I've seen this map. What I don't know is if some of the data points of first sightings are the same as the other hummingbird migration map. I think maybe some are the same, and some aren't.

Notice that there is an ominous absence of new sightings yesterday and today. In that late March warm spell they were moving rapidly forward, but now, wherever they are, they seem hunkered down, struggling to survive these cold temperatures.

I hope "my" birds, wherever they are, will make it through the bad weather and will arrive later in April or early May. I'm worried.

Lanny sends his data to Journey North and people who post to Lanny' Map may also post on Journey North. A lot of times the info can and does overlap. The same thing can go the other way especially where classrooms are involved in tracking the spring migration. They will post on Journey North but not necessarily on Lanny's map. So you end up juggling the data of the 2 sources to try and get a clear picture.

She's beautiful. She must have set up shop in a rose bush or hedge. There are lots of thorns on those branches. I have a pair visiting my feeders daily now but I have not been able to locate their nest. The past three years I have seen them nesting in the front yard dominant pine, but I can't see the exact spot from the ground and have not seen the female traveling to that tree at all. The male has taken up his tradtional territorial roost overlooking the feeder. That will last until I see more birds show up and then I will set additional feeders throughout the yard. Then the male usually travels alot trying to cover all feeders (unsuccessfully) rather than roosting over the snigle one I have out presently.

No Bluebirdman, it's not suspicious. Although I can understand why you'd feel that way. The first wave of birds isn't as large as later groups. I may see a bird in early/mid April but I don't see alot until May or June. Since the little guys seem to follow the same routes - people who have fed for years or who have plants which have fed the birds for years will probably see them first. They're tiny little birds - so they're easy to miss. I lived near the local campus for 10 years and NEVER saw a hummingbird. I moved SIX BLOCKS eight years ago and because two of my neighbors had been feeding them for years I enjoy hummers all summer long. Be patient, if you put out food or flowers - they'll eventually find them. Good luck!

Beautiful weather here this week. I know old man winter is still holding on but his reign will soon be over and spring will arrive. I will really start looking for my first hummingbird after the first week in March. I have feeders cleaned and ready.

I have 3 that over winter. Anna's that is, 2 males and a female. 1 male and the female, Aka The Mr and Mrs have been with me for probably 5 years. I believe the other male is a son. This was his second winter. I bring the feeder in at night and bring back out at dawn or so when we had freezing temps. I have one male Rufous that should be showing up any time now. He takes his turn..I will put out another feeder for them to guard against each other in June. When they really get defensive of the space they normally share in harmony.
