I know where to get some good pot

I grow in pots and have most of my life. In another post I heard where Miss Mocc was like me drilling holes in pots from local sources. This gets old fast. Lowe's has commercial pots no bottom drain just side. I think I may have found a source for some quality pots and it was right here under our noses. Greenhouse Megastore has a great selection of pots for all occasions. This is a 2gal Terra cotta with 6 side vents and 6 bottom holes not flat to the pot but in a recessed area. I am tickled orange and they make colors pop on the plants in them.

Now I want the Senior Teacher Greenhouse. lol

I was eying those pots a week ago and was thinking of ordering some for my hostas, but then ended up getting some for free. I wondered how sturdy they were. Is the plastic on the thick or thin side with those pots?

Good sturdy quality comparable to high grade black commercial, I am going to get many years out of these. Also easy slide out when eventually repoting. Paula

Not that these are "good", but, you may have some pups off my Neoregelia Ampullacea (at least I think that's what it is!) for free (plus postage)! I live in Northern California. Just email me privately and we can figure out a way to get to them to you! Here's a really ugly shot of them. The pups are much prettier and color up more in the sun. I grow them indoors and out. They grow taller and greener inside and shorter and purplier (:-)) outside. I'd be glad to hand some off to someone! I'm sure they'd ship easily and they are so hardy. I've had this clump since 1981 or 1982 when I used to volunteer at the botanical gardens in Berkeley. They gave me one little pup and this thing has lived with little or no care for these past 23 years, growing and multiplying. I have about 15 of them (pups) sitting in a bowl of water, just as happy as can be. A few of them bloomed recently...nice little purple flowers mostly hidden in the cup. I fell in love with this bromeliad instantly when I was young. I had this fascination with growing it with water in the cup :-) I also have a thing for plants that are easily propagated and respond so positively to care. Hi Rob, Not much to add ... and hope that you're back at least part way out of your blue funk. Brother, retired farmer who lives 1600 miles way, has one son, only child, in a city 100 miles from here, a couple of small grand-daughters from son's second marriage, and comes to visit them a couple of times a year. He'd called to say he was to be in the neighbourhood, and we got together on Friday, I called son and he and his partner were there for lunch, as was brother and wife ... and a couple of favourite cousins were, as well. Brother spent a few years when he was very young with the family of our Mom's brother and their two children when she was ill, so he considers one as almost a sister: the son, a local farmer, died several years ago. The other cousin lives locally and I see her at church fairly often - she, who had voice training, has sung in the choir for 75 years. The brother and I went to deal with some complications over inheritance of cemetery plots that Dad owned ... and it looks as though resolution is to be easier than we figured. Then we sat and had a chat ... and he's rather worried about future viability of his son's marriage. We don't see one another often, but we've been close, over the years. Our brother died over forty years ago, when his kids were in their teens, and our ready-made sister that came with our stepmom lives near brother in Saskatchewan. Anyone know where to get some reproduction hardware?

A little cost and effort, but you can make your own copy if it's important enough to you. There are a couple companies (here's one) that will sell you supplies to make a mold from an existing piece to re-cast a near-perfect reproduction. It's actually a lot of fun to do. You can make molds for true metal castings, but the urethane resin they sell is pretty tough stuff (probably stronger than the pot metal in the original), I'd be tempted to make it in urethane, with or without metal powder, and then put the repro pull in a location where it doesn't get used much. Once you have the mold making lots of copies is easy.

Apricots would grow well in that area. Also almonds. Mulberry may be a possibility, but I'd do some research first to make sure you get a good tasting variety. (Black is usually tastier than red or white) A fig tree would be a good idea. (But be aware the trees can get messy with all the fruit dropping and rotting on the ground if you don't pick them) A walnut tree, but don't plant it close to anything else because walnut trees release a substance into the soil to make it difficult for other plants to grow nearby. (Be aware the downside is that a large walnut tree can attract loud flocks of crows) There are many other fruits that you could grow but these are the ones that will grow well where you live.

Good to know. I may have to get some in the future when the plants outgrow the pots they are in now. That's if I don't lose them this winter.

Still peeved over my losses.

All those folks who google 'pot' and stumble in here may find a new hobby lol. They'll all want to meet leafwatcher.

Curious - why do pots with holes on the sides drain better? And is 'best' a pot with holes in both bottom and sides?

A pot that sits flat on a surface will drain slower as time goes on as the drain holes do fill in. Media settles and worms help me out too traveling in and out. I need fast drainage here as I get heavy rain storms. With both bottom and side holes I have my plants covered. Something like one entry many escape routes. Bottom is an extra. Mert mentioned it last year about side drainage and she is right. For my hosta I am definitely getting side drainage.They do not clog. Just a good tip.

If you raise them up on a couple sticks they will drain better. Wood decks won't stay wet either that way. Get air under that pot for better drainage, bottom or sides. The only advantage to side drains (for me) is that I can stick my finger in there to determine if the plant, although dry on the top inch or so around the crown, isn't still very wet at the bottom of the pot. Lotsa moisture sits at the bottom even on those side hole pots. Once you know what to look/feel for you will be able to figure out how often to water. I have killed many more plants with too much water, than not enough.
