What makes Zillis' book worth sixty dollars more than Grenfell & Shadrack's "Pocket Guide to Hostas"?

With the Hosta Library and Registrations on line, why would anyone need a picture book?
I didn't purchase the first one for $20, certainly can find something more worthy for $75. Some more Hostas, for instance!

The name of the new book is "The Hosta Encyclopedia" and it's destined to become "the reference for hostas" for years to come. Zilis is presenting the book first at Ruh's because of all the photos he's taken there, and at Wade & Gatton's. Don

The prices of everything are going up, why not the Zilis book? I paid half that much for his first book a few years ago and find it to be a constant companion when hosta shopping or when I need hosta information.

Does anyone know how many pages, how large?

The wait will soon be over and we'll all either hate it or love it.

I told a friend who owns a hosta nursery that the book was due out in June, and she called Mark this week to check out the latest on the book. According to Mark, it is not going to be out until August (he thinks), it runs around 1000 pages, and will probably be priced in the $75 range. If it is as good as he promises, at 1000 pages, and with lots of color photos, it will probably be worth the price. That's the lastest as of May 12.

Perhaps it is being released for regular sale to most venues in August, and at the nursery in June? Ruhs seemed sure that there would be a book signing, and if I can't make it, they would have one signed for me, and held for pick up.

The lecture is still scheduled. June 21 and 22, 11 am Saturday and 1 pm Sunday.
I was there on May 15, opening day. The book being available is not going to determine the event, as Ruh's have a lecturer every year.

I'm going to buy the new Zilis book as soon as it comes out! Any additional info and pictures I can acquire about hostas, I consider a gift. While some might consider it expensive, I look forward to its release. I wish more accomplished gardening people would take the innitiative to share their expertise in the form of books. I have other gardening interests, and I would feel lucky to have definative info in these areas and would welcome additional information, no matter what the price. But then again, they would probably get greif about how much they're charging for their efforts, which is probably why they don't do it. Just my two cents, Dan

I can tell most of you aren't librarians. $75.00 for a large format reference book (assuming that the new Zillas book matches this description) is not out of the ordinary. This is why you need to support your local library. Maybe you can get them to order a copy for their collection. I'm glad I bought a personal copy of his first book when I visited the Ruh's a few years ago, as there are now two used copies on Amazon- asking price around $200.00. On second thought, I'm sorry I didn't buy multiple copies when I had the chance! Cheers, Ron Jones

$75.00,it,s not so bad,consider how many years you will use it,all the great pictures to drool over during the cold winter months.I am sure it will be a great book,his first one was,and still is.

According to a post on Hallson's this book isn't going to be out until at least August.

Awww geez I thought it was coming out in June and was looking forward to having a new Hosta reference book soon........guess August isn't that far away though.
