Gabi I do have Hoya pentaphlebia on my list of new Hoyas I would like to grow but I always seem to skip over it for something else. I have seen some really stunning photos of pentaphlebia on the web but it seems that there are some rather boring forms of this species as well. Does your Hoya pentaphlebia have much colour to the leaves or is it strictly green? I would love the form that has reddish/coppery coloured leaves.
I decided to order a few more new ones before the end of the summer and included Hoya clemensiorum and Hoya loyceanderwsiana for their large leaves.

Well, I'm not sure that mine has reddish leaves. I got it from the hawaiian grower, and there has been no new leaf growth yet (it's rather new). The old leaves are green...I'm assuming the new leaves are reddish? Or does it have to do with sunlight?

I thought I had H. loyceandrewsiana, but I was recently told that it was actually latifolia - the true latifolia sold by DL. The leaves are huge and perfectly round. I'll post a picture if you'd like. I also have what I thought was aff. latifolia (acquired through a recent trade here on GW), but was told it wasn't. It kind of looks like pentaphlebia - so I might have 2 of them! I guess only blooms will tell.

Oh, glabra is another that you might like, if you don't already have it. I would love to see pics of the 2 hoyas you are planning on getting after you get them.

Yes, I saw Christina's picture before and it's STUNNING! I think that's what made me get that hoya.

The one that the hawaiian grower sold to me is from DL #391. She only has one pentaphlebia on her list and it is the one you are referring to. Also, I know mine is the one with yellow flowers - that's why I bought it...I'm a sucker for yellow blooms.

I wonder why my leaves aren't red. You really don't think it has anything to do with sunlight? I know Christina gets red leaves on pretty much every single hoya she grows that has that capability (to get red in bright sun), so I wonder.

I have Hoya clemensiorum, got this from Carol. Mine has just a few leaves but they are really long/wide, not paper thin but very stiff! I do have a vine on this one (it came with it) just waiting for leaves to pop out.

I also have Hoya loyceanderwsiana absolutely the biggest round, raised veined, succulent leaves I have ever seen. Those leaves are so heavy. Got it off ebay along with H. Subquintuplinervous. When this hoya gets big I don't know if I will be able to find a catch pot heavy enough for it, probably have to buy one of those really large heavy concrete pots.

H. Subquintuplinervous - This pic doesn't show the new growth, I think there are 2 new leaves.

I think I need hoya pentaphlebia and glabra now, where does it end? OH, that's right it doesn't!!!

Thanks so much for your pictures. Where did you have your imbricata that you sunburned the leaves? I mean location, indoors, what light. Outdoors? I have a square 10 gallon fish tank that I was going to put it in but I guess I will just wait until I get it tomorrow and see how big it is and go get a cylinder glass think like what you have. Do you put anything over the top of the glass, like to enclose it?

I had the imbricata outside in dappled sun but I guess it was a little to much. At first I thought I had for sure killed it. I put inside on the dinning room table and that is were it has started to grow two more leaves.
I do put a zip lock baggie on top at night(I know not pretty). At first I did have plastic warp on the top all the time but my stick started to grow mold.
Shanna be for I for get my dinning room faces south but i have a over hang so no direct sun.

Looking at the pentaphlebia pictures on the web, I guess mine is the plain green one. It gets moring sun and the leaves do not turn red. The leaves are similar to citrin that I have, except the citrina leaves are much larger. They get a little red in the sun. Here is a picture of both side by side, citrina on the right.

Gorgeous leaves. I see what you mean about the awkward way that the loyceandrewsiana cutting is! What if you turned the stem the other way and buried the stem on an angle? Thanks for sharing your pics.

I looked at loyceandrewsiana last night and there is a small green thing at the node, not sure if it will be a vine or a leaf but it is a green nub. How exciting!! I definately will post pictures when it starts growning. That cutting has done so well, not picky in the least.

Ima digger is your Hoya citrina the one with the huge leaves?. Both very nice Hoyas but the the large leafed plant is definitely my favorite.

Denise, where did you get your (non variegated) macrophylla? Sorry if you've already said.

Mike, my citrina is the one with the very large leaves. It was a cutting from Ted Green this past December. For a cutting just 9 months old, it is growing very fast. The leaves turn red when I have it in sun, but we had so much rain in August that I moved it under the lanai roof. It only gets morning sun now. I love the large leaves. I read somewhere that it is also called pentaphlebia, buy my pentaphlebia has smaller leaves and doesn't turn red in the sun. I guess I have to wait for flowers on the citrina to see if they are different. Time will tell.

My 2 fav's I got this past Spring would have to be engleriana and microphylla. Both are the mini's of the Hoya family. This is my 4th try with these 2 through the 10 yrs. I've been growing Hoya's. (so much for the saying third times a charm,,lol).
This time I tried something different and placed the rooted cuts in soil mix in a terrarium in a north window. I usually grow all my plants in east and west windows but a friend told me she grows these 2 in a north window. Heck after my kill rate it was worth a try with these. lol. So far so good and none have died! (knock on wood!),,,,Debbie

Hope your north window does you some good. I have 3 hoyas in a north window, lacunosa -wasn't room in my east and southern windows. My new rooting sigallatis (Sp) and a huge hanging thanksgiving cactus. I got my sigallatis from Carol and she said that it likes cooler weather and not as much humidity as other hoyas. I did have a little mis-hap, I had opened the window and the strong wind blew the potted cuttings on the floor. I cleaned up the dirt mess and repotted the cuttings, so I hope they make it through the trama.

