How do you display your japanese maples

I have started to collect a few japanese maples that are young starter plants, 24 inches or less. I "think" I will plant them pot and all into the ground in and about my large species and oriental themed bed. I then plan to overwinter them in an unheated barn for the winter. I live in zone 6 and we get below zero intermittently, usually after the 60 degree week before.

How do you display your hostas and Jap. maples together?

JMs hardy to your zone are tough! I have purchased several Japanese maples tiny and inexpensive and planted them directly in the ground. I even *transplanted* one small JM after having it in the ground for 2 years! I think Japanese maples and hosta compliment one another beautifully. One of my JMs, now @ 4 ft tall but barely taller than some of my hostas when I planted it, is near the back of a hosta bed located in front of a pergola area. Another is at one end of a koi pond with a bed of mini hosta underneath it.

Yep - put them directly in the ground unless you are planning to move them. Mine come back strong every year - even the little cheap ones!

Don't do anything until fall. You may continue to be surprised. Wait and see to what extent it recovers. Before the deciduous leaf drop, you will know what is alive. You could gently cut into the cambian bark layer also to look for green. Then prune back all the dead growth. You will need to train a new central leader to get back your height from one of the most vertical new branches. It can take years to reconstruct a lace leaf JM since they are relatively slow growers. I would feed it lightly to help. the recovery with an acid fertilizer unless you native soil is acid already.

PM2, problem with HD is that individual stores don't know what they'll receive untill truck will be there. Even when they got their shipment invoice will say something like 'Assorted japanese Maples' and someone has to go out and physically check what tags on a plants says. Which is not going to happen, as you may guess :-) In my neck of the woods the following cultivars are pretty much common parts of the mix: 'Inaba Shidare', 'Tamukeyama', 'Red Select', 'Viridis', 'Butterfly' and 'Sango Kaku'. However, when grower for whatever reason can't fullfill order's quantity with 'common' plants it will throw in something from his 'premium' stock...but to get them you should be lucky to be the one of the first who sees them...and know what you are looking at :-) That's is how I got my 'Koto Hime' and 'Oridono Nishiki' (which at first glance looks like a 'Butterfly' reverting to original green form).

I have mine in an old French glass door cabinet. I still have to stain a couple of shelves so you will see that some are light in the cabinet, but the display works. Eventually this will all go in the butlers pantry but for now it's handy to have in the parlor next to the dining room. In our house guests get to pick their wine or drink glasses. Everyone has a lot of fun with this. I have several patterns of depression glass, crystal, fancy glass and even glass ware from the 50's and 60's, rarely more than six pieces of each type. I display them on shelves based on their use (champagne, cordials, wine, water, high/low ball and beer) and try to keep the pieces together on the shelf. I will take a couple of pics for you tonight but it's kind of dark in there so if they aren't great I'll come back and do more tomorrow for you if you want.

how do you display your kids' trophies?

This was discussed over in the organizing forum. Before you figure out where to display them, you first have to figure out if they are meaningful to him or if you are the one who wants to display them. Some kids like trophies and if he does, then by all means figure out a display option. Creating a shelf that runs around the perimeter of the room at the same height as the top of the window can be a tremendous amount of display space w/out compromising the play space in his room. If they aren't meaningful to your child than get rid of them. You can donate them to youth programs to be reused if you can't stomach tossing them. My older child received a participation trophy for every baseball, soccer, football, and lacrosse season. Participation trophies are meaningless to him. We neither keep nor display them. He received a couple of golds for karate tournaments. These he kept because they were earned. Medals received for top finishes in cross country races are kept as are trophies received when his travel lax team wins a tournament. There may come a time when these, too, will hold no meaning for him and then it will be time to purge them.

I have nine...( 4 are Jap. maple seedlings) are mostly 15 feet tall. That happens in Northern Calfornia. I have a "crispus" in a container that is about 3 feet tall, and a Crimson Queen that is 8 or 9 feet tall and as wide. The last time I was at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, there was a booth that offered 300 different kinds of Jap. maples. Their roots are every bit as invasive as regular maples. The only thing I have been able to grow under them is dwarf mondo grass, which has long, deep roots. But then I'm way out here on the Left coast, and my situation doesn't apply to anyone east of the Missippi.

As you can see, I'm in even a colder zone...I have had a Japanese Maple planted directly in the ground for 5 years, it has always come back like a charm. Very slow grower, but I don't mind because it's just off my front stoop...someday, perhaps it will shade the stoop gracefully, but I'm in no hurry. I do have hostas growing in its territory, but then, my whole front yard is maple tree territory, as I have 4 HUGE maples across my property. Unknowingly, I planted a hosta garden all the way across the front of the house, right under and just off the maple dripline. The hostas directly at the dripline did diminish on about the 5th year, as did some lilies. However, the ones 8 feet from the dripline are doing just fine. I'm not moving the garden or changing it. I just keep putting young ones in there and watering. When I have my garden plant sales (to pay for this habit), I pull the med sized hostas right out of that bed for the folks. It works pretty well, actually. I guess you could just call it my nursery! And a pretty one, at that!

Babka, thank you for the warning about roots.

I have two that we think are 'Bloodgood' (dark red) that are in the ground, but no hostas with those two, except for a Ventricosa about 4' from the one on my west wall.

I do have a few more either in the ground or in pots in my hosta areas, and I'll be watching them more closely than I would have without your warning:

Watnong (small pot)
Waterfall (big pot, small plant)
Butterfly (in the ground near small hostas)
and two green ones I have no name for.
