasnt drainage holes, instead of potting directly in the pot, plant in a smaller plastic or clay container, set something, (styrafoam sheet, etc) on top of the outer pot..then set the smaller pot w/Hoya on top of styrofoam sheet. Start misting once heat's turned on. Remove felled leaves/ debris atop soil or inside pot. Gnats will hit the road..Good luck, Toni

In my opinion, there's no point in deciding whether or not you have kentiana or wayetti until it blooms. Leaf appearance and edging/color can be quite variable depending on growing conditions. I've seen pictures of leaves that are all over the place, from deep green/some edging, to green/no edging, to pale yellow/deep burgundy edging, etc, and it's difficult to keep track of who is saying which is which. I think the blooms look extremely similar as well, but there are actual differences that can be detected. There was a post on here a while back illustrating the differences between them, let me link it here.

This one I got from EA...label said Kentiana when I bought it. Some have said it is most likely Wayetti.

Here's the pics of the leaves and bloom, the leaves has the dark edges. You guys decide...what do you think?

Now that looks very different from my plant. The leaves look thicker and shorter, and they have red edges. How long did you have it before it bloomed? Those are gorgeous blooms!

I bought this plant end of April 08 and it bloomed for the first time Oct. 08. So it took about 6 months after I've had it. I keep this one outside under some FL Oaks 360+ days a year. It gets some dappled sun in the morning, could be why the edges are dark? I bring it inside only during very cold weather or Storms. I don't have room inside for the bigger hoyas :o(

I'm sure your will bloom soon...just give it regular "weak" fertilizers during the growing season. Enjoy your new hoya.

Based on the pics in the post I linked, my guess would be that yours is wayetti, Puglvr. It's a little hard to see, but the bloom stems look like they're green rather than red/brown, and the blooms have yellow dots, which are visible on the wayetti bloom pics, but not on the kentiana bloom pics. It looks like a very happy plant. I can't wait until my plant blooms, maybe I can see then if it is wayetti or kentiana. I received it as kentiana (not an EA plant), and mine does look different from yours. Mine has really long leaves, which are also pointier than yours, and while mine has dark margins, the leaf color is different. This guy lives in a south facing window, only about a inch or so away from the glass, with a sheer mesh curtain in the window. I'll post a pic of it again for comparison's sake.

Your hoya is lovely...very healthy! I am so confused(more than I normally am,lol). I took this picture this morning. You're right the bloom stem is green...but I have some leaves that are longer(maybe not as long as some of yours)but the newer growth has that same bronze color, just to add more to the confusion. I think yours will bloom soon, they seem to like a lot of bright light which you are providing. Keep us posted!

For anyone who is trying to ID one of these species leaf size, shape and colour (and flower colour for that matter) are not reliable ways to determine which of these Hoyas you have, you really need to see the flowers. The leaf form and colour are all too easily influenced by different growing conditions.
When your plant blooms sacrifice a flower and then compare it with the photo of the three blooms side by side. The photo is available on the Stemma Journal site as well. If you look at the corona you will notice that they are completely different in each flower. The outer tips of the corona (central star of a Hoya flower) also called the coronal scales is where you should look.

That's what I was trying to say, but I didn't have the terminology for it : ) I'm calling mine kentiana for the moment, since that's how it was labeled when I got it from GHW, but until it blooms, who knows what I have for sure?