OK Shanna I have got everything potted up and I put my favorites from the group together for some photos. My Hoya polystachya has tons of roots and new growth starting, the old fish tank plus bottom heat really speeds things up!

The Hoya polystachya is in a 4" pot and the others are in 3" pots. The other two are Hoya loheri wih the small leaves and Hoya micrantha in the black pot.

The Hoya loyceandrewsiana has fairly small leaves but hopefully they grow nice and big when the plant matures a little. The other two are Hoya clemensiorum and Hoya erythrina.

The Hoya meredithii cutting I got this summer grew very fast and is flowering for the first time today. When I repotted the cutting from it's small pot and trellised it the tips of the vines died back but new leaves continue to develop along with a peduncle. The new leaves are much darker than the older ones so I might have to give this plant more light to get better contrast on the leaf. The flowers are quite small and the entire bunch is only 1.5" across. I got this cutting labeled as Hoya meredithii small leaf GPS 3576 20033. This has been my fastest growing and blooming Hoya so far and I would definitely recommend it.

Thanks for the compliments ladies. :) I have to admit that I have was pleasantly surprised by this plants performance. The blooms have a fresh scent that reminds me of soap but it is faint.

Kelly the photos were taken in natural light. It was overcast today so I slightly overexposed the shots. There are several different varieties of Hoya erythrina that I have seen offered by growers. When a species has a wide distribution it is pretty much inevitable that it will show variations. From what I have read Hoya erythrina is from Malaysia but that can mean anywhere from the mainland Malaysian peninsula to part of the huge island of Borneo which is also considered part of Malaysia. Asiatica has a really beautiful Hoya erythrina with red leaves available and I have seen a few different green leafed varieties offered.

Sorry I've taken so long to get back to this thread - just saw your question about macrophylla. The plain green form does seem hard to come by anymore. I actually got mine about 7 years ago as a rooted cutting at my C&S club's show/sale. At the time, it was the most I'd ever spent on a plant - $18.00 if I remember correctly. Glad I did, though!

Hmm, Mike that meredithii looks nice... I might have to purchase it off Paul one of these days, if I can find a spot to squeeze it in!
Most recently acquired... hmm, you know, although it wasn't that recent any more, it still has to be my praetorii. And, I think it's about to bloom! More recently I bought deykeii (sp) from Paul Shirley... I love the heart-shaped and veined leaves, it's the one at the top of this photo.

Hills I was toying with the idea of getting Hoya deykeii from Mr. Shirley but could not make up my mind. Well my mind is made up now, what a beautiful leaf. It's like fancy little Hoya kerrii without the dripping nectar.

I just got cuttings of callistophylla, darwanii, mindorensis aff and dischidia vadilii from Antone - the guy who had the OUTSTANDING plant of mindorensis aff (orange and pink flowers)on ebay recently!

The cuttings are beautiful! I'll try to post pictures this evening! I'm amazed at how delicate the darwanii leaves are! And I may now be hooked on dischidia as well as hoyas....

I just got my last Hoya order of the year seeing as it will be too cold to ship soon and I have run out of space for cuttings in my propagation tank. I though I would post a photo of the newest group because I was finally able to get a cutting of Hoya sigillatis. The leaves of Hoya sigillatis are just beautiful and I can hardly wait to see the flowers on this one. The others are Hoya davidcummingii in the black pot and Hoya sp. Sabah 4943, all came from Paul Shirley. Hoya sp. Sabah has three fairly prominent veins on leaves that are 6" long and 1.25" wide.

Kelly I am still undecided weather my Hoya meredithii small leaf GPS 3576 20033 is correctly labeled. The leaves and flowers on our plants look quite similar so perhaps my plant is another variety of Hoya callistophylla?

Hoya sigillatis is such a neat plant! Not the fastest grower for me, but mine appears to be doing something right now!

I've been thinking about this for a while and I'd have to say my favorite out of my recant new ones would have to be
calycina, I just love it's velvet like leaves.
I also have magnifica and fungi which have soft undersides.
magnifica I got from the spring DL order and it's done very well this summer.
I have all of these setting in the window by my computer so I can pet them regurally. (How weird is that!)

Jo that's funny that you mentioned Hoya calycina because I have been trying to track down a source for that species for a while. I don't have much interest in Hoya australis it's self but Hoya calycina is definitely on my wish list. I guess the question is do I have room for such a large fast growing Hoya? Do you find this plant easy to keep contained on a support?

I don't have much room either, and calycina does grow very fast for me...but I don't have any problem keeping it on a support. You'll just need a BIG one :)

I just got my calycina this summer and I just love the leaves, for me it's one of those that I don't really mind if it never blooms I'll keep it for the foliage.
So far mine is doing really good for me.

You could always keep it trimmed if you didn't want it getting to large.

I also got this imperalis cutting in a trade and I really really like it, it seems like a fast rooter/grower, got it a couple months ago at the most. I have another imperalis from the hawaii grower and it hasn't done a thing and got it as a small plant, got it in the spring. I have both in southern light.
